do we know if he is a member of this board?
I think he’s a lurker. Could even be a poster.

I have no proof of this, but I’ve run into him the last two times I’ve seen games in Sunrise against the Panthers. Both last March and our game there in January. I feel like he somehow sat in the same section as me both times, which wasn’t even the same section either time.

When I first got up to the building last time I started posting about how he was out there talking nonstop to some dude, who I’m sure he didn’t even know.

It was after one of the intermissions that I walked up the steps of the concourse to use the restroom and he was getting out of one of the rows on my way up. I let him out to get in front of me and he gave me a dirty look and didn’t even say thank you or nod or anything.

While he seems to be an asshole, he also acts friendly to most of the people who engage him, but he didn’t act that way to me.

So it’s my personal theory that he lurks the forum and read my posts about him a couple of hours before that. He no doubt saw me standing behind him outside at the time I made the posts about him. If he did indeed wind up reading them later.

Fitz played this goalie market brilliantly.

What was once a spot full of teams desperate for goaltending has turned around. Skinner solved EDM's problems, Kochetkov has been incredible for CAR, even Samsonov has been awesome since his return.

Now you have Saros, Allen, Markstrom, Kahkonen etc all available with very few suitors out there. Even for us, with Daws recent good play it hasnt been as much of a NEED although Id still like to get one.

Needless to say, the market has dried up lately thus probably lowering prices around the board.

Really seems like the teams looking to move goalies have overplayed their hands so far. Maybe the TDL causes more buyer panic, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Seems like fitz called conroy’s bluff and now the devils are the only ones left standing in the market

I don’t think they should acquire a goalie tho tbh

I’m sure the play of daws is being used a negotiation chip as well.
If Fitz will trade for Markstrom, but will save Casey, Mercer(ofcourse he should save him), Sasha Holtzin, Gritsyuk and Lenny, I will be happy and proud for our GM.

They all did, thinking EDM, CAR, TOR would NEED a goalie and now the market has seemingly completely dried up

Now you have like 6 goalies available and we might the only team truly in the market for one.

EDM have Skinner,
TOR have Samsonov, Jones playing well and Woll returning soon
CAR have Kochetkov with a .920 since December.
LAK have Talbot as an All star
COL have Georgiev as an All Star
BOS / NYI / NYR / FLA / VGK / WPG / TB / DAL / VAN/ MIN / STL have zero need for a goalie.

So who exactly needs a goalie right now? That is in a playoff spot / playoff race

Conroy specifically sounds like he’s been trying to play hardball:

And if we are to believe the Flames fan “insider” rumors have any semblance of validity, Conroy apparently has wanted Mercer in a deal for Markstrom alone. Which is absolute insanity.

Fitz will just say no and wait it out a while longer. Parting with Holtz for Markstrom alone is a bit rich as well.

The Athletic's take on what a deal for Markstrom might look like...

New Jersey Devils

The perfect fit: Jacob Markström

The trade: Markström (25 percent retained) for Alexander Holtz, 2025 second-round pick

There’s no secret when it comes to the Devils’ biggest need. They’re a deep, highly skilled team that came into the season as a potential Stanley Cup contender. Their campaign hasn’t gone nearly as planned, though, and while some of that can be traced to missed time by their stars, the most fixable issue is in goal, where New Jersey’s team save percentage was just .894 entering the weekend.

The Devils aren’t a slam-dunk playoff team at this point, so on one hand, making an aggressive buy this season might look a bit out of place compared to some of the other teams on this list. But they’re still firmly in the mix, and after getting Jack Hughes back up front, the right addition in goal could still spark a real run.

Markström stands out as that fit for multiple reasons. The most important is that he’s rock solid, putting together yet another strong season in Calgary. He’s a goalie who’s shown he can thrive on a high-octane team that likes to trade chances, and New Jersey associate coach Travis Green will be able to attest to that. Markström had two top-10 Vezina finishes playing for Green in Vancouver in 2018-19 and 2019-20 and played for him at AHL Utica as well.

Crucially, too, Markström is signed for two more years beyond this season, which is key given the Devils’ bubble status for this postseason. The idea would of course be that Markström pays immediate dividends for the Devils, but New Jersey wouldn’t be putting all their chips on just 2024. Those extra two years are especially important considering Nico Hischier’s contract — which carries a bargain $7.25 million cap hit — runs through 2027. Having Markström through 2026 helps to solidify the crease during the window in which the Devils have both of their star No. 1 picks (Hischier and Hughes) locked up at a combined $15.25 million. And with an uninspiring 2024 free-agent class, the Devils would be rolling the dice by waiting for the summer to try and fill that hole another way.

LeBrun wrote recently that the two teams had disagreed over salary retention and its associated costs for a potential Markström deal, but for a Devils team that has some big tickets already on the books, plus other young players they’ll need to pay in the coming years, it’s an obstacle worth navigating — even if it means paying a significant price.

And make no mistake, this price, which features Holtz and a second-rounder would be significant. But with the right amount of retention (we settled on 25 percent, taking Markström’s cap hit down to $4.5 million) that price is worth paying.

There aren’t many natural comparable trades for top-level goalies with term moving at the deadline, but a useful frame of reference is the Colorado Avalanche trading a first-round pick and defense prospect Conor Timmins to the Arizona Coyotes for Darcy Kuemper at $1 million retained in the summer of 2021 (Arizona also received a conditional third-round pick since Colorado won the Stanley Cup). Holtz has emerged as a middle-six scorer, and was a top-10 pick in 2020 — he’d be akin to a first-rounder in this proposal. He can also help an NHL lineup right away, which should be a bonus to the retooling Flames. The second-round pick would be roughly equivalent to Timmins’ value at the time as a prospect. Markström has more term left than Kuemper did which would be attractive for the Devils, but given that he’s 34, it also comes with downside risk. That’s why we didn’t add to the proposal beyond what we already have.

It’s a lot of moving parts, to be sure. But the ingredients are there for New Jersey to pull off a deadline blockbuster for the second straight year.

If you can get Khakonen or Allen or someone as insurance for picks, I'm all for that. but I'm kind of ok with sitting out the big moves cycle this time. We were in and got the big fish with Dougie, then we were in on Gaudreau and likely dodged a bullet there, then we were in on Meier and won, we traded more long term pieces for short term pieces in the offseason. Just from a resource management perspective it may be best to hold off on yet another huge move until the offseason.

This is my ideal scenario as well.

Give me Kahkonen, a forward, and a depth Dman for middle round picks and improve depth. If we go on a run, great. If we dont, lets keep the top picks and use them in the offseason.

I still think Henrique would be ideal for us. Not sure if I want to pay the price BUT he replaces the Haula C/LW spot with Hughes by Henrique who is much better offensively IMO.

The other day I was just thinking of howuch not fun it’s going to be when Hischier’s contract is close to expiring. Hischier definitely gives off a “lifer” vibe, but I still am not looking forward to the anxiety of waiting for an extension

Honestly not too worried about that one. We went through the Bratt ordeal, we can endure this one for sure!

But in all seriousness, I expect pretty smooth negotiations with Nico.

I'd honestly even skip the depth D at this point. With Seigenthaler back we have a 1-7 of actual NHLers again, even if 2.5 of them are rookies. Give me another Lazar type depth forward with term on a cheap contract and the goalie, I'm happy with that and we save ammo to make a bigger trade next year when Luke and Nemec should be more prepared to make a run.
