Did DeBoer just fire himself with the Oettinger fiasco?

I find it absolutely bonkers the 2 coaches on the "hot seat" are ones that brought their teams to the Conference Finals and lost due to having clearly inferior lineups.

I hate to say this, but a Conference Finals appearance is the baseline for a successful season. It's a 32 team league. Final 4 means you were there near the end.

Scotty Bowman couldn't have coached the Stars or the Canes to a victory. They just don't have the elite talent or personnel.

I think the biggest issue here is how he pulled him. Deboer (or one of the assistants) should have told Ott he was making the change when he first skated to the bench for the timeout. That’s the normal, accepted way to do it. He obviously didn’t because Ott had started skating back to the net after the timeout ended. By waiting until the timeout was over and Ott was skating back to the net it drew even more attention to him.

It looks like Deboer’s intention was to embarrass him. That’s not going to fly with Ott nor anybody else on that club. If he could throw one guy under the bus he could throw any of them under the bus. Dallas played most of this series lifeless and looking like they’d tuned the coach out. Only a few players looked like they had a pulse. If Deboer hadn’t lost that room before tonight that stunt surely did it.

I didn’t blame it on Jake then goes on to blame it on Jake.
It's really not Jake's fault, but he's just an awful goaltender so what can you do.

I also love this quote because while I know his "sample size" is the games against EDM, I prefer to read it as the sample size being the 2 goals on 2 shots, which as we all know is a MASSIVE sample size.

You win as a team and you lose as a team. Maybe his emotions got the better of him and I assume he already regrets it but the damage is done. He said what should have been the quiet part out loud. I could see Jake saying him or me, although they are both pros and could likely figure this out. Perception is 9/10ths of the law and the optics show he doesn't have his players back. He can't undo this now so I think it kind of has to be either Pete or Jake, even if it isn't player driven. Nill has to show he has his players' backs. The rest of the team will, by human nature, kind of pick sides on this.

DeBoer sucks. Sixth Conference final loss in a row, with three different Orgs. Players gotta go out and play the game, but you can't tell me his coaching sets them up for success.

Every time he gets near the end of the Dance he gets outcoached. No adjustments, whining to the media every game, called a timeout and looked mostly limp trying to pump his team up. He's the common denominator for teams choking, Vegas fired him and then beat him the next year on the way to their Cup...lmao

Maybe he should go coach the Canes, seems like their conference finals futility is equally matched.
dont think a coach that can carry his team to final 4 'sucks' .
He is arguably the 4th best coach in the top hockey league.

It is pretty hilarious that so many people think PDB is a terrible coach when his teams just keep making the Final 4. Like, who is better then? Should they have hired Lane Lambert like Seattle?

They lost to better teams in the Conference Final. That's how it goes.
I just posted on the Blues board that I think there are maybe only two times where I think it could be argued his teams had a decent chance and squandered it (2017-2018 SJ and 2020-2021 LV).

The counter point would be he has only lost to teams that had better records than him 3 times in the postseason (2015-2016 Pittsburgh,2016-2017 Edmonton, and 2017-2018 Vegas).

Oettinger needs to pull a Patrick Roy
He'd still be an above average playoff goalie getting $8M+, no matter where he goes. Not a Conn Smythe winning Patrick Roy. He might win the cup with a better 5v5 offensive group or better D, but he isnt winning a cup in Dallas.

What made the whole thing even funnier was the fact that Oettinger had to sit right next to Ferraro between the benches, as he and McDonaugh were talking about him/the decision. That had to be awkward.

DeBoer should be canned after his comments/actions, you can see after the 2nd goal he lost control. He had every right to be pissed, but definitely could have handled everything better.

Then Dallas retains half and adds a little less. It's the price you pay to have a goalie that has played in multiple Cup finals.
Chances of them changing the coach are a lot higher than trading the franchise goalie.

I think DAL should throw some money at Klingberg and Kapanen in the offseason. Both would instantly improve that group.
