Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - offseason edition

Palmieri did not gel at all with Hughes in their time together in 2020. He wouldn't play on PP1 with everyone healthy. Don't really have much interest there.
I thought Hughes and Palmieri together would be an unstoppable force and couldn't have been more excited to watch it. Was such a disappointment....

I mean Hughes has gotten a lot better, but I don't think Palms has. Maybe it would work, but I'm not going to get my hopes up at all if it happens, but also wouldn't be pessimistic, as long as it wasn't "our big splash."

His pubes are probably graying at this point

I’ve told you that this is a family site and juvenile jokes about bodily hair and functions are immature and reductive and I would never stoop that low to amuse myself and you should not either. Somebody needs to think of thr children.

What about one ripe Corey Perry?
unironically a better idea

If all else is lined up a team can add a luxury piece like Perry. But it requires being able to easily shelter him. There has to be lineup flexibility to mar it work.
I was mostly kidding, but he's you're right he's pretty effective in his role. 19 goals at 40 years old playing 11 mins/game is nothing to scoff at. 4th line RW with some net front PP2 time and he can help a team out. If he doesn't retire after winning the cup this year lol

Well the team had this "speed" mentality in recent years that went against signing aging vets. Would be kinda funny to watch the equivalent of 2009's Shanahan-Holik-Rupp line now

We're going to have to gamble on a vet at some point. Palat burned us but I suppose it kind of made sense at the time. Palmieri makes sense if it's a 2-3 year deal.

It does not make sense as a 3 year deal. Kyle Palmieri turned 34 in February, he will be 37 at the end of a 3 year deal. He's held up remarkably well, all things considered, but it does not take a lot to send a player of that age and ability off a cliff, never to return.

I keep saying stuff like this, but the Devils got Palmieri as an undervalued player for a 2nd and 3rd round pick and he turned out to be a top line-ish winger for the next decade. They should be looking for the next Palmieri.

In a lot of ways Shero's first move was his best move this side of 'one for one'...we don't appreciate just how unlikely an outcome that was. He more or less tried that move later with Nikita Gusev and that didn't quite work out as well.
