A 50/60 point guy, 10-15 goals who is extremely physical I’d probably take Dion, shame his prime was his early career but it’s close and I could be convinced otherwise

I'm not sure McAvoy will ever manage a Double Dion...and his peak is pretty underrated, but it's pretty clearly McAvoy. I don't think Phaneuf ever really hit quite the same consistent Norris fringe level over nearly as much time.

Im not sure I agree on that.

Phaneuf was great when he entered the NHL. He was a physical beast and produced points. In his first 7 seasons he had 5 seasons top 20 in points and one top 5 finish. McAvoy plays a great game, but still have only placed two times in the top 20 in his career in points and none inside the top 10. His average point finish is 32nd place among defenceman in his seven first season to Phaneuf's 22nd. I dont really see McAvoy bringing a better defensive game than what Phaneuf brought his first seven seasons.

Phaneuf started to fall off after this, but the first seven seasons I have Phaneuf ahead.

Phaneuf at his pinnacle was a beast. Mcavoy hasn't been the same since Bergeron retired. He's good too but come on. Dion was a mean son of a gun. I'd never vote against him.

Phaneuf's prime was very short but at his absolute peak in 07-08 he was an elite top tier player and better than McAvoy has ever been. That said, outside of that season's peak McAvoy has been better consistently than pretty much any other season from Phaneuf.

Dion's wife alone make this a no brainer who wins....
you mean Avery's sloppy seconds?

McAvoy was voted on this website as a top 5 defenseman, Prime Phaneuf ain't touching that

Pfaneufs prime was the World Juniors.

He was going to be the second coming of Scott Stevens. If they kept the DPE rules Dion would be the top by a landslide.

Then when the post-lockout rules changed how the game was played, and the physicality Dion brought wasn't nearly as important.

Dion was a 50 point scoring, goal threat and the best hitter in the league at his peak but his D wasn’t without some questions.

I still voted for Charlie but let’s not forget who double Dion was when he was young in Calgary.

Depends a lot on how you interpret the question. If you're talking purely at the instant each was at their best, then Dion was an absolute monster. But obviously McAvoy has maintained a high level of play for much longer.

McAvoy is having a pretty bleh season offensively, but I think overall he's a better d-man than Phaneuf was. That's not a knock on Dion either.

It’s not a coincidence that Ullmark and Swayman both got paid (and with Ullmark winning a Vezina) with McAvoy playing in front of them.

Phaneuf was pretty fun in Calgary but he was totally a guy who’d get out of position to make a hit. McAvoy is a better all around defenseman imo, despite Phaneuf coming in 2nd place for a Norris.
