Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - part III

What's not now that works? What is the difference between saying that a skater shooting below career average is just unlucky vs. a goaltender stopping shots below career average is just unlucky?

Yes people acknowledge that that poor defense from skaters in front of goalies contributes to their poor save % (although seemingly many posters here don't). That's akin to recognizing that a shooter's poor performance may be getting impacted by having crappy linemates. This doesn't detract from my point.

No it's not because, what the literal f*** does a teammate have to do with your own shooting percentages? Timo's generating elite chances, he just can't finish them. That's a him problem.

The longer this goes on without so much as a rumor of an attempt to get help the more I question Fitz. I know it takes two to tango and there was some smoke for Miller but for christ sake we need to do something and do it quick. I know it seems rather doom and gloom but I'm not even sure we make playoffs at this point.

It’s not going to be the same impact as what the skaters do in front of a goalie, but yeah why couldn’t it impact shooting %? If his teammates aren’t setting him up in good positions maybe he gets shots but they aren’t from quality spots. Or maybe the defense is bearing down on him more because his teammates stink which is causing him to have to try to get his shots off quicker and less accurately.

That aside the point still stands. If a goalie isn’t stopping pucks very few people will attribute it to bad luck, while if a shooter’s shots aren’t going in it’s often attributed to bad luck. Seems like a double standard.

It is because goalies face far more shots than shooters get to shoot. Goalies face lots of bad luck in a given game, week, or month, but on the whole in a season, save percentages are going to regress towards the mean more than an individual shooter's shooting percentage. It's not a double standard at all, it's just how hockey works.

Also stopping pucks is basically a goalies entire job.

No team is really in selling mode at this point. That's a problem with this type of parity driven league, every team is still mathematically not that far off from being in the hunt. Hell, the Islanders have won 4 in a row and Lou already waits until the last day of the deadline before he sells off any pieces to begin with. He's bringing players in for defensive help because they keep losing guys to injury.

Coupled with the 4 Nations break taking place soon, I think a lot of the league is likely seeing that as the time to consider making their moves. Until then, mostly everyone is standing pat. The Rantanen trade was largely an outlier. You don't see two contending teams flip top level players like that often. Hall was just kind of thrown in there.

Maybe close to a month ago I felt its ok, we'll snap out of this..... but now I'm getting worried.

I barely see the games anymore so I can only go off so much via game summary and editorials, but feels like we've lost our compete level.... the scoring draught has become a huge factor right now...

What happened? Sure I can look at Timo n Bratt needing to get on the freakin scorecard but is that all that's needed? are the mintues to Palat and Tatar hurting us now that the season has progressed? Are the Hughes' brothers lack of discipline causing a rift?

Maybe Fitz needs to strike a deal for help or is it just us being better and get back on track?

We've lost a lot of ground in our secured playoff spot... so it's getting dicey and Idk how this roster is gonna respond to dicey?

The more injuries that occur, the less cap space the Devils have to make a deal. They will either have to rip the LTIR bandaid (bad idea) or find some other way. Frankly I'd be surprised to see any move before the 4 Nations tournament.

I can only give you my own opinion but team looks pretty fine the last 2 weeks or so.

It looked a mess around the holidays and they’re still not back to being a machine but they look much better.

If the puck was going in at a more normal rate or they were getting more PPs, this stretch wouldn’t be talked about in dire tones, imo. Those are 2 things that fluctuate pretty randomly so I’m not going to stress over them.

Team needs some bottom 6 help so badly. They are gassing the hell out of the top 6 late in the games when they are trailing. It's tough to make a deal early when other teams might not be interested in selling yet but I don't think I can survive having to see another game with guys like Dowling, Lazar and Bastian all in lineup at the same time.

I do not think Zegras as a reclamation project is a ridiculous idea IF Anaheim retains 50% for the rest of this season and next season.

I'd throw a couple of picks at Anaheim and throw him on the 3rd line center.

I’m slightly intrigued by the idea, as much as I mock him and the idea he was better than Jack a few years ago.

But I’d have to think they’d want more than that for him at this stage. I’m not sure if he’s quite reclamation project stage just yet, but he’s certainly getting there.

And he’s also a guy that can’t stay on the ice much either.
