Wasn't this guy drafted before Kopitar?
The 2005 Draft still annoys me in that it's the only once that I wasn't able to watch since following prospects in 1995. As hokey as it is, I enjoy the drama of watching. My Sharks buddy told me later that he prematurely started celebrating when the Sharks traded up from #12 to #8. He thought for sure they were moving up for Kopitar.
If I ever had a few minutes to talk with a scout/GM, the 2005 Draft process might be an interesting subject.
Typically teams have a general idea of where they'll be picking, especially back then when only one team could move up via the lottery. Teams would then usually start focusing on a shorter list; Ie if you were picking out of the top 10 in 2008, you probably wouldn't have your scouts spend too much time watching Doughty/Bogosian/Pietrangelo.
But with 2005, teams had zero idea how the draft might work. The lottery was conducted on July 22nd (the draft was July 30th) well after everybody's season was over. Since teams had to cast a wider net on potential picks, I can't help but wonder if that contributed to a little more wackiness than usual.
As for Seto, I hope he's been able to stay sober. It sounded like he was in a better mental state last year at Toronto's camp, but it didn't seem to translate on the ice. The Devils had a couple of reasonable PTO contributions from Petr Sykora and Scott Gomez at a time when both seemed like toast. No real harm in bringing him in for camp, maybe Seto would be okay with playing in Ontario again?
