And once again, after absolving Allen blame on that breakaway once they started getting more shots, he needs to stop that second one.

We're getting as much out of him since November as we are out of Haula, Cotter and whoever else on the island of misfit toys.

Granted, we've been shutout in 2 of his 0-5-0 games. And we were probably getting shutout 1-0 (or however many empty net goals they were gonna score) even if he did stop that stinky second goal. But imagine getting that 4 minute power play down 1-0 and not 3-0.

Oh wait, no we weren't. Our power play/man advantage situation of any kind (just like last night) was as bad as I've seen it since the Recchi era.

That goalie pull was a joke, the empty net goal happened immediately. I'm surprised they didn't ring up more empty net goals.

Power play was a momentum killer tonight. We kept getting them at times where we looked good at 5 on 5. It's a shame.

We played much better tonight than last night. The defensive commitment and structure were there until the point when our power play couldn’t score and Byfield gets that sudden chance down low.

Trust the system and the approach and keep working it. It’s rewarded us and will keep doing so.

The Kings are a good close checking team and so are we. They gave us next to nothing. The game came down to who finished a chance or two and who didn’t. Tonight it was them. We beat them in our house and this was that same game in reverse.

I am a little worried by how gassed or without legs Nico looked tonight. The 2 on 1 with Meier at the end of the second evaporated like I haven’t seen from him lately. Also we are getting zero from Hamilton right now.

But remember Bratt sets up Palat with net to shoot at and Foegel gets a lucky stick on it. Jack gets the puck under Kuemper’s arm but it nicks him and then caroms off his stick. We have a goal called back. Those are the things that made the difference in this game.

Keep to it. It’s a long season. Don’t get too low about this just go out and keep playing our game.

Considering competition maybe this was better but I thought last game was definitely better even if the 2nd and 3rd were bad. That 1st was way better than anything tonight and it's not like they played well at all tonight. They f***ing sucked.

I was also talking about this season, sorry for not being clear. What I wanted to say is that other than the bottom 6, I think this group is contender level. If they get a few solid additions to the bottom 6, they might get there.

They just need a few guys to get out of funks and one smart addition in season to get them to the good enough threshold.

I beg for Cotter to be moved to the 4th line. We can’t trot out him, Haula and Mercer together any longer. They just don’t provide anything.

Fitz will address this sooner than later if it persists. He spotlighted it a month ago, so he’s already well aware.

I beg for him to either be with Jack-Bratt or out of the lineup. Unfortunately neither thing will happen.

We dominated Anaheim in the first, but we honestly played like shit the 2nd and 3rd periods.

Keefe was right to call out that they’re giving up chances defensively that they simply weren’t for the past month.

The Sharks just got shutout by the Flyers last night.

And by BOTH goalies! Not even one guy. They couldn't even score a goal on either of the .870%-something goalies the Flyers ran out there last night.

It's probably gonna be Askarov, who isn't as bad as Georgiev, but we should still win and I'd have to think we terribly outplay them, unless we just flat out no-show.

We outshot them 44-26 last time while only playing like 25 minutes.

I do agree the 2nd and 3rd was bad but that 1st blew this whole game out of the water. They sucked tonight from start to finish.

Oh I’m sorry you’re technically correct. Let me fix it for you. It’s possible, but pretty unlikely, that a team who struggles this badly to score for huge stretches is going to go far in the playoffs.

Is that better for you?
Not really. We score more goals than most teams. Now that we have competent goaltending and great defense, there has to be some massive problem, totally unique to the the New Jersey Devils, that will surely prevent us from winning anything.

We should all just accept that none of this matters all that much once the playoffs start — and that getting in is what matters. Who has the hottest goalie and hottest PP usually determines things, not to mention all the luck that goes into winning a series.

Pretty much all this determines right now is where we seed and who we play in the first round. Would suck if we slump a bit too much and cost ourselves a better position but it is what it is.

We have no idea who is going to come out hot in game 1 and who is going to turn cold. You try to put the best team on the ice you can and see what happens.

Never thought someone like McLeod who was looking like a permanent bum would suddenly figure out how to he a NHLer in the playoffs but it happened.

Guys we shit on now can easily get hot at the right time come April. Palat has made an whole career on being that kind of player.

See zero reason to go into despair mode over one losing streak at the half way point of the season.

In a game we didn't get shut out in either.

I had several other posts about this topic and I clarified in my response that I don’t care they scored a goal tonight.

Obnoxious as hell when you guys start with the technicalities and semantics to Baghdad Bob concerning realities. This team routinely goes huge stretches of making JAGs looks like prime Hasek, the shutouts are a symptom but there’s even more to the story.

If the Devils come back and beat the Sharks, no one will care about the Columbus/Carolina/Anaheim/LA losses in the long run but the bottom six is a really big issue that needs to be addressed.

Cotter- 2 goals in 29 games.
Haula- 0 points in 17 games.
Tatar- 3 goals in 35 games.
Bastian/Dowling/MacDermid/Lazar- 5 goals combined on the season.

Mercer and Palat have playing better recently but they were on this list very recently too.

You’ve got to give the Kings some credit for that. They force you into an ugly defensive game where you’ve got to be patient and finish your few chances. Once we got behind they kept the pressure on, knowing that a 2 goal deficit we couldn’t overcome. We didn’t finish a couple looks and they then burned us. Second night of a back to back, weird hour on New Years Day in their building . . . We did the same thing to them in Jersey.,

Jack is looking frustrated and trying to do too much. Nico like he’s got the flu or something. Hamilton isn’t scoring on the power play. And we certainly got no puck luck either tonight. Got to keep grinding at it. Half a season to go.

Were Luke-Pesce as bad as the analytics suggest?

They had to adjust the chart to fit in how shit they were.

I guess it's a good thing they're not surprising us with different problems popping up and getting solved left and right. They've been very consistent. I said very early on in the season that everything is good enough to win besides the 5v5 scoring and the ceiling will be determined by how much that improves. Nothing has changed.

Literally every NHL team goes through stretches like this. Last year, the Panthers had a 1-4 stretch, another 4 game losing streak, and a 3-9 stretch during the season. Edmonton started last season like 2-10. Those two teams made the Finals.

Its frustrating, but we don't need to make every game or two be a diatribe on the whole season. The season is 6 months long.

All that matters is

1) our top players need to stay healthy

and

2) we add some reinforcements at the deadline.
