I am much less bullish on the cap being significantly above its current place in 2024-25 in, say, 2028-29. Can't say more about it than that, but still, nobody can see that coming and it's kind of impossible to GM with that sort of long-term in mind anyway. Regardless, the cap will be going up significantly the next 2 years and so it is best to try to lock everything in before that all happens - if there is a cap correction closer to the end of this decade, the teams that locked in their team earliest will be doing best.

His recent comps are all around 8-8.5 mil on long term deals. It’ll be in that range most likely.

Nah. You can let dougie stay another year and keep Kovy under the cap feasibly.
Don't let a Kovy extension force you into making a bad dougie or nemec or casey move.
If quality value opens itself up, sure.
But keeping the current status quo is more than feasible next year
Maybe he wanted to flex on Drury: “You wanna shit on your star players? Well my stars are playing well, so I’ll slag my bottom 6 instead. Take that!”

Dougie needs to go this offeason. Let Luke take over PP1 and use Dougie's money elsewhere.
On what? Some aging winger who doesn't meaningfully improve either of our top 6 lines as we have seen time and time again that trying the 3 stars on 1 line thing doesn't make a meaningful improvement on 2+ complimentary guy
Dougie is a key reason why our PP is so good. Without dougie it will be worse.

This has been discussed ad nauseum on here so I'm not going to go into it all again, but Dougie's $9M (along with dumping Palat) opens up the ability to bring in someone for Jack's line, sign Luke, and bring back Kovacevic.
The Devils are stacked on the blue line with a nice pipeline and you deal strength to fix other areas, especially when the D in question has been morphing into a PP specialist who needs to be sheltered against the other team's best lines because he's slow.
I'm not sold on the "Dougie is the key reason" our PP is so good. Hand the reins over to Luke who has improved a ton on D and will limit shorthanded opportunities while also having elite mobility and passing abilities that will make opposing team's PK lose positioning.

I mean, he was asked what the next challenge would be that he would like to see the group overcome. I think he was just calling attention to the lack of secondary scoring as of late. Which is not a wrong thing to call attention to at all.
Dawson's goal and assist last game were his first points in 4 games and just his 2nd and 3rd points in his last 9. Him and Noesen have alternated being in the top 6, but now Noesen has been scoreless in the past 6.
Mentioned earlier that Cotter is pointless in his last 14 games. Haula has just a goal and two assists in his last 21 games. Oddly enough, Tatar had 4 points in a 5 game stretch before then going scoreless in the last 3 and now getting scratched. Realistically, it's tough to probably expect much from the rest of the 4th liners offensively.
But I see where he's coming from with the question he was asked. Right now, the two top 6 lines are playing excellent hockey and they're generating the goals. Even when they've come from the likes of Luke or Pesce, Jack and Bratt have predominantly been the ones creating with them. Thankfully Nico's line burst through the dam last game, hopefully it means they're going to be rewarded next for all the work they've done.
Luke does not bring the same threat from the point.
Moving out Dougie and Palat is a ridiculous amount of overkill.
It would leave us, AFTER signing Luke AND Kovacevic, 17+ million dollars to fill a backup goalie and a 4th line.
Unless you're planning on making a pitch to Mikko Rantanen or Mitch Marner, there is absolutely no need to have that much money available.
How many times do we have to try and stick a 3rd star alongside Jack and Bratt before we realize it doesn't actually improve the line?

Nemec could be pretty unhappy if he doesn't have a path to the NHL next year
Still, if possible, I'd prefer to keep Hamilton. It's just not looking very likely.
I think you are overestimating how much front offices will react to one season.
Hamilton is more likely to be on next years roster than Kovacevic.

Utica has played only 1 game in the last 10 days, which seems bizarre. They don't play until Wednesday.

Extending Luke and keeping Dougie and Kovacevic is overkill on defense, in my opinion. I’d rather use some of that cap space to add a quality scoring forward and not just another third liner alongside Hughes-Bratt.
My biggest concern about extending Kovacevic before moving Dougie is you might back yourself into a corner in terms of value. Maybe if the Devils open up the market to include Hamilton, Nemec, and Casey, they can play suitors for Hamilton against suitors for Nemec/Casey.
Fitzgerald has been a pretty shrewd trader for the most part, so I’d be willing to give him a benefit of the doubt.
Plus let’s also be real here, this year is likely Dougie’s last as the top go-to offensive weapon, even if Luke won’t be the shooting threat Dougie is on PP1. If we wait another year to move him, odds are his role decreases and his value takes a hit too.
Well he has to call out somebody else now that Holtz is gone.
