But wait, why were the Devils –– a team desperate for stability in goal –– one of the seven teams Allen wasn’t interested in?

“No, it was interesting how that all unfolds,” Allen said. “You sit down with your agent, you sort of play things out. It was nothing about the Devils or the city in general, it was just situations where I didn’t know if I could influence my future. I thought they had goalies already signed here long-term. Obviously things have changed a little bit. I think that’s the way that I played it out. Where are places I could play, and things have changed, so now obviously I get an opportunity to play again. It’s been a weird year for me, so I’m just looking forward to playing a few games here down the stretch and finishing the season.
“It’s about how I could have longevity in this league. It’s situational based. The way (Akira) Schmid played last year in the playoffs, they had Vitek (Vanecek), I never thought there would be a spot here. There’s a lot of things to it. I’m really fortunate they came calling. It wasn’t a tough decision.”

“To understand what the philosophy was from the Devils’ perspective, that fit into my perspective on-ice and family-wise too,” Allen said. “It gives me an understanding of where I’m going to be next year with a team that’s got a super bright future. We’re still trying to claw our way back into the playoffs here, but I understand how good this team could be playing against them, watching them and we’re going to battle here down the stretch.”
