Maybe he thinks that losing Huberdeau will cripple them more than adding Tkachuk helps? Definitely a strange take.
His take on the Senators is even stranger. As much as they've improved, I don't think Ottawa is making the playoffs yet, and they certainly won't be ahead of the Panthers.
I think the Panthers will make the playoffs, but here is what I think could cause them to miss the playoffs if they do.
Bobrovsky overachieved last year relative to what he is in 2022 at now 34 years old. It was a step up from his two years before that. His first two years in Florida were bad, but I think we all knew this was going to become one of the worst contracts in the league pretty early on.
Spencer Knight was just okay. Nothing great, but not bad. Just breaking even. He probably shouldn't have been rushed to the NHL so early. If he's ready to take over the brunt of games and do a good job while taking over them, I think they'll be just fine in the case of a Bobrovsky regression. And he was rushed to the NHL because he kind of had to be. The Panthers need a CHEAP goalie because of the Bobrovsky contract. So it's either Spencer Knight or some career AHL jabroni like Charlie Lindgren, who the Caps just had to sign to be the backup for 3 years because they're capped out.
With how much they scored last year, they could have gotten the Bobrovsky of the two years before that and still quite easily made the playoffs by quite a bit, but they wouldn't have won the Presidents Trophy or division.
