I don't think the increased ratings for Olympic hockey really translate into more interest for the NHL in the United States, but it's fun to watch and we get the same regular season regardless. This is contingent on the Olympics being in a reasonable time zone - the NHL should not stop its season to go to Beijing or Tokyo or whatever.

How about instead moving the legends game from November to the usual All-Star weekend. Put the kabosh on the ASG and give all the players time off. The league already sucks at promoting today's players (not that many of them have any personality, but that's another story) and fans can basically watch them already with an ESPN+ sub or, ahem, alternative methods.

We still would want to showcase the leagues best players though. That's really what the AllStar game is about.

"Most analyses attribute the growing interest in hockey among Americans to three main themes: 1) the Miracle on Ice in the 1980 Olympics, 2) Wayne Gretzky being traded to the LA Kings, and 3) NHL expansion. While the first two are challenging to validate definitively, the impact of NHL expansion aligns with the growth in USA Hockey memberships by state over the years."

The number of US born NHL players doubled 10 years after the 1980 Olympics.... that's before new wave expansion.

I think the Miracle on ice was such a singular event in such a specific time that I wonder if it's impact could ever be duplicated in modern day.

We'd get just as many youtube video and blogger articles tearing the team down for every little thing as we would people embracing them. And then after they won, it'd just be a bunch of people talking about how they weren't really good and were just lucky, etc etc etc.

The only worthwhile All-Star Game is baseball because they treat it like a regular game. The Pro Bowl and the NBA and NHL games are games where they play no defense and not with much care because they don't want to get hurt. I can't blame them, but it makes for a poor watch.

Definitely could never be duplicated.

But that doesn't lessen the fact that everyone loves to watch and celebrate big global competitions.

It's fun. And people who never give a second thought to certain events/sports become interested. I mean they made a damn movie about Eddie the Eagle and Jamaican bobsledding.

All of us over 30 crowd dream for the Scott Stevens/ Theo Fluery All Star game days.

Chaste Stillman has 2 points in 15 games and is a -7 for Utica. He has to be one of our worst 1st round picks ever along with guys like John Quenneville and Stefan Matteau.
I'd argue definitely worse than Quenneville and Matteau, who were picked 30th and 29th I think? As it stands, Stillman may wind up appearing in fewer games for our NHL team than those guys did for us.

Lance Ward at 10th overall in 1996 is definitely worse than Stillman, but he's maybe the worst of the modern era.

hard to play defense (or even offense) in the pro bowl seeing as it doesn't exist anymore :D

*it was changed in 2023 to a non-contact flag football game so minimal chance at injury

The only reason I don't think it's as bad as Quenneville is we should've never even made that selection. It should've just been forfeited and we would've had a mid teen pick the next year I believe. No reason to have even made that pick.

Should I be happy about the 4 Nations?!

F*ck! Of course, when the Devils are playing well…

Just, don’t get burnt out or injured!!!

It has been enjoyable watching the Rangers spiral out of control. I also love the idea that Chris Drury really kicked things off, and otherewise they would have figured things out on their own.

Having said that - i've seen this Rangers film before. They have too many good players to not make the playoffs. Having a stud goalie and great Dman starts it. Panarin is still a [regular season] star. They have enough of a roster to make it there.

The east bubble is mid enough that making the playoffs shouldn't be a problem for them.

Who is pushing them out? The Isles? Philly? Columbus? Buffalo?
