There's a difference between "Hits like those common in the 90s are bad for the NHL" and "Stevens is a bad player for laying those hits" that I usually try to draw in discussions.

Because pretending stevens was a particularly dirty player for his era is hella revisionist, but I also hope we move to a league where dudes don't lose careers over concussions.

I do like how every response to that Tweet is calling him out on his garbage article. If you want to discuss his hitting and how the game was at the time regarding head trauma, fine. But to spend an entire article supposedly on the best players of all time basically tearing him down is ludicrous. Maybe they're desperate for Devils fans clicks since Masisak stopped covering us.

Semin, now that's a blast from the past. I remember some utterly deranged people (not on here) arguing that Semin was really good defensively because he was a puck possession and Corsi god. Never mind that he floated like driftwood and was clearly lost in his own zone.

The argument would have made more sense if they said he was a net positive for his team, but no, the narrative they went with was "good defensively". Totally bonkers.

At a quick glance, I don't see any mention of that for Toews - it's an overwhelming positive article for him.

Can't wait to see Patrick Roy's article - will surely be all about his domestic violence charges and the issue of domestic violence in general with athletes.
You think this is bad, just wait for Marty’s article on infidelity, his last messy season with the Devils + departure and how unfair it was he could play the puck so well so they changed the game. Not to mention THE TRAP and the debate whether he was overrated

I still find it hilarious that the stupid trapezoid is still in the game this many years after Brodeur retired. I'm not aware of any goalies in the league currently who play the puck as well as he did, so basically it has no real purpose anymore, and it's still there just due to inertia.

It's also amusing to me when people call it the "Marty rule" to include Turco, as if he was equally part of the reason for the rule.

I have a lingering feeling that we should at least prepare for Bratt's name to be on that list. I think he's going to Chucky us and aim for the open market, forcing Fitz's hand. People keep smack talking his agent, but the agent does what the player wants. Every negotiation with this player has been a chore, suggesting that no matter what he brings on the ice and in the locker room, he's going to get (what he considers) his due. We could easily end up with a Makar/MacKinnon situation where the best paid player on the team is far from the best player on the team (in fairness, we're already there with Hamilton/Hughes, but Bratt would likely eclipse Dougie too if he gets what he reportedly wants).

I generally have a bad feeling about our FA situation next summer. Of the UFAs, Tatar, Johnsson and Bernier should all be gone, no questions asked. Haula and Graves I could see Fitz working out deals for, both being his trade aquisitions and core system players in our current team.

Severson is tricky. He'll want term, and even if he's taken a dive to 3rd pairing D, and he'll want UFA RHD money (see also Pulock, Weegar). Someone's going to give him that. Similarly, Wood is playing his way into a 5x5 deal from some Du(m)bas(s), and there is no way in hell we should be giving that man five million American dollars per year, least of all for several years.

And then there's the heap of RFAs. Bratt, see above. I hope I'm wrong, but everything I see, read and hear tells me otherwise. Bratt is gonna Zach on us. Blackwood should be let go and not qualified. Trade his rights to Alberta for a fifth. Rango, Zetterlund and Bahl are no-brainers in my world, all should be renewed, especially the forwards. Bahl should remain as Severson/Smith insurance, unless he's expecting a huge deal.

That leaves Boqvist, Bastian and McLeod, and this is where the tough conversations begin. If Wood is gone, how much is left of the dynamic of the BMW line? Can we count on McLeod long term (looking at you, Hockey Canada)? How many of them are trade bait or part of the Bratt package for Meier (boom, there it is)? I can easily see the third and fourth line being 3 to 5 players changed next season.

I think this team is going to look radically different next season. So far, Fitz has given me zero reason not to trust him, and the summer after next we only have Mercer and Schmid coming up, so we're pretty set to make long term moves.

There it is, my FA predictions. Save for future humiliation/praise.
TLDR version :

The Sky is falling.

f*** The Athletic and their paywall - this is complete garbage anyway, but if anyone wants to read the hit job on Stevens here you go (I'm still fuming after reading this):
"Sean Fitz-Gerald"?

Yeah...that name isn't fake.

I'm sure someone called Shawn Avary will type THAT one up. :sarcasm:

(bet he'll mention his weight, too)

So my man...I dont think Boeser is the answer either....He wouldve been a throw in for his recent struggles and distain for his team. Horvat is the main piece and Horvat is a finisher for a center. Hughes just needs to shoot more on the PP.

Im thinking how do we keep this team competitive long term. Boeser is signed to a relatively cheap contract for a number of years and only 25. Lets not forget...Has more career goals than Hischer and Bratt. Dude been consistent putting up at least 20+ on bad teams. I wouldnt totally write him off like you are.

Bratt is demanding more than Hughes and Hishcer. That is just whats going to happen. I really only looked at those two since they are the only names available. I really dont wanna be the Leafs that have these FWDs signed long term to big deals and cant even afford bottom 6 guys.

If I had my pick, Id be going after O'reilly and Senko for rentals. Real winners on the team with Palat. Teams PP is garbage since their isnt a shoot first mentality. We get our chances, but we are making that one extra pass.

If we can't sign Bratt by deadline, Id ship him out. Unless Hughes starts winning faceoffs, we need a true 2nd line center that would be willing to play wing. He would just be taking faceoffs. I like Haula A LOT...but not the answer long term.

Team has too many assets. Yes, you can never have enough depth. But, it doesnt mean we arent wasting value there. We still have holes that need to be identified..sometimes its not better to wait to answer them.

Who gives a shit if Bratt is demanding more than Hischier and Hughes?

Hischier was signed FOUR years before Bratt’s next deal. It began three years prior, but it will have been 4 years since the signing.

Hughes contract is looking like a real bargain right now.

What are we rolling back the clock to 2012 or 2013 with some of these bizarro ideas about how no one should be paid more than this or that player?

This is like when there was an argument about 10 years ago that we can’t sign a player to a cap hit higher than Kovalchuk’s because they just won’t give a cap hit higher than that. Or that Parise will have a higher cap hit than Kovalchuk, so he shouldn’t be retained because Kovalchuk is better.

Or how we couldn’t upgrade the center position because this guy will be paid more than Zajac and we just can’t have that lol.

they can easily afford Meier and still pay Bratt. And Meier is going to get more than $8.

We have a truckload of money coming of the books this summer, with a lot of it being on non-essential players. As an example, Johnsson + Bernier combined make $7.5 million. Just those 2 plus the cap going up is more than enough for Meier right there. Thats before ANY other moves.
and we have a truck load of roster players to replace with that.

the cap raising means the contract prices will raise accordingly. agents and players won't sign off comparable dollar deals. they want comparable cap percentages.

It's more a long term issue. Mercer appears to be on his way to earning a nice payday and presumably you will have to pay Nemec and Hughes at some point. All that aside, it would potentially work but it would probably be the last significant move they could make to add outside talent at a market rate. A third line of Meier Hischier and Bratt sounds pretty good.
the cap will raise. but you can't pay your third line 22+ million.
