Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - playoff edition

This was years ago when it was still the fire and ice lounge. Some of the worst stomach pain ever.

And I've felt the wrath of those mucho nachos before...
I used to love the mucho nachos. Bummer that they went away. Probably a decade ago, but I’ve only been to the two Jersey retirement games at home since 2012.

By the way, the Indian restaurant comment was a Sopranos reference during Tony’s fever dream where he realized p***y turned informant. When Tony has mussels from Vesuvio and blames it on Artie, until Carmela tells Artie that Tony stopped at an Indian restaurant first and blames it on that.

And Tony says the mussels came up undigested.

I was bummed no one got the reference that quickly.

I'm actually the only native New Jerseyian that hasn't seen the Sopranos all the way through. (ducks tomatoes)

Cannot extrapolate what Stephenson did on the Kraken, to what Stephenson could have done on the Devils. Stephenson playing 3rd line minutes on this Devils team (a perennial contender), looks much different than him playing hard 1st line minutes for the Kraken. He would have the Tavares role on this team, not the Matthews role. Even playing so poorly, he has just 7 fewer points than Cotter and Mercer combined. I'm using points because I'm immune to xG. Took that vaccine before the pandemic.

The deal is ugly for the Kraken because they are a desperate team. This would not have been an ugly deal for a team that's 2 bottom-6 pieces away from winning the Cup (which I think we are). And UFA contracts are all about the player and less about the team. The players earn their career paycheck and the teams use big UFAs to fill major gaps they can't via trade/draft/etc. I don't expect him to finish all 6 years in Seattle, and if he does, that means Kraken have improved.

I look forward to seeing what Bennett gets on his next deal.
You don't get to use his first line point totals as a point for him while blaming every failure on that role

This is NJ Angels erasure.

That's crazy because I'm trying to literally make the same exact one. I want it on a black New Era snapback just like that one. The logo came out great. Where did you get it done ? I need to make one just like that and if anyone on here wants one as well, I'd be glad to make extras and ship them to you.

I don’t know if I want a piece of that Horvat deal.
I don't think it's that bad. He is only 30 yo and has 6 years.
He has very good shot, he is very good interior scorer, not just breakaway tool. He can tip the puck, find open space. He needs to play with good player with good hands what he is actually doing with Barzal, He needs in driver, but he would play with Jack or Bratt for the Devils. He is okayish positinally, not a fan of his game "against" without the puck. He isnt very physical but still he is physical.

You like Jfresh so I tried to find his cards

Its a his card from jan-feb 2023

This card is from dec 2023. So yeah - not a great defensive player. But as I remember we need offense.

He has 39 points 5 on 5 this year. Only Bratt has more from the Devils - 41 points. And Horvat played without Barzal most of the time this season(only 6 points 5 on 5 this year). Horvat has 1.95 points per 60, only Bratt and Jack has more from regulars. He is positive in all metrics like CF% FF% SF% HDC% xG% etc, his SA and xGA are on the level with Bratt.

I would prefer Barzal to trade but I dont think its real and I dont think that Horvat doesnt have 4 years under the belt at least. We have 5 years of Jack and he is some kind of a real candidate to trade for maximazing this window. So I dont see big problems with him when he will play in top-6 or as a third line center with Bratt on the wing (Nico-Timo, Jack-Grits, Horvat-Bratt sounds amazing). I would like Larkin a lot more(more than Horvat, more than Barzal) but again for now i dont see it is real to trade him for.

Im not sure what website it was. Long long time ago. It came out ok. My issue is the logo cone out flat when I wanted it raised. Let me know if you figure how to do that and I may buy one

This is a great reminder for all us that were at that draft to start taking our Metamucil

jack hughes needs to learn how to fall lmao. never change, hf
I know you have your own specifics, but if you would play a hockey game on some kind of regular level with competition, traveling and other stuff that is different to "yard hockey" you would know that fall is a regular thing in hockey and every sportsman should clearly understand how to group , how balance, how turn the body in the right direction when the body cant be stoped from falling. May be if Jack would know it better he would have less damage from his two-three awkward falling he took his injures.

But who am I telling this to?

That would actually be a really cool crossover type of hat for someone who is a fan of both the MLB Angels and Devils. Even though there’s really no remnants of the Angels logo.

The NJ Angels logo really had no business being that damn good. If I was in charge of marketing I'd fanagel a way to make that an alternate uniform for a game held either on April fools day or at least the first week of April.

Free money those clowns left on the table dammit!

I'm not sure what they're going to do to stop Jack from falling awkwardly into the boards and blowing his shoulder out. If these guys were all having recurring/chronic injuries then yeah there might be something up. I don't know that firing the entire staff is going to suddenly make them all stay healthy. I tend to think injuries are more just shit luck in a fast sport filled with randomness and weird shit.
Maybe I'm just being a complainer, but when it's four separate injuries, you have to at least consider that luck is no longer the defining characteristic. Someone on the main board said that all the Hughes brothers play hard, at least.

falling in hockey is taught at a very young age. to suggest one of the best hockey players on the planet needs to learn how to fall is just really really dumb. jack has had some bad luck, that’s just about it.

I'm not trying to be a dick but some of what you're saying raises eyebrows, if you have a chance to grab a talent like Quinn Hughes you 100% go for it, even if it costs you some of your best assets.
you’re acting like quinn won’t just come here as a free agent though. the chance of grabbing a talent like quinn is always going to be there because he’s always going to want to play with his brothers.

should we spend the next two seasons building depth and developing our other high end talent so when he comes over (which is all but guaranteed) it puts us over the top?

or should we trade our best assets now, max out our cap space and leave all the same holes in the roster with almost no depth and no prospects, so he comes now and we still have no third or fourth line and now we have no cheap ELCs that can take spots in the next 2-3 years?

that’s the debate. not “would quinn make the team better now?”

Jack needs to not fall as much. Sounds funny, but it’s one of the most important things that needs to happen for the franchise. Two of his shoulder injuries were from falls where he wasn’t even touched if my memory is correct.

It may get taught and he may be a top player in the world but that doesn’t automatically mean he knows how to fall well. Hell, he seems to fall more frequently than most other players despite how great of a skater he is. Just cuz he’s extremely talented doesn’t mean this is an area of his execution that doesn’t need improvement.
