If Hughes wasn’t signed to an absolute steal of a deal with the cap skyrocketing, I might be concerned about his injury issues.

But to be frank, his game would have to really really fall off for him to not be worth an 8 million AAV moving forward.

A lousy GM unable to fabricate a trade due to lack of networking skills will always deplete your future stock to save their hide.

He's definitely networking, but people are probably not calling him back. There's a quote of him saying exactly this either last season or the season prior, believe it was from an NJ.com article, but I can't find it.

At this point, Fitz has to do something to pick up the mental in the locker room. Just lost their superstar forward and lost a ball breaker in Dallas. You have to buy something, that's not to say go f***ing crazy but adds should be made

Agree but I saw some news saying NJD not willing to move nemec, don't know if that is legit or not, we have no one else to move but him, Casey, and Mercer. (Unless good players can be had for picks, do we still have any picks?)

It’s going to suck to watch us crater but not enough to finish in the bottom 10 to keep the 1st round pick from the Markstrom trade. Then again, with our amazing scouts….they’d probably eff it up anyway.

Dougie is out week to week.

A rental that returns a 3rd in this sellers market isn’t of any consequence
Not necessarily ideal but I'd move Allen and Kovacevic and take those assets and add to them and try to return a center. if Allen and Kovacevic and an additional pick/prospect can return Nelson for example (heck it's Lou he may want Haula or Palat) that makes sense under the circumstances. I'm skeptical a good upgrade trade can be made right now but moving around the deck chairs makes some sense given where they have some organizational depth.

Uh, that isn't the point. That'd be a fine perspective if they actually had center depth or forward prospects to develop/leverage in trade. Unfortunately, this team has one NHL Center and a whopping ZERO in the system. Point being they NEEDED him to develop into a well round top line C. A guy that can be counted on in all situations and can elevate the production of lesser players on his line. Team is top heavy with a current top line in its prime and a bottom 5 forward prospect pool. Oh, and no 1st round pick and a 35 year old goalie.

Some of the takes here in my Devils community are a bit, um how shall we put it... cliff-jumpy?

Let's drink a stiff mug of reality for a moment.

The Devils were -- even before the Hughes and Hamilton injuries -- a very unlikely possibility of winning the Stanley Cup this year. This does not represent a "failure" of management or coaching or personnel or anything of the sort.

Prior to the injuries, New Jersey was primed to make the playoffs, with a very winnable first-round matchup against a swiftly fading Carolina team. Though these possibilities are certainly more remote without Jack Hughes (and possibly Dougie Hamilton), they are not impossible. And even making the playoffs this year would represent a huge step forwards for the organization, while simultaneously highlighting the needs for the team going forwards in order to build into an actually realistic Stanley Cup threat.

"Selling" at the trade deadline is probably a bad idea, in that the 2025 draft class is not especially strong and the Devils essentially need to tread water for the rest of the season to make the post-season. Is that possible given the recent injury news? I guess we will have to see.

Next season, I'd expect the Devils to be greatly improved. They will have the cap room to sign their only UFAs of value in Kovacevic and Allen. The Devils will likely get another very talented scoring winger coming into the fold in Gritsyuk, and GM Tom Fitzgerald has a huge trade chip in Simon Nemec to dangle to address the center depth.

For the most part, I would say the current management has done a very good job. This Devils team has been, for many years, among the weakest in the league in both goal and on the blueline. Now and going forward, NJ is very strong in both areas. The combination of Hischier and Hughes gives the Devils a powerful 1/2 punch up the middle, and they are complimented by some outstanding Ws in Bratt and Meier.

Clearly, there is need for another scoring winger or two. The bottom 6 needs to be improved, as does the center depth. These are the organization's foremost tasks for the off-season. But the organization has also built a strong framework to build with. Have they been perfect? No, of course not -- the mid-to-late-round drafting has not been strong and Fitzgerald ran out of cap room before he could add another scoring winger this year. But they have also -- very clearly -- put the NJ franchise in a much stronger position than when they took over the reins a few years back. And also -- very clearly -- the Devils future remains stronger than the present or recent past. That's a win in and of itself.

Needless to say, I am also crushed by the Jack Hughes injury, and worried about the Hamilton injury. But I also realize that a team which was pretty much unwatchable for many years is now very talented and intriguing, and the future remains bright. I'm equivalently intrigued to see what Fitzgerald does at the trade deadline.

What did he turn into?

He isn’t a well rounded top line center?

I wonder if management told Jack they'd try to get these into the playoffs with adds and just to worry about getting back stronger next year as much as it'll be painful to sit on the sidelines for some of these playoff games. Seems like he waited just a day or two to get this shoulder surgery done

Jake Reynolds and his stupid sneakers must be super relieved that the renewal deadline for season ticket holders happened before this all did.

What also sucks is these upper body injuries prevents Jack from really hitting the gym over the offseason of he does want to get stronger. Its tough

Rentals of any consequence have to be off the table. But I wouldn’t hate someone like Pageau who would be here next year. McCann obviously. If Fitz gives up a lot for someone that walks, he can go.
I agree. But the prices are inflated at the deadline. There's few sellers.

I wouldn't rush to make that kind of move. There will be more options at the draft. They don't need to pay for the privilege of having that kind of player for an extra, fruitless playoff run.
