I’m sure this will get a lot of we don’t want him. But you think if devils had this type of year (so far) last year would Johnny g have signed here?

A realistic mock trade for Meier could look like this in my opinion:

Alex Holtz
Nolan Foote
2024 2nd round pick
Jonathan Bernier OR Andreas Johnsson (cap)

Then this is a mock lineup of your healthy team for playoffs.

Meier - Hughes - Mercer
Palat - Hischier - Bratt
Sharangovich - Haula - Tatar
Wood - McLeod - Zetterlund
Bastian, Boqvist

Siegenthaler - Hamilton
Graves - Marino
Smith - Severson
L. Hughes, Bahl, Okhotiuk, Depth Dman acquisition

Vanecek
Blackwood
Schmid

Hughes-Haula-Meier
Palat-Hischier-Bratt
Tatar-Boqvist-Mercer
Z/BMW

I don't know what the Sharks want. I omitted Sharangovich as he could be a trade piece (along with our 1st pick+ or Holtz)...unfortunately. Again, don't know the value. SJ doesn't need to trade him now.

Boqvist needs to be playing. Not enough guys on the team can skate the center position like Boq, especially if Hischier/Hughes go down in game. Mercer should start lower.

As @Unknown Caller mentioned previously - we shouldn't be viewing this season as "playing with house money"

We're about to lose potentially two huge pieces of our defense core in Severson and Graves. Hischier is 23, Bratt is 24. Hughes is 21, Dougie is 29, Palat is 31 .... Let's freakin go for the cup this year.

Now that doesn't mean give up 1st round picks and high end prospects for a rental, but if you can add a youngish player that will remain with the team for years, do it! If you can add Timo Meier at the right pirce, do it!

Let's aim for the Stanley Cup THIS YEAR.

Sending Johnsson and his 3.4 million cap hit but only 750K Salary the other way in any potential trade would be enough to facilitate the trade. We also have Bernier to send.

We have plenty of flexibilty to do pretty much whatever we want at the deadline.
It’s a bit of a stretch to call our #4 and #5 defensemen huge pieces, and going for it usually means trading first rounders or big prospects, it’s not trading a second day draft pick for a rental middle six player

Never heard this one.
Rumored Gomez trade. We also around the same era had a rumored Gomez for Datsyuk trade. Interesting hypotheticals.

I'm still not ready to go that far yet. Would've been a damn good team with Gaudreau here as well, but all the success this season has most certainly eased the sting of just missing out on him.
Yeah but having him on our books in a year or two would have made things very difficult.

Gomez was scratched the night of the trade deadline too, adding fuel to the rumors of a potentially still unannounced deal lol

I remembered it was Gomez and a defenseman for Selanne and Damphousse but had forgotten who the defenseman was lol

Cap wise we can't.
Assuming Bernier stays on LTIR for season, Mango and Schmid is sent down to Utica when Palat and Blackwood is back, this team will have approx $3.8m cap space to add players. They can open up more cap space by trading Mango as he has a $2.2m buried penalty against NJ cap when he is in the minors.

If Mango is traded as part of a deal for Timo Meier (50% retained) and Holtz, the cap space remaining would be $3.9m.

$3.8m + $2.2m (Mango) + $0.9m Holtz - $3m (Meier) = $3.9m

This is enough room for a cheap depth defenseman like Kulikov.

Even more cap space could be opened up by Fitz if he moves Tatar or Blackwood.

The Patrick Kane trade is doable at 50% retained if Mango and Blackwood are part of the deal. Chicago definitely needs a goalie, so I think they take Blackwood.

Do you know what's really funny about this? I don't know if I pointed it out or not. Since I've only even known about it for 3 years now.

When Gomer did the first podcast that he was on with spittin chiclets, he talked about kissing Jamie Langenbrunner on the kiss cam at Nassau Coliseum, and how Lou was steaming mad after this. And how everybody knew even before they got on the team bus that Lou was irate over this and everybody was giggling at Gomer.

It just so happens that the game that the kiss cam incident happened was the game right before the Atlanta game that Gomer was scratched for right before the 2003 trade deadline.

And I forget exactly how I did the math on this, but I'm pretty sure it was that game. I think it was because he went on to say he was benched (his icetime was 12:55 in that game, which was very low for him) and the team was barely hanging on in that game and he was on the bench going crazy cheering everyone on so Lou wouldn't be as mad about it. And I thought he mentioned the relief after the empty net goal and Nieuwendyk scored into the empty net that game.

Then again, maybe it was the game like 10 days earlier which was also at Nassau and ended in a 3-3 tie.

I thought maybe he mentioned it was an afternoon game? I had to look it up and the March 8th game fell on a Saturday in 2003. The February 27th game fell on a Thursday and there wouldn't have been a matinee game that day.

Not sure how accurate all these rumors are, but that's funny to see that Lou supposedly almost traded for Miroslav Satan. We'd still be seeing those jerseys in the arena to this day if that happened.

Makes me want to puke at the thought of almost trading for Messier instead of Mogilny in 2000.

I remember a very heavy one was Arnott for Lecavalier.

Arnott was traded later that season, but not for Lecavalier, rather Langenbrunner and Nieuwendyk,

Nieuwendyk is one of my most unfavorite ''Legendary'' or ''Great'' Devils ever. I definitely couldn't stand Steve Thomas, but I wouldn't call him legendary at all. Whereas Nieuwendyk is in the HOF.

I don't know if we just misused him or if our game stifled his offense (Gomez and Elias had down years offensively that year too) that year. He was older, but he seemed to come back and produce well the very next year in Toronto.

But he had a lot of weird goal droughts (not like McLeod levels or anything) that year and then he'd have these 2 goal games to make up for it. Elias had some whacky goal droughts that year too, unless I'm remembering wrong?

The simple answer here is that the Devils' power play was absolute dogshit in 2003. It converted at less than 12%, and Nieuwendyk had 7 points on it - he'd have 20 PP points in each of his final two seasons.

I'm going to be at the Devils game tomorrow night if any of you yokels are going to be there. I'm going with one of my best friends who is a huge Islanders fan, so it should be extra fun.

I was considering going to the game against the Rangers on 1/7 with my father in law, brother in law (both Rangers fans), and brother (Devils fan). But then I just looked at the ticket prices, and holy shit no thanks.

again, they have the room for both. Quite easily. Even if its not Meier, someone of that ilk/cost.
maybe in the short term, not sure about the long term. i’d prefer the cap flexibility to be honest, and i don’t want to tie up nearly $20M in 2 wingers for the next 7 years. i’d rather just hang onto wood for example, since he brings unique and desperately needed characteristics for less money. and it’s not like we have to give up assets to get him. stay. the. course.

The past Chicago game reminded me of the dark days Devils.

Chicago had a few scattered times of pressure that Vanacek held. Devils net 3 to give them the lead. Chicago quits playing after the second period, Devils are able to put out the bottom of the lineup and rest their stars during a painfully boring 3rd period.

That is what players talk about as an easy game/opponent. Exactly how those 2015-2017 teams felt like when down going into the 3rd period.

Let’s not forget fitz was gonna throw roughly 9.75 contract at Johnny G which indicates he was ready to add another big contract on top of palat and Bratt

He could absolutely fit Meir into the future plans if he wants

If Lou traded for Messier… I… let’s just say I would have taken it badly. And instead of treasure like Mogilny too.
