Kochetkov has been very impressive, but sometimes I wonder about goalies there in recent years.

Mrazek somehow got Kyle Dubas to give him a 3 year deal because of two solid seasons there (he did have a below average season there as well) and he's played well nowhere else since 2015-2016.

Andersen somehow goes from looking anywhere from worse than Jack Campbell to shot and broken in Toronto, then has a Vezina contending season in Carolina.

Raanta looks like he's about cooked, comes to Carolina and performs above average.

Both have been shit this year. Freddie has been injured and hasn't played a game since two nights after Blackwood last played. You can only shelter old and frequently injured goalies so long.

What if...and don't call me crazy here...but perhaps it's possible...that a really solid defensive structure in front of a goalie has a big influence on their save %?

I know, I know...it's hard to believe...but it just might be a thing.

Carolina is definitely a more goalie friendly system than Toronto was but Andersen had three great seasons, then one shakier one and one final injury riddled crap one there.

His reputation, like everyone on Leafs, took a hit from the post season chokefests but I don’t know if Carolina has had a better goalie at any point lately than Andersen circa 2016-19, other than Andersen circa 2021-22.

That signing seemed like the perfect move last season until he got hurt this season but it is just a 2 year deal, if he comes back and plays well the rest of the way it will still have worked out.

Raanta is good every other season, he’s the Philly of goalies. Yes, the Flyers broke that pattern and Ranta will eventually stop doing it too but it’s amusing (to me only I’m guessing).

The power play is irritating me more than anything, especially the second unit which to say is useless would be generous.

Every time we go on the power play I instantly don't want it, as all I'm worried about is either not scoring on it and killing momentum or even allowing shorthanded chances/goals against.
To me the second unit is whatever. I dont think its that important how good they are or who is on it, because when I think of top teams, its the PP1 that does its thing and PP2 gets whatever is left. The only reason we are talking about PP2 is cause PP1 hasnt been good either. I dont truly know who coaches the PP anymore or what is being said, but those guys on it have too much talent to not have a better PP than 20% that ranks at 24th.

Only good teams worse than Devils would be funny enough Carolina (so theyre gonna score tonight) and to lesser extent bubble teams in Florida and Nashville.

I'm gonna be real. When thinking years back what this teams core was gonna be, powerplay was the least of my worries. I thought with Jack as the motor it would work like a charm. I never thought Nico would be a great PP player, but atleast good complimentary piece. Bratt I had no doubts about either.

But it just goes to show that even when you have good personnel, it dont mean success. I think Pittsburgh has had plenty of bad years (with and without Recchi) on the PP even when they had guys like Sid, Geno and Letang.

I think whoever is coaching the PP needs to get their shit together and be more hard on the players. Right now it feels like they dont have much of an idea and its just Hughes spinning with the puck for 90 seconds and other 4 guys wait to see what happens.

Glad to see Noesen still hanging around in the big league.

Looking at this goal. None of the Devils on the ice are no longer with the team. Noesen, Hall, Boyle, Vatanen, Greene, Schneider. Crazy how fast time moves.

For sure, Andersen was one of the better goalies in the league to me up through 2018-2019.

Not sure if he just had two bad injury riddled seasons in a row, or if last year was just a comeback year (like Bob and Quick) or it was Carolina. Tough to say.

Mrazek definitely fluked his way to a couple solid seasons there, although the last one was a very small sample of games played due to it being the covid year and he might have been injured at some point that year.
