reminder 4th line doesn't mean anything - i think they're trying to see if mercer can activate holtz

also, peep this photo lol

What kind of photo filter they used, they look f***ing smashed and all the red is coming out. LOL

Compared to this one:

Also, Captainn Nico on the side show, he lost the team already? Kiddin'
Palat sighting (i think), that is good.....

And Zetts, JFC what a face.

Wait a sec..

...You took.....a post of mine.....from DECEMBER 2ND....3 F'N WEEKS AGO.....

...and responding to that by whining about where we are in the standings NOW??

I know this streak really sucks but if you told me we’d be in first place on December 19 back in September I’d tell you to lay off that dog food.

The season not being over by new years is certainly a positive, but they gotta snap off out of this before the month ends. It’s not going to be like last year where there’s a clear gap between 8 and 9 in the East, there’s gonna be a few teams fighting for the WC spots. We’ve shown we’re a playoff team, I don’t think that’s really in jeropardy for now but there’s a long way to go and unless we close out this month strong there’s cause for concern.

My take is that it’s small things to fix, which is better than fundamental problems.

Save percentage tanked but GAA is only 0.15 higher. It’s goals for that have tanked

The goals early and late in the periods are killing us. We are not finishing strong. I suspect we are tired.

Bastian is a key player for reasons previously discussed. He makes that BMW line work - and I don’t consider it a fourth line. It’s a crash line! He also works on PP, and as others have said the BMW line means the other lines have right players in the right roles. Him out and Palat out means there’s a gap.

Power play has been poor all season. Some of us have pointed this out but it was easy to ignore on a 16-of-17 streak - now it’s a difference maker.

Other than that we don’t have solid forward depth in the AHL … we do have some good forward prospects but they’re not “liquid” assets. So we don’t have our interchangeable parts like we have had in the distant past to overcome this.

It’s disappointing this stretch coincides with absolutely torrid hockey from Carolina, rangers, Pittsburgh. Florida is also solid. It’s a great division! But all things wax and wane. I wanted a three game losing streak to test our resiliency… getting worried about a failure if this continues.

I’ll be at the game tomorrow!

I would be all for a callup of Foote & Thompson in place of Johnsson & Holtz to give it a whirl. I think Foote has looked decent in his short NHL stints, albeit underwhelming in the AHL - but some guys are like that. Would bring some heaviness at the very least. And Thompson could maybe give you some grit w/ the ability to make a play to a degree.

what the HELL is this

I don’t hate this. I wonder if they put Wood with Hischier for the Florida game just for some added protection. Probably would need a win in Carolina to feel comfortable enough doing that but:

Wood - Hischier - Zetterlund
Haula - Hughes - Bratt
Tatar - Mercer - Holtz
Sharangovich - McLeod - Boqvist

Some love from the times/the athletic, even though Goldman attempts to knock them down a notch and cant be bothered to mention L Hughes or Nemec:

Rank: 1

Second opinion:
I think the Devils’ score may be a bit high, and their current place in the standings has a lot to do with it. Coaching earns higher marks now because we’re seeing the difference a change in assistants can make. And the roster is good, with room to keep improving. The only question is cap, and that won’t be answered until Jesper Bratt is extended and Damon Severson is dealt with. — Shayna Goldman

she's hardly our beat writer. more reason to dislike the athletic as a devils fan

With the way the boys are adhering to the game plan night in and night out and the games being objectively close and worth watching until the final buzzer, I think it’ll just take just one night of good bounces and us scoring five for the confidence to be restored.

Save for some issues with the power play, this is NOT the fundamentally flawed hockey we’ve been watching for most of the last decade.

This. They were in every single game, even the only lopsided one which was against NYI.

listening to wood.....what happened with nico in the game?
He somewhat accidentally hurt Barkov by crosschecking his knee on a faceoff early in the game. The Panthers took every opportunity to pound him, slash him, and late hit him the rest of the way out. All borderline shit, nothing illegal, but we had no response until Smith tried to fight Ekblad.

It was really pretty terrible on our part. It was kinda a prelude of playoff hockey. It basically showed that we can be intimidated and cowed.

I don't think we needed to goon it up or fight, but we needed to respond by having our forwards be chippier, initiate physical play and be hard on the fore check, and probably have our defensemen respond by getting chippy with their best players.

The optics were bad. You never want to look like victims, ya know?

I can't help but feel like the loss of Bastian was massive, certainly larger than you'd expect for a "4th liner" given his PP time and the fact that the BMW line does play significant minutes. Once he came back from Seattle the PP got going last year too. After he went down the lines got all kind of got discombobulated and things never clicked again like during the streak.

No one seems to appreciate Bastian enough around here.
