The Vitek's mask and pads is my favorite combo of any Devils goalie in years.

Cory's best set was probably his World Cup equipment.

I just think you have some kind of weird perception that unless we allow 15 shots total, that we didn't play well defensively. This isn't the trap era anymore...teams are going to get chances and odd man rushes in EVERY game. EVERY team allows them. Yes, Carolina had a few chances early, but the 2nd half of the game they basically did nothing. They had 6 high-danger chances total the entire game. Thats outstanding defense. Not saying Vanecek wasn't also great, because he was. But the point remains.

(this is the part where you tell me that high-danger chances don't matter and you believe your eyes)
This is like the exact opposite of what I've said in literally a thousand posts on this board. Way to go. I'm completely fine with allowing fifty shots in a game if they arent of terrific quality. It is all you bean counting dopes that get upset when our goalies give up two goals on five shots and the depth of your analysis is SV%.

I was really happy with the fact we gave up something like 8 shots early in the game to allow VV to get into the game. The announcers echoed those thoughts.

What I didn't like we're the breakdowns in the first where we allowed really great chances.

What you never seem to get with your game cards is that it only takes two or three shots early in the game to lose it. We've seen it all season and much the past five years where we give up breakaways and 2-on-1s and destroy the goalie's and team's confidence and change the other team's game plan.

We dominated the latter part of the game largely bc of VVs great play in the first and their hitting posts and missing the net.

Try a little harder to see what is actually going on in a game and understand it.

I'm torn on wanting first place to be honest, I could name like four or five seasons without even thinking where we won a division and lost in the first round (at least 1998, 1999, 2009, 2010) and a couple of those being the top seed in the East. On the other hand, it would be nice to avoid the Ranger headaches in the first round and get a theoretically easier matchup.

Nobody can deny the atmosphere will be lit tonight because of the teams' position in the standings though. That itself is worth savoring.
ranger headache or the strongest aphrodisiac there is.

Again I have to take the opportunity to point out the deficiency with citing HD statistics. How does it account for the degree of danger? That one chance that Carolina had where the player was able to fire off a one-timer in the slot about five feet from Vitek with no devils player within ten feet of him was more dangerous than any chance the devils got the whole night.

Also what were the stats on odd man rushes? I recall two or three in succession from the canes early on. I don’t recall the devils getting that many for the whole game, but I could be wrong.
"These are the facts, if you don't understand them that's on you, but you can't deny facts"

With that out of the way, your concern is correct. It's a great tool to gauge how a game went mostly, but there def is holes in it. At the end of the day these "facts" are based off parameters someone made up. They didn't fall down from the heavens like some would have you believe. Someone decided, a shot from here is HD, a shot from here is not.

Anyone else could also make one and change the parameters to take out any shot that was from the back hand, or give higher weight to off wing, blocker side vs glove, screened, Mcleod vs Timo, or any number of things and the models would be completely different.

So yea, fine for giving an overall view, but also fine to say, uhh don't think it was 100% accurate this game.

so basically you just expect every game to be a perfect defensive effort. if thats your perception on "understanding" the game, then I don't know what to tell you...especially in this day and age in the NHL where offense is up across the board.

Again, the Devils played one of their best defensive games of the season on Sunday night. And thats WITHOUT the goalie. Carolina did legitimately nothing for like 2/3 of the game. They had 6 high-danger chances TOTAL. It was a smothering effort.

I have my own opinions on goalies lol. I rarely try to judge or call out "stoppable." I know people have their strong opinions on that, but goalies and goals against them are a entire thing I want nothing to do with. Short of some obvious puck misplay or glaring positional mistake, I try not to care too much.

Classic. Bookmarked. Shows what you know.

Without just one of those big saves early on the Devils are playing a much different game than the shutdown strangling defense we played in the second and third and we may lose.

Not even debatable. You seem to think that hockey games consist of unrelated events and momentum plays no part while simultaneously bemoaning the lack of a big save at critical times.

You got the frigging big save, in fact multiple, and the game you saw including the very good defense later was a direct result of that.

Your hdsc counting has been goofy all season and has been proven to almost be a predictor of the Opposite result.

Hm, no Bastian on the ice today and Lazar in place there.

Smith back rotating in for Bahl as of now too.

Also all 3 goalies are on the ice.

I assume Bastian is injured, because otherwise him coming out for Lazar instead of Wood is insane.

Edit: You posted the update that he is injured right before I commented. Good timing.

I don't think enough has been said about how we somehow managed to keep the best power forward in the NHL, Josh Anderson, off the scoresheet last night. :sarcasm:
this belongs on the mainboard

I think Hischier's line or the third line can be labeled as matchup lines. Both are defensively responsible and get after it on the forecheck

newly registered i see.

but you are aware that hischier is our 3c?

I have literally no idea what youre talking about, as usual. Where did I even say that? I even SAID, earlier in the argument, that Vanecek made some good saves early.

FACT- the Devils played one of their best games defensively of the season on Sunday night. The eye test confirms that, the counting stats confirm that, the advanced stats confirm that. The end.

Have a great day.

Doubt very much this is true, that was a dangerous chance but the pass was telegraphed and the player was angled in such a way that Vitek could get out to challenge him. It's definitely a dangerous chance, but it's not some open net opportunity.

If this is the best chance a team gives up in a game, or they give up only one like this, they are doing well. Carolina gave up a lot of dangerous chances on their PP, they had Hughes walking right in on a semi-breakaway, etc.
Telegraphed? It was a bang-bang play off an unexpected turnover. Sure, Vitek read it well but that's a credit to him, not a knock on the chance itself. In other words, the goalie bailed them out. But how often you expect the goalie to bail out the team on a play like that is the question. I don't know how you can downplay the danger of that chance.

As far as the last sentence...I never said Carolina wasn't giving up dangerous chances. I just don't know that the chances they did give up were as dangerous as the one I cited. Also, not sure why you are bringing up PP chances...I'd think you of all people would know those should be judged a bit differently than ES.

It's uh, literally from your post. You can read it above, right? Yeah you clearly have a difficult time understanding that goalies making stops on quality chances early and keeping the score 0-0 is better than falling behind 2-0, and that later gameplay and chances are impacted.

Cool that typing 'FACT:' is supposed to lend credence to your argument.

And yeah, both things can be true- we can put in our best defensive effort yet still be bailed out by the third star of the game goalie bc the breakdowns we had early and resultant saves were the difference in the game.

If Kolchetkov keeps his stick down on two shots, we could have easily lost that game.

Lolz

Is Sharangovich still alive? I haven't seen any mention of him skating as an extra or anything since he came out of the lineup. Not that I think he should draw in over anyone aside from maybe Wood, but it's just weird that it seems like he disappeared completely.
