Proposal: Devs-Blues

Hamilton doesn't seem to be able to shoot the puck like he once did.

He's injury prone and overpriced.

The shot is still there in terms of power, I thought. The accuracy wasn't as good this year. That could be a byproduct of the injuries, i don't know, but he clearly still pushes offense.

The injury issues are legit, but I don't think the salary is a onerous as people think. This is a bad free agent class with money to burn. People are going to get paid this off season and it's going to be a lot of meh players who break the bank.

There will be salary coming back to the devils in any trade for Dougie, but I also assume that salary coming back will be something of need for the devils so i don't think of the salary coming back in a negative capacity as some.

There were times last season where I thought he should shoot and he deferred and passed the puck.

Maybe it's nothing, but watching him, my gut is telling me he wasn't fully healed or he lost his confidence in his shot.

Either way, I think he's lost that big booming shot that made him so dangerous on the PP.

I hope I'm wrong. I'm a Devils fan after all, but I'm really concerned.

Do the Blues have any interest in trading Schenn?

I could see a deal around Schenn for Hamilton making sense from a Devils perspective. Devils could use a 2C like Schenn that could either play with Hughes or as a 3C behind Hischier-Hughes.

I was spitballing that something like Schenn + Leddy for Hamilton would be a wash salary wise.

Pre 4 Nations, yes, after the run they made, probably not. With him being captain, I expect him to stay. In the interviews after the playoffs, Army has said his goal is a 200 ft offensive forward, and our top 4 is good enough "for now". I wouldn't rule out an upgrade on Faulk, but it won't be our 1st priority, and moving Schenn just means we'd have to acquire 2 Cs, as Sunny is the one we likely want to upgrade and Schenn will take the other middle 6 C spot.

NJD is not moving Nemec and Hamilton.

With Kovy out to start the year that leaves us with just 1 NHL ready RHD in Pesce to start the year
That's fair but the interest is and should be low for Hamilton and it won't get the forward back from the Blues that they are proposing and that's the issue here.

Make the trade around Nemec and then the Blues Will have some interest

If it's around Hamilton they won't pick up the phone nor should they.

Fair enough, it sounded like Fitzgerald made a run at Schenn at the deadline too. Not sure if he actually got close to a deal or if it was leaked for him to save face when his only center addition was Glass.

It doesn’t sound like the Blues are looking for a major shakeup. I know I was looking at Hamilton + Haula for Schenn + Leddy + Texier being pretty damn close salary-wise, but not sure if that makes sense for the Blues.

I do thing the pieces exist for both teams to make some sort of a deal, so it definitely wouldn't shock me. If Schenn is available, Jersey was always a team that made sense to me.

After Schenn nixed a trade to Toronto and then we went on our tear, I really doubt he'd approve a trade most anywhere--and with center being such a need league-wide, I'm not sure there's a center-to-Jersey trade to be made anymore.

On the other hand, if we move vets elsewhere, Hamilton is someone we would probably consider taking on. I dunno that I'd like it--our D core is SO old--but if we move Faulk in a trade elsewhere, taking on all of Hamilton's contract for a pick or two is something I could easily see DA doing.

Schenn’s NTC becomes 15 team MNTC on July 1, but who knows if the Devils will be on the no trade list.

I've been following the Blues Since Hull-Oates and and for the first time in a long time a GM said that he'd like to start moving toward their younger players... My guess if they want Kyrou their best NHL ready prospect(s) will need to be involved in the trade, not the Devils older players.

He hasn't been able to stay healthy the last several seasons and production is down. I suspect the consensus around the league is Hamilton is somewhere between a neutral and negative asset. Despite the cap going up, 10% of next year's cap is still a pretty significant allocation for a guy that hasn't been able to stay on the ice and hasn't been as productive when he has played.

I could see him being a lot easier to move after his 10M signing bonus is paid after July 1 and the actual $ owed over the remaining 3 is around 15M.

It's interesting starting point. I would think Schenn would have more value than Hamilton, given their contracts. What else would Devils add?

The Blues need to add a center who can score, not subtract one. Even if you discount the fact that he's the captain, it would have to be extremely worth their while. I cannot imagine a collection of parts or a seed that won't sprout for another three or five years would entice them.

So Blues trade Schenn who is a 2C (the most valued commodity this offseason) for two capdumps in Hamilton and Haula!

LMAO!!!🤣

I vehemently disagree with that.

He still drives offense at an elite level.

NJD was pretty anemic offensively without him on the ice last year, but with him we had the best goals/60 on the PP of any dman in the league, and the 3rd best EV goals/60 of any dman in the league.

Realistically from my perspective I would loathe moving him at all this year. The goal is to score more goals next year from NJD, and losing hamilton makes that vastly more difficult. Once Luke takes that next step maybe, but he had a rough 2nd half after looking great to start the year.
