What were some of the positive you guys took away from last season? This years Sabres team is getting compared to 21 devils team. We are 2nd in the league in scoring but cant get saves at all right now. Its cool to see you guys turn the corner with the young talent you have.

Can’t get saves now is a big problem, once your goalie prospects arrive things will get better. A good UFA goalie signing that works out will help (trust us when I say we know that’s harder than it looks more than most NHL fanbases).

We learned the defensive core is important. A number of teams have young talent but their defensive core is a mess or just not there yet.

Our top 4 is probably underrated because it’s a UFA signing and three traded players but Hamilton is elite offensively and three others guys were great pick-ups.

Siegenthaler is amazing and Marino has been pretty great already even though our system is tough on new defensemen. Board whipping boy Graves does a fine job on our shutdown pair. Our former big minute 1D, Severson is currently on an excellent 3rd pair.

The bane of my existence, Brendan Smith, is a solid 6th defenseman when compared to what the rest of league has. (He makes a fantastic 7th defenseman too.)

The Sabres defense has a dominant Dahlin and an incredible rookie performance by Power, and some other stuff. The right veteran/talent mix isn’t there.

It’s far from an insurmountable problem with the base of the 1OAs to build on, the pile of assets Buffalo sits on and plus you still have cap flexibility. Fitz gives a good model of going after cost effect younger defensemen if you know how to target players who will work in your system.

To me one mistake is to go the “solid veteran” route, there’s a weird mystique around the value of intangibles there. You want value and talent, just pluck the right RFA from a cap strapped team. (You being the Sabres GM, but you know what I mean.)

They kind of remind me of last year's Devils and the goalie situation.

Normally I would torch the coaching staff for neglecting to play the better goalie and giving more rope to one guy because he's ''Their guy'' or has potential or whatever, but I can kind of understand why they aren't leaning on Craig Anderson more. He's been good, but I also wouldn't expect him to be so good if they start playing him more and giving him the starters workload, because Craig Anderson has been a POOR goalie for 5 years now. So no doubt if he starts playing more, I'd fully expect him to be down there at or below .900%, just as he's been the last 5 years. Especially considering that this is literally the oldest player in the league this year and the only player in their 40's that has yet to play a game in the NHL this year.

I am not sure what to think about possibly trading Holtz for a finisher. Having Holtz on a ELC and under team control will be huge moving forward. But… I’m not sure if he can be the player we need him to be . Tradig him (plus + ?) for Meier “could “ be an awesome addition but we lose any roster flexibility we would have if we just kept Hotlz .
Its a question of if Holtz can keep up with the style of play we need him to play, and finish at a rate we would like him to.

Bratter hangs out in Lavalette in the summer. Saw him twice this year. I think he stays. He has a great thing going here and is close with the guys.

That's cool. Where exactly did you see him? On the beach? One of the restaurants?
Walking past Crabs Claw. Granted, I was plastered that day, but knew it when I saw him. Then the next day someone posted his story of him in Lavalette with his gf.

Meier isn't a finisher, he's a bulk shooter. I like Meier but I wouldn't trade for him.

What doesn’t remind you of the New Jersey Devils “goalie situation” these days though?

We barely even have room for a forward when (if) we get a fully healthy group. There are very few, if any, guys that check all the boxes (the type of player we want, right age, right contract status, reasonable price, actually available, etc.). I can’t think of anyone.

35 goals last year is good for a "bulk shooter"
What a really weird thing to dude.

Meier is exactly what this team needs.
When people are saying the team needs a sniper they’re normally not talking about a guy who shoots under 10% for his career.

I’m good with bulk shooters, I think pure volume has value, but I wouldn’t call them snipers.

So I think it was a semantic discussion, not a knock on the player.

I don't think he's what the team needs. Meier is a below-average finisher, he makes up for that by taking lots and lots of shots. He is great at generating shots on goal. The thing is, the Devils are already great at getting shots on goal. He's not what I would call a finisher and I am always concerned about this sort of player long-term; do they just start throwing up more and more low-percentage shots as they can't find the slot as much. I'd take him on the team, but I would not trade significant assets for him.

Peak Dano memes was during the lowly 20-22 times though ;)

It’s true, it’s what sustained us, a fire barrel for the soul.

Devils sent out a survey today, just doing my part...

Sometimes I complete surveys only out of professional courtesy for the market researcher on the other end who has to work with the responses.

This would not be one of those times. Why even ask that question? There's no way they are going to get meaningful responses.

Anybody who says that sponsors add to the experience is straight trolling.
