Ya if the Helle ship has sailed , I’d like to kick the tires on getting Backlund from the Flame at 50% retention.
Or maybe someone like ummm Toews at league minimum ?

I think Toews is probably going to retire. And we have enough centers, even more so now after signing Nosek.

With the depth guys we already have on the NHL roster, and a few guys battling for a spot in camp, we should be set at forward.

Love this signing. I understand a lot of people have Foote/Holtz penciled in for a slot in the lineup but I'd like to still have the depth to give them some competition and really put pressure on them to show up and perform well. I don't really get the Foote hype based on everything I have seen from him, so I'm happy we have improved our depth a bit. It seems like we have 15 forwards right now, so we will probably have to send a guy through waivers, hopefully Tierney (as I don't think we want to waive Foote assuming he's waiver eligible), as I think he would be the best guy for the forward group in the AHL if he makes it through.

I really like Nosek, he's a great 4th line guy and very solid defensively. He can play LW with McLeod & Bastian or potentially be our McLeod replacement depending on the outcome of the hockey Canada investigation.

This is the big thing for me. Why did this organization hate Bo so much? He's better than the guys we signed to replace him and cheaper...
I don’t think he was disliked by the organization. Nosek is a special teams contributor and fits the 4th line mold better than Bo. Plus Boqvist might not have wanted to come back because his chance at a top 9 role was very slim.

It’s hard to get a cheaper solid NHL contributor than 1 year 1 million.

15 fwds, counting Tierney not counting Foote
Definitely another log jam at forward now. But Nosek is very tough and with the moves Fitz is making we are becoming a heavier team and a better defensive and forechecking team too. The penalty kill is also improved.

Our roster is better constructed up front to take on the islanders and Carolina than last year. But our defense will still have to turn and break forecheck pressure and a lot will depend on Luke. Plus we don’t have a lot of depth on D should there be an injury.

Nice add. More pressure on young players, more depth and center depth, may be even more FO guys(Nico, Nosek and McLeod could take face offs on different lines potentiall). Very important thing on the big picture.
That’s interesting how Fitz overthinked some part of his understand of building the winning team. Will be interesting to see how he will have new future feedback and how he will react and rethink on it too.

I think we're gonna have a ton of forwards at training camp, see what sticks, and waiver guys as necessary. If our extra dudes are all making 1M, that's risk-free.

I'd rather have too many 4th line options than risk running out some bad ones. Bad 4th liners can stealthily kill teams, which is why the Ryan Reaves signing in Toronto is so egregious.

Fitz is clearly looking to build a more well rounded team. That some people think we can just slot finesse speedsters into any spot in the lineup with no regard for anything else and take the next step is foolish. This isn’t EA sports, you need a team that is multi-dimensional to be a true contender.

1 Timo
2 Jack
3 Nico
4 Jesper
5 Ondrej
6 Tyler
7 Erik
8 Michael
9 Nathan
10 Dawson

11 Lazar
12 Nosek
13 Tierney

If you are going to get to the 15 everyone is talking about they must be in this group:
Foote
Holtz
Clarke
That means only 1 of the 'kids" stays. Holtz and Clarke aren't eligible. That place Foote on the roster unless they figure he is expendable if claimed.

Lazar, Nosek, and Tierney are basically NHL players.
Tierney has played 22 AHL games in the last 8 years.
Nosek hasn't played an AHL game in the last 6 seasons.
Lazar has the most AHL/NHL ups and downs, but the last 3 seasons have all been in the NHL.
Tierney is the only 1 of the 3 on a 2-way contract calling for a $400k salary in the AHL. The other 2 would each make $1Mil. That either makes him the re-assignment to the AHL and risk his being claimed or one of the other 2, most likely Lazar, gets waived for the purpose of playing in the AHL.

From my observations in their AHL play:
- I don't believe Clarke is a player who makes any kind of impact in the NHL.
- Holtz will only fit if he is given the opportunity to skate with a line intended to score. Still at 21 for a good portion of this coming season, another year in the AHL perfecting his flaws and putting up BIG numbers might see him making an impact in Jersey next season. Sitting in the press box since Lindy doesn't seen to want to suffer through his acclimation, is just not going to do a thing to raise his play to an NHL level. He's reached the point of play him, send him down for 1 more extensive development period, or trade him to someone that will give him ice time to let him get it down or bust.
- Foote would have to clear waivers.
He is not a PK specialist.
He is not a strong defensive forward unless he only plays that way when in NJ.
He is not the power forward people seem to see him as. Going down the boards with the puck and attempting to barge his way past a defender (forward or D-man) who is facing him usually sees him stopped and oftentimes not only stopped, but down on the ice.
He is not a fast skater nor a guy with keen edges.

Unless I and CapFriendly have both missed a player. the Devils don't have 15 forwards not counting 1 of Foote or Holtz.

Do the Devils run with 13 Fs and 7 D after signing Bahl. (Why is this one taking so long?)

How about 13 forwards and 8 D with Nemec not getting everyday ice? Bad move IMO.

I'm guessing the 1-13 forwards above + Foote and 7 D unless Fitz picks up 1 more player that's looking for work.

A trade for Helle changes the whole schematic.

I think this upgrades our roster for sure. He should be an excellent fit on the 4th line . Adds exactly what we needed to add .
I prefer him as a perfect fit in the 4th compared to trying to find a place for Boqvist to fit and there just wasn’t a spot that made sense . Ya Boqvist may be better at producing points than Nosek , but that’s not what the bigger need was . The bed was fir a cheap contract player that is good at the PK , is deadly at face offs , and is really good defensively and excels at knowing how to get the puck out of the defensive zone .

lol, “strawman” coming from you is absolute gold, but you are right if it wasn’t for face offs there would be absolutely no reason to care about what he did in the playoffs…. Keep going

Please find the posts that said McLeod "wasn't a factor in the playoffs", which was the original post.

This is an intriging signing.

Obviously its great insurance for McLeod if something happens in Hockey Canada scandal.

It also opens up a many different lineup options which potentially is bad news for Holtz/Foote/Clarke.

I wonder if this is a signing requested by Ruff. He clearly did not trust Holtz last season and is probably uncomfortable with Holtz penciled in as a Sharangovich replacement.

And if he insists on Huala playing with Jack then we may get a lineup like this:

Huala-JHughes-Meier
Bratt-Hischier-Toffoli
Palat-McLeod-Mercer
Lazar-Nosek-Bastian

Or

Meier-JHughes-Mercer
Bratt-Hischier-Toffoli
Palat-Huala-Lazar
Nosek-McLeod-Bastian

I’m sort of confused. Did we need this?
Yes. They needed some extra NHL center depth for if / when injuries happen. Now you can move Haula to the wing in certain situations and still have 4 line center depth. Allows for increased flexibility. It was the last open forward slot that needed to be filled.

They still have room to make a goalie upgrade as $1 million was about budget for an extra forward signing.

Jack can't/won't work with Timo, they're both absurdly high volume shooters.

Best case scenario lines:

Meier-Nico-Mercer
Bratt-Hughes-Holtz
Palat-Haula-Toffoli
Clarke-Nosek/McLeod-Bastian

Holtz doesn't play himself into this team's future/looks off still

Meier-Nico-Mercer
Bratt-Hughes-Toffoli
Palat-Haula-Clarke
Nosek-McLeod-Bastian

“He is just a guy. If he didnt win faceoffs (which overall don't matter) at a very high clip, no one would care about him.”

I didn’t have to go back very far through my notes to find this…..

Unless you wanted me to find the quote that you just made up instead of what I actually said. Then you are right as usual, I can’t defend something you just made up for me.

Again, keep telling us more about that strawman.
