Some movement over at the well-known site passionhockey.com: They're working on an alphabetic register featuring profiles of every player who has ever taken part in the Olympics, World Championships, Canada Cup/World Cup and older European tournaments. So far only the first two letters (A and B) are online), but that alone covers hundreds of players. The profiles are in both English and French.
By now letters C and D have been added.
Some examples from there:
Josef Černý:
"Outstanding skater and stickhandler who seldom had a bad game. Idol of Václav Nedomanský. Changed his game from being a highly skilled forward to a hardworking checker."
Vitaly Davydov:
"Davydov was not physically imposing but was an excellent skater with fast outlet passes to his forwards.
Steady and reliable defenseman who made few mistakes. Did not have much of a shot but was strategically very intelligent."
Vladimír Dzurilla:
"Calm and collected goaltender who played the angles well. Surprisingly quick reflexes despite his size. Good at using his stick."
