My targets I think might be buying retention on a guy with a bit of term.

Miller is making $2m more than Palat and has scored more points in the last 3.5 years (214 in 191 games played) than Palat has in his last 6.5 years (207 in 363 games played).

They are laughably incomparable players. You can dislike the contract or dislike the idea of trading for him -- fine, whatever. You cannot use Ondrej Palat in your reasoning without looking like a clown.

I'm still wondering if the whole west coast thing is a reason most of you guys are unaware of Miller's game. He's gotten Selke votes 4 of the last 5 years. Hart votes three times in that span. All-Star game appearances 3 times in his 5 seasons in Vancouver.

He just had a 103-point season last year. There has never been a player in our franchise history to score more than 100 points in a season. His 66 assists last season would have broken a THIRTY year record for most assists in a year (Scott Stevens with 60 in 1994). He AVERAGES 32G/82 and 90P/82 over the past 5.5 seasons. He has a criminally underrated shot. He produces 5-on-5. He wins faceoffs. He plays perfectly respectable defense. He's a Matt Tkachuk type shit-stirrer.

If you don't want to trade for him because you think he's a locker room cancer, fine. I think a lot of that is Canadian media bullshit. And yeah, he's had a couple of lapses with his motivation, but even with those motivation lapses he out produces anyone in our franchise history, including 86.

He's underpaid by ~4m right now relative to his value. He might be overpaid at the back end of that contract, but by the time he is actually overpaid he has no more trade protection and the league cap is going up. He fits every single need this team has right now.
1. JT Miller is a malcontent. He's been traded away from his prior teams primarily for personality issues. And Tocchet and Quinn have literally confirmed this Pettersson-Miller feud is real. Former teammates are now coming out publicly and saying he's a hard guy to get along with. He's throwing temper tantrums on the ice every other game. It's not "Canadian media bullshit" or whatever. If you want to take a pipe bomb to the team's locker room cohesion, he's the guy. When things start to go poorly, he actively makes them much worse.

2. He should not have ever gotten Selke votes. As someone in the Vancouver market, JT has had exactly one season where his defensive game was decent. Otherwise, he easily leads the Canucks in "controller disconnected" moments and lazy changes leading to scoring chances against.

3. The point is that given his age, there is an obvious risk of decline. The Devils also don't need to take on another big, aging cap hit when they should be trying to clear out their existing ones.
we don't NEED JT Miller lol all we need is a reliable 3C. Someone like that is not that hard to come by at the deadline and we won't need to trade high end assets to get one.

Then you re-assess in July and see where you're at.
Yep. Whereas most contenders will be looking to add defensemen (in a very thin defensemen seller market), the Devils just need to add some complementary forwards.

Trade for Gourde and another middle-six winger and they're in good shape.

Do you have a source for the items listed in your first bullet point? Tocchet and Quinn have blamed JT and not Pettersson? He was traded away for “personality reasons” from New York and Tampa? Can you show me all of the former teammates who say he’s a locker room cancer?

Yes. There were press conferences with Tocc and Quinn where they acknowledged there is an issue with Miller and Pettersson. I did not say they "blamed" Miller because they didn't say that. They did say they had issues to work through. Brad Richardson (former teammate) has come out publicly and said Miller is too hard on Pettersson, and that was in Pettersson's ROOKIE season.

There are literally clips of Canucks rolling their eyes at Miller's outbursts on the bench. Yeah, he is a malcontent.

Interesting. Nico not in the top 10 for Selke per the Athletic, but Dawson Mercer #9

The player I would love to add to this team would be Kadri. I’ve tried to wrap my head around ways to justify adding him, but his deal is just way too brutal for it to make any sense.

Contract aside though, he’s almost exactly what this team needs when adding another forward.

"Do you have sources?"

"Yes" (does not provide sources, but like this one 4th line plug who played (checks notes) 17 games with JT Miller 4 years ago says it's totally true bro just trust me bro).

These are literally public comments. I don't really care if you don't believe them. They are out there. Richardson was on a podcast. The Quinn and Tocc comments were from a media scrum.

I think Fitz changes his ways this TDL. He likes adding players with term in the past, not as rentals. Get rentals- Gourde fits that mold. Nelson might be a better option. As for another winger, I still like Oliveri. Use up the picks, let UFAs go this year (Tatar, Bastian) maybe keep Lazar and Kovacevic.

I think getting that 3rd line more productive is the most important thing. More than who plays where

For me I am just really disliking Haula and Palat this season. I think they are both major bottlenecks...maybe Haula is due to injury? I don't know but the lack of production from the 3rd line specifically has been a major weak link in my opinion.
Just cherry-picking stats here, Palat has 6 goals and 3 assist in his last 13 games.

With Haula out, do they trade for a 3C now, wait until the March deadline, or go with Dowling?

Certainly fewer options and would probably be more expensive to make a move now as most teams are reluctant to sell off players two months before the trade deadline and admit to fans they're punting on the season. I'm fine just waiting it out.
