Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part VI

Clearly there's always going to be some continuation but I guess my impression was that the punk scene in LA produced popular groups that went beyond the club scene while in NY that era had sort of ended and as you've noted, what qualified as punk in that area was less popular than it had been. I think something happened when the Clash played at Bonds. Somehow after that American punk just didn't stay as widely listened to in NY. In contrast, in LA you had Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, etc. I do regret not seeing the Clash.

LA had the go-gos as well

This week has been such a drag without Devils hockey, I've been watching the games from the 2023 series to prepare for tomorrow.

Man, Kevin Bahl actually was a physical force at times in this series. Particularly Game 5. I wish he showed a fraction of that last year, but I guess he struggled to find the balance with the elevated role that he had.
I’ve watched every goal from the 2012 run up to LA, and then every goal from the rangers series lol.

My first "real" gig was 2004, I was 16. Hoobastank. £12.50 (which at the time would have been like $9).

Yeeeeeesh. We managed to get beer with a friends fake ID though. That was good. Supported by Three Days Grace who were much, much better than the Stank.
Went to one concert of many with my future wife while in college. The price of our entrance was our college ID. The headliners were the James Gang. I loved their music and had all 3 LPs they had released at the time. Joe Walsh was wrecked. Never opened his eyes. I know this because we were sitting on the floor directly in front of him. His guitar solos were all over the map and his singing was something like a wounded deer blatting.

McKendree Spring was the warmup band and they were fantastic. So good that the Student Govenrment broke them back for a concert of their own. They were even better the second time.

I can’t believe I didn’t get to that Clash show at Bonds…. Damn it

And Parise would never leave because he was the captain....and Niedermeyer would never leave because he was the captain....
I don't think anyone ever said that about Nieds lol...especially since he was only the fill-in captain, and never got to play in his actual walk year, he went from two years under contract to an insta-FA thanks to the lockout.

Parise did look a bit two-faced publicly lobbying to sign for eighteen months all the while knowing he was probably either going home or linking up with Suter, if not both which they did. Even if you want to buy Vanderbeek having no money to pay him after the Kovalchuk deal as a rationale then don't play PR games. Freaking Gomez was more up-front with his impending FA.

i dont know if i would call them meaningless totally but i get it. if they really wanted to fix this and get movement in the divisions then they really need to focus on playing more games in the division. i know i've said it a ton on here but its legit insane we have out of conference games going on right now

i get the gary hate from everyone but hes honestly only doing his job that his employers the owners want him to do. i would probably be doing the same thing if i was in his spot. i will also always give him credit for holding the line at 16 team playoffs

Been this way for 45 (?) years believe it or not dating back to John Ziegler . Hopefully it stays that way. Format? That will always be debated.

Dean Ween or Mickey or whatever you want to call him was running a charter out of Belmar I believe after the band broke up. My buddy used to fish with him all the time, they were booked for years in advance. It probably got annoying for him though, everyone wanted to talk about music and band crap, he just wanted to fish. I don't care for the music but the dude catches monster stripers.

I'm not sure if you're familiar with the story of how Henry Rollins joined Black Flag. I think it went something like, he was living in DC (where he grew up) and was singing for a band called State of Alert. He was friends with Ian and the Minor Threat guys and grew up with them. He became friendly with the Black Flag guys when they started touring the country. One night they asked him to sing Clocked In on their tour in DC and he sang it. A few weeks later they called up him up at his job, which was at an ice cream parlor. And they asked him if he wanted to move out to California and join Black Flag and replace Dez as the lead singer.

Dez still remained in the band for a while after that, but just as a guitarist.

Speaking of Dez, apparently he lives (or lived) in Newark, right in the Ironbound. Friends of a friend know him pretty well.

In 1989 you could go to the box office and get any seat in the house for $28 or less :). I have a Row 1 $28 ticket for the home opener against Calgary somewhere in the house. We sat just to the side of Mike Vernon twice...He smiled and waived to my wife....never really cared for goaltenders since.
Can you imagine how nuclear I would be on goalies if one waved to my wife/girlfriend?

Siegs. That is all.

This is why I say, the ''Turtling'' we were doing earlier in the year was fine and a different type of turtling.

We were able to do this with the Siegencevic pairing without getting glued in our end the entire period. I first noticed this during the first Panthers game, which it was probably happening before that, but I was at that game in person. So it was easy to notice.

It hasn't been very effective doing this without Siegs and having guys like Cholowski and Nemec on the ice at all or a very unhealthy dose of Dillon playing 20 minutes and change.

Dumoulin has been good, but not Siegenthaler good.

I'm sure Dougie being out also hurts that, as he's more effective in moving the puck up the ice than the other characters who have since played in their absence.

So you can't watch the Caps - Hawks game with Ovi about to break Gretzky's record what kind of dumb NHL bullshit is that? Ovi gets a hat trick tonight I'll be pretty pissed 😤

My pick for worst (real) band name. It might have sounded better if English was your second language but woof.

I think you are correct. To someone speaking English as a second or third language I’m sure this sounded great. To our ears it seems to lack imagination.
