Confirmed with Link: Devils trade 2nd rounder and Herman Traff for Brian Doumilin

I don't even think this is all that wild. They have been saying they wanted depth D even before Siegs got hurt.

Traff is a nothing prospect. 2nd feels steep but it's not all that much in the end.

Traff is not a nothing prospect. I got on someone for not understanding what 27% means the other day, and yes, Traff is not a long-term NHLer most of the time. But sometimes he is, and he's had a good D+1, and his game is what this team is missing. I don't understand how he got included in this trade.

The winger prospects I'd rate over him are Gritsyuk (who is barely a prospect at his age) and Hameenaho, and he's probably on par with Squires.

Everyone is complaining about the weakness of this draft.... Draft picks are over valued as is. Fitz clearly wants to win, so why not give it a go.
It's not the question of moving the picks, it'd the value for

If it took three 2nds to land MCCann, Fitz gets an applause however he used one of those for a who type dman over the age of 30

I haven't scrolled through every page of hate yet. I did read this:

The Ducks retained 50% of Dumoulin’s remaining salary for the season (he made $3.15 million against the cap this season) in the deal. The second-round pick they acquired will be the higher between that of the Edmonton Oilers or Winnipeg Jets, per the conditions of the swap.

per: Ducks trade Brian Dumoulin to New Jersey Devils

So you figure that is a mid-round 2nd. And also the retained salary - so perhaps something else is going on? Cause otherwise that pick would be higher I think (3rd or 4th).

I don't think this is anything like... terrible. Wasteful perhaps? Unnecessary? - depends on whats up with Hamilton and Siegs.

You can argue bad asset management - and I wouldn't disagree. We do have 2 other 2nds (likely keep the one from the Allen trade), but you'd like to see better return.

EDIT: Please don't yell at me. just kindly disagree.

I hate Fitz so much. You'd have to be a complete delusional asshat to still support this guy. The timing of his action and/or inaction makes no sense for 2 years now. The value he gives up makes no sense. He doesn't know how to build a roster, which includes ASSET MANAGEMENT, understanding your window, and positional value.

Launch this neanderthal into the sun already. And no, Marty has no business taking over either. This team hasn't understood the goalie market for a decade and if he has any influence rn, bet your ass it's there. And no, overpaying for elderly Markstrom and Allen when this team isn't a contender doesn't change that.

This organization is dumb enough to make Marty the next GM - which would probably be a disaster. I have quickly lost confidence in this management group.

Not going to judge this trade until after the deadline because something weird is going on. They just retained on the Frederic deal for a poor return and then now are paying a premium for another team to retain on this deal.

It would be a Chuck Fletcher level of planning if they don't do anything else.

Yep, exactly this. Should we be doing backflips about the great value of this trade? No, absolutely not. But the overreaction around here is nuts. This is how TDL deals go. It’s almost always “overpayment.” The team is in a bad position because they’re damned if they do, damned if they don’t. Ultimately, they need to go for it. Even if it’s true, it’s a terrible message to send to the players, fans, and the rest of the league: “we’re in a playoff spot right now, but willingly dropping out because our best player is hurt.”

I don't like it, but I guess let's see what else happens. Maybe it makes more sense after tomorrow. Although I'm getting the feeling it won't because this season has become a horror show again.

I love the draft, but it is just a late 2nd round pick (in a weak draft that reputedly gets sketchy by the mid-first round) and a C tier prospect.

Jeff Marek and Brian Burke were talking recently about how each home game is like 1.5 million in revenue in the owner's pocket. So there is some pressure to at least qualify for the playoffs. I get why most fans have the mentality that it's Cup or bust, but there is some value in making the postseason. Some were still hung up on giving up Yegor Rykov and a 2nd rounder for Michael Grabner, but I don't think anybody with the team lost sleep over that one. Even if we got bounced in the first round after barely qualifying, the owner got a couple home games, and the general fan base was optimistic about the following season.

Louder

Feel as though one of Nemec or Casey are gone by 3pm tomorrow as this move seems weird by itself.
I don’t even mind necessarily moving one of them for long term help. But you’re depressing their value and the spectrum of players you can target by insisting on doing it at the deadline. If they move one of them, it should be in a hockey trade during the summer, not when everyone knows you’re desperate and chasing.

They didn't get a poor return for retaining on the Frederic deal. They got an actual player whose value is harder to evaluate than a 4th round pick in a draft 2 years from now, but it's not worse than that, it's just that you hardly ever see those two things traded for one another so it's rare that it comes up.

Fitz probably gunna trade some more forward prospects for a major player...only logic possible
What's funny now is this move alone doesn't move the needle enough considering the capital exchanged. So did Fitz just light material assets on fire (AGAIN) with no chance in hell of contending for an older player w/ limited term? Or is he about to trade one of the top 3 D prospects for a C? Either way, folks should be concerned considering his utter incompetence.

One plausible answer: retention wasn't optional.

If Anaheim was ready and willing to retain to increase the trade return, and there were other teams interested in acquiring Dumoulin with retention then the Devils would be bidding against other teams with retention included.
While an interesting thought, couldnt NJ have simply paid the retention price but go without it?

Unless salary retention is strictly for AAV and not real dollars; otherwise why would Anaheims ownership want to waste a million for a team who doesnt need it

Noooooo! They even got to one of our most positive posters

Reading through this thread and as usual, people losing their mind over trading Traff when that's not really the issue here (and why people on the opposite end are wondering what's the big deal about trading Traff).

This isn't about trading Traff. It's about piss poor asset management.
