Did DeBoer just fire himself with the Oettinger fiasco?

Given the reaction he's getting, Deboer might as well just have just went Torts in the postgame lol

Babcock's like "I just made a guy make a list in the dressing room and I got run out of hockey. This guy flagged the team bus down, asked the driver to get out, got in, put it in R, then reversed up the tunnel until he saw his goalie, ran him over, put in D, then left skid marks on him as he peeled back over him."

He didnt force Bourque to take a careless penalty on his first shift.

Cant blame a rookie after sitting for almost 6 weeks watching his team play. DeBoer badly needed to make adjustments to his lineup but he waited too long again, the same as last year. Should have tried Johnston with Rantanen and the muffin Duchene should have been pushed down the lineup

Dumba should have gone in too, can't see him being any worse than Cody CC.

He was acting like he didn't just have a game where he only allowed 2 goals lol. Forward and defense who had like 2 goals in 3 games getting a huge pass. Ottors the last guy I worry about lol you just said that.

Pulls a goalie with a 0% save percentage, goalie storms off the bench, DeBoer screams for him to come back and sit his ass down.

Meanwhile, the goalie he puts in lets in two (maybe 3) goals that Oettinger might have stopped.

What a clusterf***.
DeBoer will be back for another season unfortunately but I didn’t like it as a Stars fan; team wasn’t doing anything but sitting on their ass. Not Oettingers fault.

Remember what happened another time Peter DeBoer "handled" a goalie?

He probably knew he was getting fired and blamed the one guy who he saw as moat responsible. You can't let in 2 goals on 2 shots every night. We oiler fans are all over skinner when he does it.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Both goals weren't Oettinger's fault. Dallas just came out flat-footed.

Why would you pull your Top 5 NHL goalie for a rusty career backup to save your season? Of course, he goes on to give up 2-3 questionable goals and Dallas gets blown out.

Horrible decision by DeBoer. He should have let his elite goalie stay in as he gave them the best chance to win. Had Oettinger stayed in the game, I think Dallas ties that game up at 3 or 4. All signs point to DeBoer getting fired soon. He's close to his usual expiration date (~3.6 seasons per team).

it helps otter. playing devils advocate with this, but now the off season focus will be on the coach pulling otter so early instead of otter taking the blame for the loss 2 years in a row. there will be talk about the forwards being old or the defense not being enough and they are ufa's dallas can walk away from. desmith is a no expectations back up that entered a bad situation. team didn't respond to the goalie change. otter is insulated now, the top 5 goalie can be angry, there can be what ifs, deboer can be replaced and the next coach doesn't need to sooth egos. this is how middle managers keep getting jobs, protect the company investments by distracting & deflecting on the way out.

At this point in the season you are ride or die with your goalies. Oettinger posted a .908 against Skinners .922. He lost the goalie battle, but he wasn't <.900 terrible. Really bad move to give your guy 2 shots to establish his play in the final game of the season. For all we know he shuts the door and it's a 2-2 game until overtime. Such a terrible, terrible, impulsive decision.

A terrible decision out of desperation and even worse response to the media. Pete just threw Otter under the Grave Digger Monster Truck and ran him over multiple times.

I think teams have figured out with Oettinger you gotta move the puck quickly and he's vulnerable. Its not like he has a late career Hextall problem of being slow or a bad mover but he simply always seems a second or so late to get in position on cross ice stuff or behind the net passes to the slot. If you just fire and fire at him from prime spots he's gonna stop you more than most goalies but if you force him to have to anticipate or move he seems below average
I think the key to exploiting Oettinger is to just play a team who doesn’t bother playing defense.

Deboer had a zillion opportunities throughout the series to send messages, whether to Benn or Wyatt Johnson or Duchene or Marchment… but no he decided to send a message to his team by benching the guy who gave up two breakaway goals because the defense didn’t bother.

I like Deboer but this series tells me a lot about him.
