Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part V

Week to week could be 2 weeks or it could be the remainder of the regular season with only 5 weeks left. LTIR might be the best option.
Where have you seen that Dougie is week to week? I mean, I figured he would be but haven’t been able to find anything on his status.

If I totally had internet and YouTube editing skills I would make a Fitz video and clips of him over this song

At least we’ve got the American Jesus in the Devils front office. He helped build the pathetic Team USA roster at four nations.

He proved he can play in the NHL at 20 years old - that is a lot more than most at that age can do. He doesn't need to have dynamic qualities to still be a top pairing player, there are plenty of examples of that.

I would have easily rather have taken Cooley or Wright, but regardless that doesn't mean I am giving up on Nemec. Dougie and Pesce are in their 30s, we don't exactly have many other options on the right side after that other than Casey, who is small.
Ryan Murray proved he could play in the NHL as a 20 year old, so did Tyler Myers, so did Damon Severson, etc.... Proving you can play early just means you have a solid floor, that doesn't mean you have the qualities to project as a future top pairing defenseman. What about Nemec's game specifically makes you think he'll be an elite defenseman?

Like I said before, trading Nemec for a forward with term isn't giving up on him, It's trading from an organizational strength to improve an organizational weakness. You talk about worrying about options on the right side but how about the fact that we have a huge dropoff in talent on the current roster after Nico, Jack, Bratt and Meier with only two decent forward prospects in Gritsyuk and Lenni (neither of which are better prospects than Casey currently is). The forward group is a much larger weakness but we're going to hoard defensive prospects because Dougie is 32 instead of fixing an actual large current issue?

If we make a move at the deadline it better be for a non-rental forward that can be a part of the team for a few years. It makes ZERO sense to throw away assets for rentals with Jack out and Dougie out for the final stretch. I really worry Fitz tries to make a panic move to try and save his job.

I'm all for adding somebody who can help beyond this year, but paying up for rentals seems like a waste. Is 33 year old Brock Nelson really going to move the needle that much? Although I guess at least he can play center, so we wouldn't have to watch Haula or Mercer flounder at #2 center the rest of the way.

Simon Nemec is a better prospect than Seamus Casey; the Devils wont be moving either

I think Nelson would be ok because he'll get more minutes this year and if he likes it then he can return next year. But for most rentals, yeah I'd agree. I think Lou wants a first for Nelson so the argument is pointless. He'll prob be moved to the West

Mercer may be disappointing but he’s worth his contract and is under team control. Don’t know why everyone is so eager to move him.
Because some other team might value his contact and lack of production.

Idk why some of you are so keen on keeping shitty players that don’t help us move the needle. He’s at best a third liner that relies on others to do his heavy lifting.

One playoff birth in the last 5-6 years. Team needs a shake up and he’s another easily moveable piece.

I don't think the Devils should sell, or stand pat - they should get a cheap rental LHD and try to fix center a bit for next season. They should not rent a center or winger.

Getting rid of Haula would be a feather in Tom's cap but I can't see it happening. Haula's complete disintegration is both A: brought up incessantly here and B: severely underrated as a cause for the Devils' rotten play lately. Haula was above 50% in xG on ice in his first game back from injury. Since then, he has one game above 28%, and that's last night. It would not shock me if this is the worst 7 game stretch in the xG era.

I think that's debatable. Casey has better skating, is more dynamic offensively and has better defensive positioning. Nemec has the size advantage and in theory can deal with physicality better but he's yet to showcase those defensive attributes.

And while it's possible the Devils won't move either that doesn't mean it's the right decision. Our forward group is extremely weak after out top 4 forwards and we have very little in the system to help improve that. Hoarding defensive prospects when you have a leaking ship at forward is not a good decision.

If Nelson was younger I could understand that logic but at 34 next season I don't think the Devils can afford to put a sizeable chunk of cap space into another older forward after what has happened with Haula and Palat.

You probably would move on from Palat in some fashion and bring back Nelson + Haula is a lost cause but you could also use the logic that he was probably hurt in some fashion still and he can't be possibly be this bad again but who knows
