Are you actually comparing Ryane Clowe to a run of the mill enforcer?

This has been a skating league since 05-06. Ryan Clowe managed to a be a pretty useful player through 11-12, so the thesis that the game has left him behind is pretty unfounded.

No. He's certainly more skilled, but he may be the slowest forward on this NJD team.

He's overpaid but we'll be comfortably under the cap for the foreseeable future so who cares?

I don't really care who the Chere quotes come from, they are a pretty fair description. It's not like he is bashing the guy, he just says he got slower with age while the game got faster. It's not like Clarkson was lightning speed out there, so it doesn't matter that much.

I like the attitude and toughness he brings, but I'm not sure at all this will be a beloved contract down the road. Right now there was no choice though.

The issue isn't entirely what they say. The opinion/observation is one thing. But the source is a bit factor in why is this even news? First off, coming from Chere it makes it questionable. But then just saying its someone in the organization could mean literally anything. I care slightly more if someone higher up in the Devils organization said this. I don't give a damn if an accountant (who obviously wasn't fired) is speaking from the same lens we all do on here and just doesn't really like clowe.

Also don't forget how high the cap will get in the coming years, I doubt Clowe's contract will handicap us in the future(if it ever comes to that).

This is the type of player that Lou has blinders for. Big, physical and a character player to boot. That's why I'm worried that the concussion issue as well as the drop in performance tends to get lost in the background because of Clowe's past reputation.

Lou has blinders for players that are vital to team success. Clowe may well decline. Lou is willing to take that risk to get a guy he thinks is vital for the lineup.

While i agree likes these type of players. I dont believe he would sign the guy just because he likes him. Lou did his checking and if he didnt think it would be a good investment then he wouldnt have signed him. He wouldnt want to hurt the team in anyway.

Lou makes decisions with his mind a hell of a lot more then he does with this heart.

Yes and no. Lou is in a tough spot. Clarkson bolts. He has the pick forfeiture which would be an embarrassment all around. He may have been forced to roll the dice on this.

Under. Bet he deletes it.

Nah. I'll say over, but not by much. Marty has one. Elias. Sal. Even Barch. They just dont use them much haha. He's got 62K followers and thats a potential future revenue stream for him. He'd be wise to keep it, but he wont be using it a lot.

It'd be a bit hypocritical of that to be required espc with the extent Marty took to it, but that also did serve a purpose for team exposure with the cover vote thing.

Lou has wanted Clowe for a long time. This isn't a spur of the moment desperation move.

Lots of teams covet guys like Clowe. He has a rare blend of skill, size and grit. I hope he turns it around because he seems like a good enough guy, but it doesn't look good as far as his concussions and overall health go. He never got it together last season, looked lost for a decent amount of his Rangers tenure. I am not sure that he is still the player that he once was. It is without a doubt a bad contract, but as other have said, the Devils are not going to be crippled by the cap anytime soon so that is kind of a moot point.

I don't care how fast Clowe is. This is a forechecking team, not a run-and-gun circus. We roll four lines and defeat our opponents through relentless cycling and puck possession. We dump, we chase, we force turnovers, and we win battles. That's why guys like Zubrus, Parise, Clarkson, and CBGB have been so effective in the past few years.

It's how we made it to the Finals last year, and that's how we'll have success in the future. He'll earn his paycheck by winning battles and finishing plays, not by going coast-to-coast. I don't care if Clowe has zero breakaways in the next five years, that's not what he's here for.

Did anyone really expect Clowe's cap hit to be lower than $4.5 million? If he had a better season last year, and was healthier then IMO he would have probably been as hot or hotter than Clarkson on the market.

Arguably the fastest team in the NHL, top to bottom, just won the cup. Not so far fetched.

Your argument has soo many flaws its hilarious . They didnt win based on speed, They won because they had the most talent.

Did Boston have that much speed ? (LA or NJ in 2012 ??? Boston or Vancouver in 2011 ??? )

Did you see how much trouble their transition game gave Boston? Their back end was extremely quick with Keith, Oduya and Leddy most notably. Then you look at their forwards who were a bunch of thoroughbreds, including the 4th line (Frolik, Kruger) that was lightning fast. Puck pursuit and quick transition is the name of the game today.

You don't need a fast team if players have good positioning and a strong system.
