Devils team discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part IV

literally every one of those players is better than McLeod

Nic Roy plays ~4 minutes/game more than McLeod....he is not strictly a 4th liner. He also didnt sign for 6 years
Calle Jarnkrok has hit 30 points like 6 times in his career, and while in Nashville played 16+ minutes per game. I'd be stunned if McLeod ever gets there once.
Colton Sissons, again, plays 15-16 minutes a night. He is not a 4th liner
Stephenson I wont even dignify tbh
Sissons was 9th amongst Nashville fwds when he signed his deal. Certainly not an essential player. He signed a 7 year deal worth $2.8 per.

I'm talking years later signing a lesser player to a 6 year deal to $2m per.

Math adds up.

I'm amazed that anybody could think that McLeod's offense is going to trend up. It's not.

He is what he is at this point, and that's not very good. He might be solid defensively and useful for killing penalties, but expecting any offense from him is unrealistic. We can do better.
How is his offense not trending up?

Look at his #'s.

thank you.

And thats before even getting into the potential Hockey Canada stuff.

you never know with you

you did literally just suggest trading 3 premiere assets for 35 year old Patrick Kane and giving him a 4 year contract, so.
Can you show me where I suggested it? I can't find it!
I can show you where I said if this hypothetically happened what would the reaction be

Six of these players were placed on waivers this season, one of these players is Michael McLeod. Can you tell who is who?

Player A:
0 points
45.24 CF%
47.00 xGF%

Player B:
0.41 points/game
48.47 CF%
47.64 xGF%

Player C:
0.30 points/game
55.23 CF%
56.75 xGF%

Player D:
0.48 points/game
48.65 CF%
47.48 xGF%

Player E:
0.35 points/game
46.79 CF%
46.16 xGF%

Player F:
0.29 points/game
57.32 CF%
54.23 xGF%

Player G:
0.24 points/game
54.40 CF%
52.14 xGF%

Because to me, this looks like a pile of interchangeable garbage.

Player A is Kiefer Bellows
Player B is Michael McLeod
Player C is Michael Eyssimont
Player D is Eeli Tolvanen
Player E is Tyson Jost
Player F is Rudolfs Balcers
Player G is Nicolas Aube-Kubel
Zero context as per usage. Not even minutes played?

Heck I'd think the 54 xGF% would have the player card crew drooling.

Man, I kind of wish they went with the Ruff stat.

Ruff will now be a board favorite.

McLeod has like 8 or 9 secondary assists at even strength this year (second on the team last I checked), which is artificially inflating his point totals. He isn't doing anything drastically different from the rest of his career and I would not agree that his offense is "trending up". Hes still the same guy he has always been.

hes 12 among NJ forwards in ixG/60, 11th in iCF/60, and 13th in iHDCF/60

He's 24 years old, doesn't miss games, plays difficult assignments, is seeing his offensive production trend upward.

You sign him to a longer deal, and you solidify a bottom six center spot just as we enter our contention window. $2mil per and that is an absolute bargain towards the end of the contract.

What are they saying?

This is just one poster, of course, and I do not mean to put words in anybody else's mouth. But this is what I was responding to.

McLeod's offensive numbers are trending upward, in the same way that my son's chances of attending Harvard are trending upward now that he has mastered walking. Technically true, but so far away from what is actually needed as to be meaningless.

So what would be your reaction if the Devils announced a 6 year, $1.75 million per season extension for McLeod?

Well I don't know how old your son is, but I still haven't mastered walking, so maybe have a little more faith in him.

like right now? I would not be very happy.

What would your reaction be if they did that, and then it comes out later this year that he was involved in that Hockey Canada sexual assault?

McLeod is having his best year this year, but I agree I see no reason to o lock McLeod down. What kind of savings will you really see by committing to 6 years instead of 2?

Could see him getting ~3.5 million from some idiot team when he hits UFA in 2/3 years. So if he signs for 1.75 million per season, that's half the market value.

I would like to have some clarity on his legal situation

This is assuming everything is cleared in this case.

My reaction is that deal is not realistic and therefore not happening. Unless he’s dodging Hockey Canada stuff I don’t see it, players don’t sign long deals that cheap.

How did this suddenly get below 2m when you were saying 2n before?

But that would mean the only savings would come from a hypothetical team overpaying him in UFA. Still doesn’t show any value to the devils, that would just help protect some other team out there for over spending on him sometime in the next 6 years. Why not just go for 2 years and then let him walk? Who are 4th line centre is 2-3 years from now really shouldn’t matter right now. Devils could be in a position in 2 years where veteran guys are willing to take a huge discount to play low minutes in our bottom 6 to be apart of a competitive team.

Nico leads the team in es secondary assists.

Are we using the "artificially inflating point totals" with Nico, or does that just go for bottom 6 guys?

Can you please show me where I said 2 million?

I can’t find where this started, if you didn’t say 2m, did you say “under 2m” originally or something?

I don’t care enough to find it, the thread is a mess and I don’t have the energy for it.

Others said 2 million. I quoted one of those messages and said I think if Fitz offers 6 years of security, he could potentially get McLeod locked up in the 1.7-2 million range
