Basically, to add on to my point re: trading Hamilton, if you want Hamilton here next year, you should be in favor of a Hughes bridge deal. There isn't any sense in extending Luke at a huge number on a big contract and then playing him on PP2 and paying another guy top-line money to play PP1 and 2nd pairing ES minutes (and no PK).

Trading Hamilton won't necessarily be easy and I think the Devils will have to eat some money to do it. Carolina is one place I could see maybe being interested. I'd say Boston but they won't be.
Well, a huge Hughes deal is more for the later years and not just for next year

Elite PP weapons like hamilton are underrated.

Here is every dman in terms of how much offense their team generates on the PP over the last 2 years.

Dougie is insane

But if you are looking for teams that should be interested in Dougie, look to the panthers.

They have a lack of RD (especially if Ekblad leaves), no PP QB (currently the number 1 dman in PP toi is Uvis Balinskis), and they are in win now mode.

@Zajacs Bowl Cut and @TrufleShufle I didn't see the posts that prompted this a while back until after the fact but knock the public sniping off and take it to PM's or you're both getting put in timeout

And there is a difference between 'calling out a bad opinion' and being an *** toward other posters. This is Devils team discussion, not poster discussion.

I don’t understand how we live in a world where trading Hamilton is hard but the rangers just offloaded Trouba and paid nothing for it.

You've elided shooting percentage here - Dougie ran hotter than the sun last season before getting hurt, and now he's also doing the same thing while playing with a great PP1. He has the highest on-ice shooting percentage of any defenseman on the power play. I think he's a big part of that PP1. He also has by far the highest xG/60 on the PP among defensemen, it's true.

The trouble is that teams averaged fewer than 3 power plays a game in last year's playoffs and are below that so far this season. There just aren't many opportunities with the power play. In a 2008 PP environment, Hamilton would be incredibly valuable - we're not there anymore.

I don’t understand how we live in a world where trading Hamilton is hard but the rangers just offloaded Trouba and paid nothing for it.

Because players like Trouba - who hold absolutely no regard for their opponent's (and arguably their own) health - are becoming a rarity. And most teams already have a PP1 guy they're paying for.

I have to be honest... and I'm not trying to be combative or anything... but I for the life of me cannot understand the amount of people that want Hamilton traded.

He's on pace for 57 points which would be the second best point total of his career. Other than last year, he's been healthy. He had a slow start coming off a long injury and recovery... but his defense has improved and he's putting up a lot of points.

Casey and Nemec are not replacing that PP QB 1 and point output any time soon.

He has a complete NMC this year then an NMC and 10 team no trade the last 3 years of his deal.

The cap is going to go up 3-5 mil ever year.

PALAT is the guy that needs to go. He has two more years. Complete NMC this year... NMC and 10 team no trade his two remaining years. Get rid of him and Dougie's cap hit matters even less.
It's not clamoring. Just trying to read the tea leaves. There are some red flags and similar players like Dougie, once they lose a step, lose their playability very fast.

I've always liked Dougie. But they should be preparing for all possibilities.

Yeah, the Palat contract is bad. We know this. It was bad from Day 1. Anyone who argued in favor of that signing was wrong (and I caught a looooot of flak for criticizing the deal). But other teams aren't going to want him.

What was the quote I read here a few days ago? "It's better to trade a player a year early than a year late"?

Just adding fuel to the fire :)

I don't want to trade him, at least not right now, but we'll have to make a cap move at some point and considering age/contracts/value he's the one that makes the most sense. You're going to have to pay an asset or two in order to move Palat, Dougie still has some value.
By the time Nemec and Casey are ready to be full time productive NHL players, Palat will be on his last year or gone and Hamilton will be on his last year. The cap is not going to be a problem especially with it going up 5% per year.

I mean I am glad Bastian is back and is okay, but man I really would want to see Legare for a bit longer. I generally don't like getting slower, and Bastian is slooooooow.

Bastian’s merits or demerits aside, I thought Legare played well enough to get an extended cup of coffee. But I guess that’s how it goes.
