Do Avs still trade Rantanen if they know he ends up in Dallas?

Original trade had to be tough even with MR playing in the Eastern Conference. To have him end up (apparently long term) on a divisional rival is a real crotch punch.

With hindsight do the Avs just pay up for MR?

I think you could ask the opposite question as well - does Mikko sign with the Avs if he knows he ends up in Dallas. He probably would have imo.

Avs are a much more balanced team today than they were 2 months ago. They look ready to contend again. Not sure they could accomplish this without trading him. I’ll say yes, they do the trade. Dallas doesn’t scare the Avs.

The team that baffles me with their decisions in all of this is Carolina.

They are talking about Rantanen driving this negotiation

His agent Andy Scott finally sat him down and said dude I negotiated for Draisaitl, he’re the difference between 7-8.

You’re not getting that AAV going to UFA and 7 years
So stick with the $12 range in 8 years and call it day

Backfired on rantanen

They'd probably do a lot of things differently if they could see into the future like this, as would every other team.

I think it was the Erik Karlsson trade from Ottawa to San Jose that had conditions attached to it requiring the Sharks to pay an extra draft pick if they went on to trade him back into the east, which is no longer allowed. Don't quote me on the exact details of that, though.

I mean with no extension in place with teh trade, they had to know something like this was a possibility.

Obviously didn't envision him being traded again this season but as a free agent he could have signed anywhere including a rival

Dallas' and Colorado's rivalry just intensified even more. Im sure the Avs fans will boo Rantanen mercifully.
I would be shocked if he's booed (at least in his first return, he eventually might like every Stars player lol). He did quite a lot of good for the team (including winning a Stanley Cup), and Colorado traded him for a very good return.

That'll be interesting. On the one hand dude was instrumental in bringing us a cup.

On the other hand, he dicked around with us on a contract Extension all year just to sign with a big rival for basically the same money we offered him?

I would think most fans would care more about the first part over the 2nd part. But some fans for sure will probably boo him. I know I would.

I actually think even more so that the Avs players will take this more personally. Mack, Cale, Landy... I bet they make a point to finish every check as hard as they can on Mikko moving forward.

Seems really silly to me. He had a right to not sign a contract offer he wasn't happy with, and he was traded abruptly. He's also a Cup winner in Colorado. He's done nothing to merit being booed over.

I think it would be primarily because he is on Dallas now more so than anything else.

Dallas should and absolutely does scare the Avs. Dallas is their biggest obstacle to another Cup and Dallas just added one of the Avs’ best performers from that last Cup.

Dallas thinks they’re getting MacKinnon version of Rantanen, when in reality they’re getting the Aho version, possibly a worse version. Dallas’ best player might not be ready for playoffs and they may have just blew up their salary structure. He will help on the power play, for sure tho.
