Confirmed with Link: Devils trade 2nd rounder and Herman Traff for Brian Doumilin

If they miss they playoffs then Fitz is fired, period. It would be completely unacceptable with Hughes or without Hughes.

That said, I don't think that's going to happen. I think getting a real LHD will completely change the calculus on defense, we've functionally only been playing with two pairings for the last month now. Markstrom is back. Special teams are still clicking. Keefe knows what it takes.

Man, I don't know. It's giving Aaron Rodgers hurt week 1 with this Jack Hughes injury. If they were fully healthy, I'd agree but he's just gonna say that Jack going down hurt the whole team and at the time where he was planning to have an active deadline. We'll see, it depends how bad the miss is. If they fully just cave out, then yes. If they miss by a point or two, he's probably back unfortunately

Traff is not a nothing prospect. I got on someone for not understanding what 27% means the other day, and yes, Traff is not a long-term NHLer most of the time. But sometimes he is, and he's had a good D+1, and his game is what this team is missing. I don't understand how he got included in this trade.

The winger prospects I'd rate over him are Gritsyuk (who is barely a prospect at his age) and Hameenaho, and he's probably on par with Squires.
The issue here is relative value vs objective value.

Objectively, Traff is an ok prospect. He's done fine in the SHL, but has not set the world on fire.
Relatively, he's our top heavy, right shot wing prospect. He's probably a top 10 prospect for us.

It's probably not so different from how the Oilers feel about giving up Lachance for 25% retention.

The real issue here is something you've called out in the past: the Devils system should have a number of guys similar to Traff (potential to play meaningful AHL games, possibly NHL games). Our 2019 draft outside of Hughes is looking miserable. Our 2021 draft maybe similar. We'll see about our 2023 draft.

Here’s my truth.

I hate the F&$king Rangers!!!

I would rather the Devils do everything to keep this boat afloat.

Sorry Not/Not Sorry.

Plus, they need reps. I was hoping the Devils win the cup in the years 26-28. Missing the playoffs twice would be catastrophic.

Hey I started a main board thread that I hope doesn't get bumped and get me banned from this board. But even though they've been playing bad the last few weeks, losing Hamilton, Jack Hughes, and Siegs to medium-to-long term injuries within the span of a month is enough to put a stop to any Cup hopes this year. So now the Devils are the same as the Red Wings, Senators, Canadiens, and Blue Jackets: a young team hoping to sneak into the playoffs to build something for the future. Sucks that it's ANOTHER year of needing that mentality but we don't have a 1st this year so might as well try to win as many games as possible. But no, it's not the same as disappointing Mets teams that just signed Beltran, Delgado, and Johan Santana.
Is it October 10th yet? Can't wait until next year 🙄

Yeah, you did us no favors with that thread and it will 100% be bumped by a douchebag Rangers fan if they miss lol
I genuinely felt good after watching them take apart the Rangers that day. But the day I posted that is the day the swoon began.

How about this, with this trade it seems Fitz is going for it anyway so my prediction is: THE DEVILS WILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS. If they don't, I will set Matt Rempe as my avatar which will get me ostracized from this board anyway

It's NJ for crying out loud - no more left turns Fitz! Use the jug handle!!!

I agree. But the reality is, the organization cannot just say “f*** you bums” see ya next year. This is a business and there are plenty of short and long term implications if that’s the route they wanted to take.

Most of this fanbase is already checked out this year, all they virtually have to do is make it to the playoffs and have a decent showing with the idea that they'd do better with healthy Jack in the lineup that a Cup dream is possible.

I'm guilty on this. Have had a the last few games either on the background while I do job applications or on the radio while I deliver Doordash. Have been paying more attention to Jokic and Doncic games (I'm Balkan). And I normally can't stand watching more than 30 minutes of regular season basketball.

Lol it's ok man, just no more threads on the main board. Deal?

I mean yeah…two guys out for weeks, they don’t entirely trust Nemec and they sure don’t trust Casey to take a regular shift this year.
He got a LD which they need. Nemec and Casey on their wrong side doesn't work. He's a vet who plays a decent 3rd line spot and has played well for his career. He has been in the NHL with no demotions for his 10th season now.

He's also worn the A for 4 seasons with the Pens which says he must have some leadership skills of which the Devils could use. He has won a 2 Cups and knows what it takes to get to the dance and the kind of effort it takes to win it all when you get there.

The 2nd they will surrender will be way down the line as Winipeg and Edmonton are going to finish high and the draft pool from what I have read is not expected to be rich.

Traff is not a highly regarded prospect. He's a forward who has never put up big numbers for a full season. He was not fawned over by this Board when he was drafted. Most said, "Who? Why not XXX or YYY or ZZZ? There were much better guys available!"

The biggest factor is GM Fitz didn't spend very much of the wad he has bankrolled and the centers and good top 6 forward are still incoming. Now if he doesn't spend it on those guys, I will not be a happy camper either.

This was a meh deal for a necessary piece.

I have watched Hatakka since he was sent back to Utica and I'm not impressed that he is ready to hold up his end of the bargain in the Devils lineup as an everyday D-man. Before the season began I saw him as a Comet not a Devil or at best a press box extra in NJ for short emergency use. DeSimone was a much better D-man. Utah may not be an NHL powerhouse, but Nick is a Hockey Club member and playing in the NHL.

You all cherish picks and prospects way to much. I know this has been said before but still.

Our Core forward group (Jack Nico Bratt and Timo) is signed and young, we have L Hughes Casey Nemec and Silayev on the defense still coming or already here. Lenny and Grits coming soon for the forwards. The fact remains the picks aren't anywhere near that important for the next little bit.

YOU MAKE THE PLAYOFFS! You don't just give up on a season because Jack Hughes got hurt or Dougie is a banged up. Once your in the playoffs anything can happen. We have all seen goalies carry teams in the playoffs, we have seen random guys step up and become stars in the playoffs.

The market is always different, retention of salary cost more at times then others. Id much rather be working toward a playoff spot with a 3rd parking of Dumoulin (+2 on a terrible defensive team btw) and Nemec or Casey then Casey and Nemec, one of which is playing on his off side.

Like it, don't like it, whatever, I am on the side of making the playoffs.
for me it’s about the opportunity cost of what else could have been acquired for that price. A few months (hockey gods willing) of a third pair defenseman should not cost a second round pick on its own, let alone a forward prospect, on a team that will likely be desperate for cheap depth forwards over the next 5 years.

While an interesting thought, couldnt NJ have simply paid the retention price but go without it?

Unless salary retention is strictly for AAV and not real dollars; otherwise why would Anaheims ownership want to waste a million for a team who doesnt need it

Sure, but if NJ is going to pay the trade cost for retention anyway then there's no benefit to turning it down.

Teams retain both AAV and real dollars. For Anaheim this means they're paying Dumoulin $340k in real dollars with the retention. Very possible that increased the trade return for Dumoulin from a 3rd round pick to a 2nd round pick, or increased the quality of the prospect added in the trade. From Anaheim's POV it would be retaining for a greater trade return. Whether NJ wanted that retention or not isn't important, as long as Anaheim is adequately compensated. In principle no different then a 3rd party team agreeing to retain on a player in return for picks or prospects, as NJ recently did for Lachance.

If Kovecevic walks this summer maybe Dumolin will like playing here and sign a team friendly deal for 2 years or so to stick around. Plus we will be familiar with how he plays under Keefe's system.
I have a feeling Kovacevic is going to proce himself out here. Siegenthaler, Pesce, Doumilin & Dillom to play PK and shutdown role is good depth.

I love the draft, but it is just a late 2nd round pick (in a weak draft that reputedly gets sketchy by the mid-first round) and a C tier prospect.

Jeff Marek and Brian Burke were talking recently about how each home game is like 1.5 million in revenue in the owner's pocket. So there is some pressure to at least qualify for the playoffs. I get why most fans have the mentality that it's Cup or bust, but there is some value in making the postseason. Some were still hung up on giving up Yegor Rykov and a 2nd rounder for Michael Grabner, but I don't think anybody with the team lost sleep over that one. Even if we got bounced in the first round after barely qualifying, the owner got a couple home games, and the general fan base was optimistic about the following season.
i think the Grabner trade is actually a good parallel, because my real issue is that it signals a bad process. Grabner was shooting the lights out and was clearly not gonna keep up his goal pace, especially coming to a Devils team that was a black hole of offensive creativity and skill. He scored 2 goals in 21 games after the trade and had 0 points in 2 playoff games.

Similarly, i don’t have a problem with the IDEA of trading Traff and a 2nd for defensive depth. But to use it on 33yo Brian Dumoulin who HAPPENS to be the son of a Devils employee and HAPPENS to have played for the Penguins when Fitzgerald was there reeks of bad process.

one is a righty and one is a lefty, so they dont have much to do with one another

Dumolin plays a heavy game but giving up a fwd prospect who was trending well when we lack them in the system was stupid....Win for Anaheim and the retention means he's working on another deal where he will probably overpay as well....

And I do think this is a prelude to two more moves that Fitz will make. I truly do believe he is on the hot seat and I expect a lot more to be done and in this market it will cost a lot. So a lot of you folks need to be prepared for it.
If he is on the hot seat then the owners shouldn't let him make deals just fire him...Deals can and will haunt you when they are done out of desperation...If he gave up just the pick fine but give up a prospect showing upside did he not question why Anaheim asked for him in the deal....He's drafted all these defense heavy drafts and goes and trades for them as well it's stupid asset management....I like Dumolin but not at that price
