I'm a bit worried here if I'm a Devils fan. Seems an air of desperation to try to keep this train on the track this year as a "contender" when maybe it should be more of a pivot to next year at this point.

Still - if you can get the Preds to retain, having Hughes-Hischier-ROR moving forward for 2025-26 sounds pretty good. ROR can settle into more of a Danault/Backlund role. ROR certainly solves the 3C issue - it's just you hope he has enough in the tank for two years after this season, already 34 years-old. Perhaps he does though...in a more defensive role. He doesn't rely on speed anyways.

The more I think about it, the more a retained ROR is a really nice veteran 3C option for the Devils, depending on the asset cost.

If it means we can get Nemec or Mercer, I'd take on Palat with no hesitation.

Weird note, but Nashville *might* be able to retain. One of our slots is Ryan Johansen, and the Flyers attempted to void his contract. Very weird open question right now. I assume we can't, but there isn't a clear answer.
Deal . Mercer Palat for RoR . No takesie backsies

Jacks done for the year so I'd think something like
Meier-Hischer-Mercer
Palat-O'Reilly-Bratt
They wouldn’t play together this year, but ROR still has two contract years after this one, and I think A1 was framing how this team’s front six looks once healthy (fingers crossed) at the start of next season.

Preds seemingly can’t retain without risking future penalty. Their final retention spot is taken up by Ryan Johansen who is currently challenging the legality of his contract’s termination.

If they retained on ROR’s contract and RyJo had his contract's termination overturned then that would mean Nashville is retaining on 4 contracts and would presumably open them up to stiff punishment from the league

The more I think of it , the more it makes sense as a perfect fit for NJ . RoR plays 2C until Jack is back and then is the prefect 3c . Wins draws , good defensively , veteran leadership , produces decently , cap hit will be a bargain and isn’t too long of a commitment .
I just hope the cost isn’t crazy . Hopefully for the Devils Trotz lets him go.

Ah yeah, I don't think Hughes moves to wing but maybe.

On NHL Live (NHL Network) earlier this evening, Friedman said the Preds are looking at options for ROR, but ROR would prefer to stay in Nashville unless it's a perfect situation. He said the Leafs inquired but ROR had no interest in a reunion with Toronto. He also mentioned New Jersey being interested

ROR makes a lot of sense for the Devils. Stopgap top 6 C for this year. I know it's a lost season because of Hughes, but at least gives them a better fighting chance in the 1st round assuming they get there. And gain some playoff experience.

But then next year when the Devils want to take a step and be a serious contender, he slots in as the 3C as he should while moving into his mid 30's.

Also brings in some veteran leadership as a previous captain, something they seriously lack.

Orielly should not any call where he goes. He goes to the team that offers the most. Trotz is a buffoon for allowing a player who doesnt have a movement clause to dictate where he goes

Do you want to be a popular UFA destination? Because trading high profile, somewhat recently signed players is a sure fire way to kill that

lol Toronto spurned hard.

-Wouldn’t accept the ‘A’ when he was traded there

-Wouldn’t re-sign there

-Now shooting the Leafs down for a 3rd time

Toronto needs to take a hint

I remember getting shit on (mostly by other Leaf fans) for saying ROR would want nothing to do with this loser core group

Understandable but also players Understand that it's a business as well and if you want protection you make sure that's in your contract. Plus oreilly isn't on the block for nothing nashville is the 3rd worst team in the league and nashville is dire need of a rebuild but unfortunately orielly is the best trade chip you have. Your job as a gm is to build a championship roster and right now trotz is failing miserably. If toronto offers the best package you take that for the betterment of your future. Plus trotz did duchene really dirty already

I get where youre coming from, but ROR is especially the kind of player who's earned that respect around the league.

As much as getting bought out hurts a players ego, at least they get to double dip on salary and pick their next destination. Far more preferable to getting traded to an unwanted destination

No because they'd understand how the Predators were built, this argument comes up all the time with big cities and it never does anything to their reputation or ability to attract. Players will still be attracted to the city of Nashville, no income tax, calmer lifestyle if you come from a rabid hockey market previously, etc.

Seeing what Nelson brought back as a rental, ROR should reel in a huge haul. Talking Nemec or Mercer if the deal is with the Devils.

ROR has two years left at a very affordable cap hit and it's not like he's cooked, either.

Not only that but do teams wanna trade for a veteran player that doesn't wanna be there? ROR seems like the kind of guy who wants to feel comfortable in a place and not have a bunch of extra drama around (i.e. Toronto). He picked Nashville for a reason.

The Devils are trying to strengthen their lineup, so it only makes sense if the trade is for draft picks and prospects. And I'd be really surprised if they trade Nemec for someone as old as O'Reilly.

I would do Mercer, not sure the devils would though.

Lessens the net gain from the ROR acquisition in the immediate season
Window just opening for this team trading Mercer for a 34 year old will start closing it ...Deals like this will kill our future....U want Mercer we get L'Heureux otherwise ROR not worth it
