I doubt Lou would give a player so much money if they had major concerns about his health.

Obviously he's overpaid but that's free agency, all I care is that we are a better team with him than without him.

He was cleared after his first and then got re-concussed in the Rangers-Washington series and missed every playoff game after that.

Hmmmm....

Maybe this signing isn't going to be such a good idea after all.....

Well....We'll just have to wait and see then. Maybe a different system will help.

(Not trying to be insulting) Or maybe the Rangers (Or whatever Doctor) cleared him to quickly. It wouldnt be the first time in the histoy of sports when a player "down played symptoms" or a Doctor rushed someone back because the team needed them.

Hell i supposed he could be hiding symptoms now. But i am comfortable that Lou did his homework.

If every player that gets a concussion is a risk then almost have the NHL is a risk to sign at this point.

Which is why I said "maybe a different system will help". You recall that type of "system" that TORTS ran, right?

I'm surprised Clowe didn't get multiple slapshots to the head....

This isn't about Clarkson. I didn't want Clarkson back for 3 mil to be honest with you. Forwards after the age of 30 do not get better (don't post the rare exceptions), especially grinding type players like Clowe and Clarkson. Clowe gets dinged up a lot already, which is evident by him playing 1 full season in the NHL. If this deal was for maybe 3 years, fine. See if his 3 year peak 3-6 seasons ago wasn't a peak and maybe he's got another 50 point season in him. But for 5 mil a year, you are talking about a guy who should be playing on your top 2 lines. A guy who put up 45 points two seasons ago and 19 points in 40 games this year is not a top 6 forward. Then you throw in the concussions and it makes less sense.

This contract and player is essentially Zubrus redux. I'm hoping it turns out the same way.

I think he's pretty much like Clarkson. I find a lot of his game is actually better than Clarkson, but having him around is kinda like having Clarkson, and hopefully even better.

Maybe towards the end of the contract it might not look so great, but lets put it this way. We have Tallinder, Salvador, and Volchenkov all around for over $10.5 million in cap hits. This is by far not the worst contract on the team, and he'll even provide some scoring. As was said, he's a much better passer and skater than Clarkson so we'll see. My buddy who I've talked about that works with the Sharks said that he's an incredibly solid dude off the ice too. He thinks as long as we don't expect the world from him, that we'll really like him. The team just wasn't clicking at times early in the season.

They went through a big slump of mostly just shootout wins and OT losses at one point in between their hot start and hot finish, so he became expendable with the fact that he was to be a UFA.

I love when this board starts assigning number values to players and then proceed to pout when the cap hit exceeds that. The team got better today, stop crying about money being spent that isn't even yours.

but muh tickets that I paid for!

Relax. The Devils didn't sign him with no clue of his current medical standing. He's clear. They know he's clear. Relax.

Lou did not overpay by 3 million. He overpaid by 800k. Seriously this board never ceases to amaze me.

And by two years, but that's FA though the price for Ryder and the realization we're a cap team again with the cap set to go back up next year makes me feel better about this.

Yeah a lot of people did not like the Zubrus signing initially. Hell, I remember people complaining about as recently as the 11-12 pre season. Someone started a fake rumor that the Devils were waiving Dainius when we were having cap trouble at the beginning of the 10-11 season. I think a lot of people will become happy with Clowe. Like I said, maybe at the end the contract won't look that good, but the cap will have risen, and he'll still likely be more productive than some of the overpaid turds we have on defense right now.

I'm not sure what to put now. I mean no more Poni, no more Clarkson. I'll have to give it some thought!

From Jersey w/ Love
i've calmed down a bit since this morning.

Having said that, I still do not like this contract. Not at all. Too much term, too much cap. I could deal with one or the other.

I still, however, like the player. As a fan, I shouldn't be too concerned about who is writing the checks.

Some say he "regressed" last year. He had a bad year, no luck. It happens. I don't think that's his normal. I think he's still anywhere from 40-60 points... 15-20ish goals.

I'm just very concerned about his concussions. He's a power forward that might have to limit his power forward game. I can't imagine him fighting too often.

At the end of the day, I do think he's a better all around player than Clarkson. Argue that if you want, but he's a good replacement for him. And we're a better team with him. The Ryder signing helps a whole bunch.

I can't worry too much down the road. If his head breaks on him again, I suppose you can always LTIR him. problem solved.

Important to note that Clowe isn't just a grinder. He's got good offensive awareness and can make a play when it's there. There's a reason he fit in so well with all the skill in San Jose.

Didn't we use to call Foster something like that....except without the Kremlin?

When he went to the Flyers I started calling him the big orange cone. There's actually a bar band with that name that plays clubs all along the Jersey Shore.
