If they miss they playoffs then Fitz is fired, period. It would be completely unacceptable with Hughes or without Hughes.
That said, I don't think that's going to happen. I think getting a real LHD will completely change the calculus on defense, we've functionally only been playing with two pairings for the last month now. Markstrom is back. Special teams are still clicking. Keefe knows what it takes.
The issue here is relative value vs objective value.Traff is not a nothing prospect. I got on someone for not understanding what 27% means the other day, and yes, Traff is not a long-term NHLer most of the time. But sometimes he is, and he's had a good D+1, and his game is what this team is missing. I don't understand how he got included in this trade.
The winger prospects I'd rate over him are Gritsyuk (who is barely a prospect at his age) and Hameenaho, and he's probably on par with Squires.
Is it October 10th yet? Can't wait until next yearHey I started a main board thread that I hope doesn't get bumped and get me banned from this board. But even though they've been playing bad the last few weeks, losing Hamilton, Jack Hughes, and Siegs to medium-to-long term injuries within the span of a month is enough to put a stop to any Cup hopes this year. So now the Devils are the same as the Red Wings, Senators, Canadiens, and Blue Jackets: a young team hoping to sneak into the playoffs to build something for the future. Sucks that it's ANOTHER year of needing that mentality but we don't have a 1st this year so might as well try to win as many games as possible. But no, it's not the same as disappointing Mets teams that just signed Beltran, Delgado, and Johan Santana.
I genuinely felt good after watching them take apart the Rangers that day. But the day I posted that is the day the swoon began.Yeah, you did us no favors with that thread and it will 100% be bumped by a douchebag Rangers fan if they miss lol
I agree. But the reality is, the organization cannot just say “f*** you bums” see ya next year. This is a business and there are plenty of short and long term implications if that’s the route they wanted to take.
I'm guilty on this. Have had a the last few games either on the background while I do job applications or on the radio while I deliver Doordash. Have been paying more attention to Jokic and Doncic games (I'm Balkan). And I normally can't stand watching more than 30 minutes of regular season basketball. Most of this fanbase is already checked out this year, all they virtually have to do is make it to the playoffs and have a decent showing with the idea that they'd do better with healthy Jack in the lineup that a Cup dream is possible.

How about this, with this trade it seems Fitz is going for it anyway so my prediction is: THE DEVILS WILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS. If they don't, I will set Matt Rempe as my avatar which will get me ostracized from this board anyway
Lol it's ok man, just no more threads on the main board. Deal?![]()
He got a LD which they need. Nemec and Casey on their wrong side doesn't work. He's a vet who plays a decent 3rd line spot and has played well for his career. He has been in the NHL with no demotions for his 10th season now.I mean yeah…two guys out for weeks, they don’t entirely trust Nemec and they sure don’t trust Casey to take a regular shift this year.
for me it’s about the opportunity cost of what else could have been acquired for that price. A few months (hockey gods willing) of a third pair defenseman should not cost a second round pick on its own, let alone a forward prospect, on a team that will likely be desperate for cheap depth forwards over the next 5 years. You all cherish picks and prospects way to much. I know this has been said before but still.
Our Core forward group (Jack Nico Bratt and Timo) is signed and young, we have L Hughes Casey Nemec and Silayev on the defense still coming or already here. Lenny and Grits coming soon for the forwards. The fact remains the picks aren't anywhere near that important for the next little bit.
YOU MAKE THE PLAYOFFS! You don't just give up on a season because Jack Hughes got hurt or Dougie is a banged up. Once your in the playoffs anything can happen. We have all seen goalies carry teams in the playoffs, we have seen random guys step up and become stars in the playoffs.
The market is always different, retention of salary cost more at times then others. Id much rather be working toward a playoff spot with a 3rd parking of Dumoulin (+2 on a terrible defensive team btw) and Nemec or Casey then Casey and Nemec, one of which is playing on his off side.
Like it, don't like it, whatever, I am on the side of making the playoffs.
While an interesting thought, couldnt NJ have simply paid the retention price but go without it?
Unless salary retention is strictly for AAV and not real dollars; otherwise why would Anaheims ownership want to waste a million for a team who doesnt need it
Misyul has regressed this season and Hatakka is not close to everyday ready. Neither would help this team make the last ditch effort they need to get into the show.If we need a third pairing guy just get Hatakka up here or Misyul.
I'm not going to argue with you because I know you don't change your mind, but his history says differently.because the player that they traded for is a bad player.

i think the Grabner trade is actually a good parallel, because my real issue is that it signals a bad process. Grabner was shooting the lights out and was clearly not gonna keep up his goal pace, especially coming to a Devils team that was a black hole of offensive creativity and skill. He scored 2 goals in 21 games after the trade and had 0 points in 2 playoff games.I love the draft, but it is just a late 2nd round pick (in a weak draft that reputedly gets sketchy by the mid-first round) and a C tier prospect.
Jeff Marek and Brian Burke were talking recently about how each home game is like 1.5 million in revenue in the owner's pocket. So there is some pressure to at least qualify for the playoffs. I get why most fans have the mentality that it's Cup or bust, but there is some value in making the postseason. Some were still hung up on giving up Yegor Rykov and a 2nd rounder for Michael Grabner, but I don't think anybody with the team lost sleep over that one. Even if we got bounced in the first round after barely qualifying, the owner got a couple home games, and the general fan base was optimistic about the following season.
If Kovecevic walks this summer maybe Dumolin will like playing here and sign a team friendly deal for 2 years or so to stick around. Plus we will be familiar with how he plays under Keefe's system.
I have a feeling Kovacevic is going to proce himself out here. Siegenthaler, Pesce, Doumilin & Dillom to play PK and shutdown role is good depth.
Agree bad deal Verbeek fleeced himknow its bad when im crawling out of my prospect hole to say something lol what a god awful deal
If he is on the hot seat then the owners shouldn't let him make deals just fire him...Deals can and will haunt you when they are done out of desperation...If he gave up just the pick fine but give up a prospect showing upside did he not question why Anaheim asked for him in the deal....He's drafted all these defense heavy drafts and goes and trades for them as well it's stupid asset management....I like Dumolin but not at that priceAnd I do think this is a prelude to two more moves that Fitz will make. I truly do believe he is on the hot seat and I expect a lot more to be done and in this market it will cost a lot. So a lot of you folks need to be prepared for it.
