Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part IV

Remember when we wondered if we should just give Mercer $6 million per or possibly slightly more, just to buy more UFA years? I know not many people seriously considered it, but it was something that was thought about at the time. He's barely worth what he's making now as it is.

some people even suggested that they underpaid Mercer on purpose to be able to afford Luke (I know at least one person!)

hell, at his point they are paying Mercer TOO much.

When was that again?
Jack has had maybe 2 insane stretches in his entire career.
And both were temporary. He has had zero insane stretches this year. ZERO.

Let us know when he hits 100points and plays a full 82.
His fellow “superstars” have all hit it, and done it. Some of them multiple times.

And when Jack started playing better earlier in the year I praised him for it. I praised the defensive structure, I praised Noesen, I praised Keefe.
And for a second there I thought they might finally be turning a corner. Unfortunately that was all smoke.

As much as you want to tell us October games are as meaningful as a early March game, for a team trying to hold a playoff spot that is very much in jeopardy, you would be literally disagreeing with every single player or coach that participates in this league.

You’re flat out wrong to say anything that happens in October matters as much as it does in Feb/March for a bubble team like us.
Technically it does ‘matter’ as much, it’s just a bit harder to get points in February and March than it is October, that should be your real argument. Also technically Game 1 of a series matters just as much as Game 7 too, just a lot more margin for error and less pressure to win in Game 1.

No this is very clearly not an accurate portrayal of the subtleties or context of what was actually said. You repeating strawmans does not make them true, and no one is making statements based on just feelings like you’re claiming here. The comment about teams who made the finals is a perfect example of how you misrepresent, I went line by line on each of those finalists and pointed out how they did not in fact come out of nowhere to make a run.

Again I have to ask, why do you behave like a NJ Devils PR employee?
Even the PR guys have enough sense to not go after every single post on X or Facebook that ‘unfairly’ disses them in some way

Maybe we should wait for some sort of official announcement before everyone tries to dunk on information.

There was seeming consensus Luke was done for a major amount of time and he came back the next period.
True but Luke came back into the game and there wasn’t the postgame melodrama there was with Luke getting emotional, Keefe getting tossed then sounding somber at the presser

Hilarious...

The only knock on Jack is that he is like the skinny player from Ice Hockey on Nintendo. Everything else he is elite or damn near close.

So someone explain the LTIR cap rules. When does Jack have to come back in order for the cap ceiling to not matter going into the postseason (if we get there)

Why would they do this?

Why would they do this?

Would LOVE any of those guys but I don't think I would make that deal if I was Seattle/Anaheim
Nemec is in the conversation for top RD prospect outside the NHL. It's an extremely valued position.

Seattle has two good RD on the roster in Montour and Larsson, but both are over 30. They have very little at RD in the prospect pool.

In a way maybe this finally wakes Tom the f*** up and make some serious moves to improve our offense, maybe pieces for the future too. Who and how? Idk. Likely? Probably not. But I have a feeling something big is going to go down. He will be feeling the heat soon.

Possibly not as bad as we thought means, we went from season is likely over to season is up in the air.

Tom still needs to buy at the deadline and get help.

Guys he should be trying to get, McLeod, McCann, Peterka, Novak. All are locked up or we would control their rights.

Also, lets look at what we could've had, but what we chose instead and eventually got rid of.
Apparently Rossi still might not be in Minnesota's long term plans, if that is the case Tom needs to be all over that and grab him.

He SHOULD be feeling heat, but I’m not entirely sure he will tbh…Shero wasn’t fired because of bad results, he was fired because he got bad results while trying to be autonomous. As long as Fitz plays the good company man I think he gets more rope than you or I would like.

He’s had one playoff birth since he’s been gm and the team with all the money he spent this year is barely better than last years injury filled can’t get a save team. That rope is non existent right now.

What a cluster FK. We needed a third line center and now we need a second as well. This season isn’t going the way I thought it would. The hockey Gods gave us three cups and now they’ve given us years of misery.
I wouldn’t even be that mad if we made the playoffs but, yet again… two appearances since the Cup run more than a decade ago. I’m starting to think we deserve this.

Brock Boeser is on the market, by the way.

If Jack is out for the season sell off Kovy to the highest bidder and any 3rd/4th liner whose contract expires at the end of the season. Use acquired assets for trades this summer. Play Nemec and Casey for rest of season and let's see what we have with them. Still try to make playoffs and hope Jack can be repaired by then.

I will show myself out now.

No you are gaslighting. Look at you repeating strawmans in this very post that you have already been called out on multiple times before. How many times has it been pointed out to you that one has said those generalized statements that you’re arguing against? Players go through tough stretches - there’s obviously a range there. If your best core players are going through stretches of basically going goal-less for an entire quarter of the season, that is a bad sign. I pointed out precisely how in the past we would be besides ourselves if someone like Parise or Kovy went 5 games without a goal. It turns out I was almost spot on - that bad stretch for Parise that you sent me the longest he ever went without a goal was six games. It’s nowhere near as bad as what we’ve seen from this current group. And this isn’t the first time we see their goal scoring production dry up for way too long relative to their role on this team.

If your top guys are gonna be prone to going 20 games at a time barely scoring, then you either better get some insane depth or you better tweak the core to include guys who are gonna be more consistent than that. Stop telling us that this is just some crazy thought that has no basis in reality.
Had to logout to confirm this response was, as expected, to one of the usual suspects. I really don't know why folks just don't use the ignore function. Disagreements are fine, but those constantly misquoting people, creating nonsensical strawmans, and possessing an inability to admit when wrong (everyone is sometimes lol) are pointless in interacting with.

They just derail any real dialogue. There's enough to actually discuss/debate without engaging in bad faith, fraudulent arguments. That's all I'm saying on it, so hopefully this stays up.

“not as serious as initially expected” could just mean he doesn’t need surgery but his season is still over and still be technically true - a 2 month recovery for a separated shoulder puts him back in may, after what would be the first round. but it’s not as bad as needing surgery and a 4-6 month recovery

basically i’m not getting my hopes up based on a vague cryptic tweet. if there’s tangible good news i’ll celebrate but im not going to see-saw my emotions until there are known details

You are wrong. Not everyone is sometimes wrong. For example, I am never wrong. And my strawmen are always sensical.

I honestly find him to be an arrogant prick. He strikes me as such. And he seems to love to hear himself talk. Like someone who we're not allowed to talk about here. Obviously, he doesn't make himself available to the press too frequently though, like most GMs probably don't.

Now, that doesn't mean I think he shouldn't be the GM because he's an arrogant prick. I just could totally see him going off on some reporter who questions him or asks him about any potential chanting against him. And by going off, I'm not talking Lindy on Novo several times last year or even DeBoer telling TG to apply for a coaching job lol. He just strikes me as someone who can be nasty.

Again, that doesn't mean I think just because he's not a nice guy that he can't be GM here anymore.
