The Mike Jefferson situation is hardly relative here.

I think the word you mean is relevant, and I think it's very relevant. David Frost complained publicly when Danton was first a healthy scratch. Danton was not demoted, nor was he really punished in any way. The second time that happened, he was suspended (or left the team) and that was the end of his Devils' career.

During contract disputes, players signed overseas. It happened multiple times. Players were seldom traded as a result - Morrison was only dealt, the story goes, because he wanted a trade, not the other way around.

I know I shouldn't interrupt this slapfight, but let's compare the next 10 players drafted:

Zacha: Provorov, Werenski, Meier, Rantanen, Crouse, Gurianov, Zboril, DeBrusk, Senyshyn, Barzal
McLeod: Bean, McAvoy, Kunin, Chychrun, Fabbro, Stanley, Bellows, Cholowski, Gauthier, Rubtsov

It's not even a comparison - anyone would take the first group 10 out of 10 times.

So the bust in tough draft year is ok - But the NHL player averaging 33 point pace over 4 years is bad? That doesn't make sense

No I meant relative....Meaning relationship...Meaning there is no relationship to any other Devil situation. Bringing him up is truly ludicrous

Considering the next 4 players who were drafted are presently 1st line NHLers or top pairing D, yes, it does make sense. But they are about the same level of draft pick failure in terms of theoretical expected value to actual value.

So what is the expected value of the #1 overall from 2017?

If Gallant wasn’t interested in a collaborative structure then he wasn’t going to be a good fit as the Devils coach, even if he’s a great coach.

The collaborative structure could be the wrong approach but it’s the one the Devils are going with.

Interesting that if that is true - and I don't know the source, if it's an episode of Puck Soup I'm assuming it's Wysh? I don't know - anyway, that would theoretically rule him out in Seattle too, I imagine, as they seem to be going with this sort of approach.

Yeah if they're firing a GM cause he wouldn't go along with the collaborative multi-pronged approach, they aren't shelving the structure for a head coach months later.

It does seem like they wanted a big-name vet guy (or splash with Gronborg) and Ruff was probably the biggest name they could get to come.

What is up with Scott Stevens? He left the Minnesota gig because he didn't like being away from family. If they all still live in NJ, I suppose that would not be as much of a problem here and I don't know if he has enough experience for that. I have to admit I barely watched any games of the Oates/Stevens gong show half-year as I was mostly rooting for the team to tank. We need a really good defensive coach to install a system here. Having Scotty around the team (along with Marty) would help bring back some of that team loyalty feel that has been missing since Lou left.

will he get back into coaching? basically, scotty doesn’t know. so don’t tell scotty

personally love this move. can’t see a bad thing with it, we can really only go up from here and i think Fitz is a really respected hockey mind. glad he’s getting his chance. excited to see what his version of “having cap space is” in terms of trades, signings, etc.

We used a #11 over to get him and had a crack at significantly better players...It is literally 5 spots difference.

I don't think an NHL 3rd liner with 4 years under his belt at 23 years old is all that disappointing....Certainly not when you compare Zacha to McLeod who is 22 years old and still hasn't cracked the NHL and is a disappointed in the AHL...McLeod has played 108 AHL games and has 14 goals in that time...That is honestly unfathomable. You can make all kinks of excuses but that is just unbelievably bad...Ryan Kujawinski is out of hockey now and produced goals at about that rate while being a regular scratch and from the 3rd line.

First off it was 12 not 11. Secondly again comparing a 6 to 12? That doesn’t look good for Zacha lol. That is also a lot different fyi. 6 your drafting top line talent. 12 your drafting top 6-9 talent.

sure mike can bust but a 6 busting or a 12 busting? No comparison 6 is worse.

Hopefully he isn't the only one. I can see Ruff being a good coach for a lot of the young guys, even Severson.

It’s almost like everyone stepped back off the ledge and realized that ruff isn’t a bad choice. As John Maclean famously once said. “Welcome to the party pal”

The nhl is filled with players like Zacha. Sure he’s got some positives that others don’t and some negatives that others don’t. I’m sure he will have a long nhl career. He’s still a bust. Do you consider Adam larrson a bust?

This gets brought up all the time. Its really semantics, but whenever I think "bust" I think of someone like Yakupov who isn't even in the league

Zacha is not a bust. He is an OK NHLer and should carve out a career. A bust to me is someone who can't even carve out a career in the league. I think "disappointment" is much more appropriate than bust.

Kind of related, but I also find it funny when people call 2nd, 3rd etc round picks "busts". People really need to look at the percentage of those players who even have any semblance of an NHL career.
