Something tells me they were asked about him in a trade and decided to either sign him or trade him and he said ok. He's been good. In three years this contract will be nothing. The only issue I see is next season's defense and I have a hard time seeing Nemec return right now. I expect they move him rather than Hamilton.

The contract doesn't bug me, but if this results in Nemec being moved for anything less than a really stellar returned then I will be more than just a bit bugged.

Not a bad deal. It's not some straight up steal but we basically have him locked up in his prime and he's a righty.
Nemec is going to be the throw in with Haula, Palat, and the RFA rights to Glass in the EP40 trade.
He isn’t Elias, Parise ect. He is Jonathan Kovacevic and presumably you should have internal replacements ready.
I get why the player and agent insisted on one. It’s change in management insurance.

If this is it for this deadline, I'm not thrilled about this signing to be honest. I don't like what it means for Nemec/Casey and Hamilton, who are more important pieces long term. Seems like all the moves haven't been sorted out and this deal was agreed to prematurely. Could force the FO's hand to make a move they shouldn't otherwise.
If the team wants to genuinely upgrade the forward group one of Nemec/Casey were almost certainly going to be moved, probably along with Mercer. My guess is they send out Nemec who will return more than Casey. While I really like Hamilton I could also understand if the team chose to move him this offseason to rebalance the cap a bit with a Luke contract coming up.

Hamilton can't stay healthy. Its a third time for his short tenure and we have Luke in the roster. Luke is younger, more raw and not as quite productive but his potential and moments of great play are promising enough. Nemec and Casey are both promising prospects but if we want to add young forward with top 3 potential we should you at least one of them. This is not what I really like but this is it. Its better to be young nhl level center with strong ceiling. Or already productive NHL center who will be longer under control

This is actually a much better deal than I originally said. Our right side isn’t as promising as we once thought 
Despite the flack he often gets from folks, Hamilton has been very, very good since Xmas. However, it’s better to move a player a year too early than a year too late and risk his value tanking. Fitzgerald has established a history of waiting and holding for way too long (see 23-24 goalie, Holtz, etc.) which scares me. I wouldn’t be in a rush to move Dougie if we were devoid of serious issues with our forward group. That 9m can be reallocated and the assets could potentially be used to acquire true top six winger. With a logjam at RD, it also makes sense if you believe Nemec or Casey is going to have a future with the big club.

They're gonna do what they did with Holtz to Nemec. Not play him properly or at all, bash him in the media and trade him for pennies on the dollar
There is only about a month left of the season. There’s only so much they can do before it ends. I expect they trade him this offseason absent a sharp upward turn in his play. With the way this season is crashing and burning his narrative will be a relatively modest one compared to everything else going wrong as I see it.

Holtz is going back to Europe after this season almost guaranteed. I don't think playing him 'properly' (whatever that means, he sucked) would've done a whole lot for him.

With this signing the Devils have 6 dmen signed for next season without any spots for Nemec or Casey to seemingly win. What do you think is going to happen?

Nemec will be traded. Likely Hamilton too if the price to move him isn't outrageous. Casey will compete with a depth RHD for playing time.
