Confirmed with Link: Devils Re Sign Kovacevic 5 X 4

I expected the Middleton contract. Can't in slightly under that I'm aav with an extra year, so no problem with this financially.

I'm a little concerned that we simply do not generate enough offense from this d corps though.

Kovacevic must be the first bottom pairing defenseman to play nearly 20 minutes a game. Congratulations to him on figuring out a way to be out there as much as the other guys from the least played pair.

Kovacevic is playing shutdown minutes with Siegenthaler and he gets called a bottom-pair D. Okay, sure.

I don't feel too bad or too good about it. So it's probably fair.

Just seems kind of inevitable that they trade Casey and that will piss me off if the return is anything less than a star.

Remember when everyone looked good next to Nico or Jack, and then horrendous away from them?

Kovacevic has looked like a mid 3rd pairing defenseman with Siegenthaler hurt, and that might be polite.

He has been playing almost exclusively on an R-R pairing, which is not at all fair to him. Incredibly, they're above water in xG and actual goals. Him and Luke has been a disaster together but they haven't played together that much.

I don't understand you sometimes man. Kovacevic has like... 40 games where he looked like a stellar player. All of those games were next to Siegenthaler. He has 170 games where he looks like a bottom-pairing defenseman (or a press box suit).

$4AAV is fine. But.. giving him 5 years is too long. Giving him no trade protection is bonkers.

Because paying $4M for a guy who looked like a stellar player for any amount of time is an enormous win. $4M is nothing on today's cap, it's even less on the cap 2 years from now. Wait until UFA and let's see who gets paid $4M a season, I guarantee none of them will have done anything close to what Kovacevic was doing with Siegenthaler.

He also doesn't have 170 games where he looks like a bottom-pairing D, he just has a lot of games where Montreal thought he was that. He was profiled as an average D before this season.

You cannot sign a UFA player for 5 years in this league without giving them some form of no-trade protection. You are living in a fantasy world.

They didn’t have to do the deal today. 5 years is a long time to lock up a roster spot. This is an instance where you have time use it. Get more information on the future of the defensemen coming up.

I'm ok with the signing but can understand fans being upset as this team has drafted heavy on defense as of late and we are filling most spots with trades or ufa....So I get both sides...

What? He is a pending UFA and the season is nearly over. What more information do you need?

He wasn't going to take a one year deal to stay here. Half the league would offer him way more

I have no problem with this, I think I'm more shocked it was done on the day of the trade deadline.

It certainly makes the next move very interesting. Do we deal Dougie or Nemec in the summer?

The only real negative to me is I think it might spell the end for Nemec, unless they actually move Dougie this summer, which still seems unlikely to me.

Once the season ends, Kovacevic doesn't have a ton of incentive to sign a long-term deal versus walk to UFA. I mean this is the thing that everyone threw in Lou's face for years that he wouldn't negotiate early enough with guys.
 
NMCs seem pretty standard these days, so I'm not sure why people are freaking out about it. Is it smart? No. Is it the cost of doing business? Probably.
