I picked Mercer then enjoyed having the constant trade rumors making me kind of regret the choice.
That’s always a risk with depth players. Guys like Bratt and Meier and Jack aren’t going anywhere but replaceable guys like Mercer Kovacevic Tatar and Hischier can be moved at any minute for a third pair defender.

I almost pulled the trigger on a Mercer jersey during the 22-23 season. His play combined with a 27 goal season looked like he was gonna blossom into a 30+ goal scoring winger kind of comparable to Parise. It's baffling how much he regressed since then and it makes me sad. I was a big fan.

Okay thats fair enough! So we dont accrue space we simply have it from Siegenthaler's cap being allowed as an overage. Makes sense.

But why not still LTIR a player we wont see until April most likely? According to what I read here saying 2-3 months; doesnt this prevent us from having space to callup another dman after another injury?

LTIR at this point, as far as I am aware, is only valuable if the Devils absolutely need to open up cap space in order to ice a full 20 man roster of players. So far, we're not there yet.

Getting into LTIR prevents the team from acquiring any additional cap space ,which is not good.

If Siegs is really done until the playoffs, I don't expect him to be placed onto LTIR until after moves are made at the trade deadline so that we can maximize cap space.

This is what I was thinking - IR until the day before deadline day to accumulate as much as possible, and the LTIR if you're going to make a move on deadline day itself.

Would this work?

We can't even blame it on injuries.... He's played all the games...!

Maybe he needs to break his streak so he can rest up and maybe be better.

Not sure what working pairs you're referring to, but at least to start last game, Luke and Kovacevic were playing together. Obviously losing Siegs as early as we did forced Luke and Dillon to shoulder a crazy load afterwards and lead to pair rotation, but that has been the pairing we've deployed the past few games.

As @SteveCangialosi123 pointed out yesterday, Pesce and Dougie played as a pair together in Carolina in the past. Results were pretty positive, but of course, that was some time ago. Still, it's good that there's familiarity there. I'd personally prefer putting the most senior guys in Pesce and Dougie in that position of one playing on their off side as opposed to Kovacevic or Nemec.
By working pairs I mean:
The defensive pairings we have iced in literally EVERY GAME since Pesce and Luke rejoined the team. I thought that was pretty self explanatory.

Keefe is a fan of keeping pairings and lines together, so I'd expect he'd probably try to find the best guy to slot in next to Kovacevic.

I wouldn't read anything into ice time with five defensemen. He just rotated freshest legs and situational decisions.

The reason I asked is because he changed those pairs about a week and a half ago. I think midway through the Ottawa game if I remember correctly? He moved Siegs with Dougie, Luke with Kovacevic and Dillon with Pesce.

EDIT: Correction, it was midway through the loss in Philly.

Either way, I'm intrigued by putting Pesce with Kovacevic and seeing Luke with Nemec again.
