I don’t think there currently is another D on the roster since Hatakka wasn’t taken off of IR apparently. So Nemec or anyone called up was going to play anyway?

LTIR and IR are not the same thing. You do not accrue cap space with regular IR.

LTIR isn't really an option for the Devils anyways because of Luke's potential ELC bonuses.
I know thats why I asked why we didnt LTIR instead of IR! But, even with the lack of savings from Luke's ELC, were going to leave Siegenthaler out with a roster spot until the playoffs? Doesnt this leave us without a backup defenseman?

LTIR and IR both don’t allow you to accumulate any additional cap space; all they can do is be neutral or shrink your cap space.

IR doesn’t affect the cap but allows you to call up an additional player for the roster.

LTIR allows you to add an additional rostered player and can allow you to exceed the upper limits of the cap to add the player.

In most cases, you only want to use LTIR if you’re already close to the cap max and you need to go over the cap limit to complete your roster.

Okay thats fair enough! So we dont accrue space we simply have it from Siegenthaler's cap being allowed as an overage. Makes sense.

But why not still LTIR a player we wont see until April most likely? According to what I read here saying 2-3 months; doesnt this prevent us from having space to callup another dman after another injury?

The actual mechanical nature of LTIR overages get complicated so someone else probably can explain better than I.

From my understanding, the amount of overage you get it based on your cap level at time of LTIR.

For example, if the cap is at 80 and we have 2 teams, one at 76 and another at 80, both of whom are going to LTIR a guy making 5.

The 76 team could go 1 over to 81 in their relief and the team at 80 can go to 85.

If you plan to be closer to the cap in the future, then you want to delay LTIR to maximize how much overage you’re allowed.

This is also all calculated on a daily basis so this is grossly simplified and I’m no cap expert; so I may be missing the boat

Yup, LTIR won't be used until we literally need it to stay under the cap limit. Probably another injury away from that

Ahh okay so the idea is they will delay Siegenthaler for as long as they can to maximize possible overages (Luke's ELC bonuses notwithstanding) and, if in the event of another injury, may just LTIR him at that point for a callup

That makes sense to me! Even if I misunderstood a part or two; thanks!
