Pretty expensive but makes sense if Severson is at 6.25mil and Gavrikov is at 5.9mil. Hes better than both guys. Going to depend on the term with him.

He’s also 32y.

Severson turns 29y& Gavrikov is 27y, there’s a big age difference

This would be immediately regretted by the new team. Decent top 4 defenseman but after a hot start in Boston was rather pedestrian and did not throw even throw one memorable hit in the playoffs. Boston will do well to move on. Became afraid to shoot the puck in the playoffs inexplicably.

I feel like I'm stuck at prices from like 3-4 years ago. When did Orlov become an $8M defenceman? That's legit #1D money for a guy who played second fiddle to Carlson for basically his whole career.

1D money starts at 10 today, especially for UFA years

Bit of a yikes from me given he'll be 32 to start next season. Thought he would get 6ish for 6-7 years but I guess between the Severson/Gavrikov deals and him being the best UFA D available he's swinging for the fences.

There are plenty of reasons why 8mil is not terribly over priced due to Seversen's contract and others.

But if he is also looking for a long-term contract like 6-7 years, that is where the problem begins because of his age. 8mil at 3 years or something could make sense, but the team that signs him has to realize that he will be untradeable due to the contract.

I could see it if it is a short contract, like 2-3 years.

I still think it is a bit much for him though, even on that short of a deal. I would say like 7-7.25 on a 2-3 year deal would be the most I would pay.

Seeing how much other teams fans are balking at his average gives me hope he can come home to Washington. He only traded him because he wanted to many years.

I think asking for $8m sounds about right from his camp. I think he settles for low $7m on a long term deal.

He was really really good for the Bruins but that's a bit steep. He should easily get something in the 6M range longterm and probably above 7 from a more desperate team.

But if he's asking for 8M, don't see Hanifin asking for less.

Severson is 28, Orlov is 32. I agree that Orlov is worth more, but if Orlov is looking for that big a payday, it’ll have to be for fewer years.
I imagine it’ll be 4-5 years - that’s the equivalent of a 7-8 year deal for your typical high end player hitting UFA for the first time. Understood that you aren’t getting 3 of the prime early years but the market for impact blueliners is barren this summer and Orlov is the type of defender GMs lust after - versatile two-way game and tons of high level playoff experience.

Anybody who thinks Orlov is signing for less than 4 years or less than something starting with ‘7’ is completely underestimating the market for a blueliner like this. It’ll look bad at the back end like every UFA deal (less so when the time actually comes though with a rising cap) but most GMs are trying to win now. Orlov is gonna be prince of the UFA ball this summer. No chance this turns into Klingberg - everybody knew Klingberg was pretty washed last summer when he was making his demands except Klingberg.

I think players ask are starting to line up with the projected salary cap after next season. They know it's going up, and we're gonna see a lot of high AAVs this offseason

I have always have had good things to say about Orlov not 8 mil worth though....more like 6-7 mil.
