I've never been a fan of the Boyle comparison if that actually a real comparison. Voronkov might have the potential to score as many goals in a season as Boyle had points. Boyle would have been a better matchup guy

In Carolina they have a history of not signing either UFAs or RFAs and then going into hardball mode in the summer.

That was usually attributed to the owner, not to Waddell, but so far we haven't seen him eager to sign anyone here either.

My assumption is the bridge deals are a franchise staple (maybe mandated by ownership? Who knows) so I wouldn’t expect voronkov’s deal to change that. 2-3 year deal, and if a bridge is what’s coming, there’s no rush to get it done.

Caps' Protas would have been a comparable if Wads signed Voronkov long term last summer. Both had 30 or so points last year. Protas was extended last January at $3.3m per over five years, in a month where he went scoreless.

This year both big men have been phenoms. Voronkov will get significantly more than Protas, perhaps double.

If Voronkov gets 6.6 I'll be totally shocked. First don't do anything till end of season. If he hits the 60's I'd consider a long term but would still prefer a bridge for 4ish. Let him prove him prove consistency then open the bank.

I’d love Voronkov at 5-5.5 x 5. I don’t know whether or not that could get done.

He can control the f*** out of the center ice. Neutral zone and around the net.

He’s never gonna beat a guy like Fantilli in a foot race, but, Voronkov is quick enough, and a VERY SMART player, great at anticipation in all aspects, where he really doesn’t get beat or puts himself out of position often.

My main point is I think he might actually be able to “conserve” energy by playing center and controlling the center of the ice, literally and figuratively.

I would like to see Voronkov at C, and Fantilli at W, together.

Maybe later in the season when everyone is back from being injured, but right now I would not touch the first line

If he signs a one or two year extension this year then sure, it might not be a ton of money. But long term we have to be realistic. If he's even so much as a 60 pt forward then teams will be throwing $8m+ at him. I'd rather get a long term deal sooner so we can lock him in at a lower number, and frankly this is a player I don't want to risk losing. There will be no replacement.

I think that might be enough - it's hard to say how much risk Voronkov and his agent are willing to take. But another hot month or two on the top line and I think that offer would come up short.

I liked Fantilli on Monahan's wing so much, I think it might still be a very good topline. But the premise of Voronkov at center is that he would have Marchenko or Chinakhov on his wing, which we can't do right now. Maybe he'd be a good 2C even without them, he's consistently crushed our expectations. Or perhaps Voronkov doesn't score much at 2C and that makes him easier to extend long term.

The team needs more than 1 line that’s consistently dangerous offensively.

If you want to keep Marchenko-Voronkov together, that’s fine. With the huge loss of Chinakhov, I’d look at some combo of KJ/Fantilli/Olivier to fill out the top 6.

Voronkov has been such a great surprise the last two years! I think he will not reach his full potential till we make the playoff, he plays hard but I want to see him be a little bit more of a prick with his size
