Just getting caught up in this thread. I have nothing to offer other than how funny Vince is for lobbing this grenade of an article and then going on paternity leave till February. I wouldn't wanna have to walk in the locker room or pass by Drury the next day either, maybe by then they will have forgot!

It's not rocket science. If you treat your employees with respect, they'll probably work harder for you. A conversation with Goodrow in the middle of the summer to the effect of "we appreciate your time here, but we're in a tough spot. We're going to move on from you, we'll look for a trade that works for us and works for you, but if that doesn't work we'll put you on waivers" is so easy and not asking much.

So how do NTCs work? Do you submit your list at the beginning of your contract? Do you submit a new one at the start of each year? Or does it not enter into the equation until the team is trying to move the player? If it's the latter of the three, it makes sense a GM would talk to the player in advance. Better than hammering out some details with another team's GM only to find out your player won't waive.The expectation that GM's should inform players when they are actively being shopped is a recipe for disaster. What happens if a trade doesn't materialize in a timely fashion and GM's end up with player on their hands who is either depressed or disgruntled and their level of play suffers even more than what it already was like? Now you've got a player whose value is made even lower than what it already was - all because you informed them you were actively trying to trade and move on from them. This way of handling business could also result disrupting existing team chemistry and causing player/management issues once everyone knows that a certain player is actively being shopped. Not a wise strategy from GM's and this is why they do not inform every player they are thinking about trading or actively exploring trade options for.
NHL Players should fully understand that the ability to earn millions of dollars playing their favorite sport comes with trade-offs that include abruptly being informed that you've been traded and have to relocate yourself and family to another part of North America to continue earning millions of dollars playing their favorite sport. I don't feel bad for them for having to deal with this hardship when they are earning millions of dollars to play a sport they love.

He also makes reference to there being an "air of grievance" in the locker room and characterized the players as being like "mites" - implying they are being childlike/immature, and not conducting themselves like mature adults and professionals.

First time we lucked into bad goalies, and Crosby got injured. Second time we got the Caps, who weren't very good. Both times we got Carolina, who somehow we can beat. Both times we looked awful in the Conference Finals ... it appeared we were over our heads.This team went from Eastern confernce finals to everyone sucking....figure it out.
For so many years, we've been focused on this notion that there are no leaders worthy of being a captain amongst the players. We've also traded away our last 3 captains. We've fired 3 coaches in 5 years. We fired the GM and Team President. We have a GM who has apparently gotten rid of a lot of employees for various reasons in recent years.
It all strikes to me as an organization that's being run with too much micromanaging where people don't feel comfortable stepping forward and being leaders because then they are too micromanaged and undercut. I get the sense that it's not even Drury. But perhaps Drury's approach is much like Dolan's.
This is purely my speculation. So who knows. But the organization seems to be run out of fear not vision.
I am also a Dodgers fan (3rd generation), and just having that comparison in regards to how the two orgs are run are night and day. It's clear that the Dodgers org is comfortable with letting Andrew Friedman and the baseball people run the organization from top to bottom and implement a legit system with a philosophy that keeps producing talent year after year and allows them to be competitive which then puts them in a financial place to make big moves. It's a far far cry from the way the Rangers are run and it's becoming harder and harder to justify wasting time following this organization. The team needs to be sold. or Dolan needs to back away. And Drury needs to go. Success in the pro sports requires putting smart people in places where they have autonomy and longevity. Everything else is the cat chasing its tail.

Employees being reprimanded for interacting with players, those players being instructed they're not allowed to interact with fans "outside the designated areas" (whatever that means), reporters being told to keep certain things quiet that happens in practice...
