Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - offseason edition

Yes, but for a large portion of that time the IIHF didn’t use a playoff format. They did win silver in 1950, but that was their last top 2 finish (not counting the 1960 and 1980 Olympics, which were technically also world championships). And up until the 70’s (when Canada boycotted) pros were banned.

In modern times though the US has never prioritized this tournament. They usually bring the youngest roster. Even this roster has I think only has 2 players from the 4 nations (Swayman and Werenski, and Swayman was the 3rd goalie). Of course USA Hockey has progressed where a full B team can compete.

It's weird but they didn't win silver though in 1950 cause of the format...

"While the U.S. team technically placed second, Switzerland as the European Champion received the Silver Medal. The U.S. team received the Bronze medal for their second-place finish."

Ain't no way. Who does the US send to this tournament, peewee players?

Historically not far off. It’s usually a bunch of 4th liners from non-playoff teams and a few high end college prospects. USA Hockey has usually used it as a development tournament as most of the top players (if they can go) pass.

They have been sending pretty good teams for awhile now, they usually play well in the group stage and just bomb out in the knockout round.

Switzerland up 3-0 in the 1st, going to be a really tough game tomorrow.

I looked at flights for Stockholm, way too expensive, under $400 I would have gotten on a plane today lol

Casey is my last player on the list of our young D core(after Luke, Nemec and Sylayev). I like him a lot but I would start the trading negotiations from him. I understand the level of his potential but we already have Luke and its look like we will be in bidding wars for Quinn. May be we should use Casey years on ELC, raise his value and than trading him. Or just see how it will go. Sometimes you need less to find right players. With Quinn on the track there are not a lot of cap space now, not a lot of cap space in the future for one more big player. I would like to find guys who stuck on a good team, needs to change of scenario. We dont need to trade Casey for a guy like Turcotte if they really want something like Kovacevic/Dillion/Hamilton from us.

I would trade Silayev for a guy like Larkin. But I dont think Yzerman will trade Larkin at all.
Zero chance on Larkin trade. Detroit is apparently marner’s new team

Nico still missing for Switzerland due to injury but with Siegenthaler and Meier in the lineup Switzerland is leading Denmark and looks to be headed to a finals showdown with the USA in the gold medal game.

In watching these games, I realize teams rarely pursue RFA's but would love to see New Jersey find a way to make an offer to Ottawa 's Shane Pinto.

man even the announcers sound like old timey ones that you would hear calling baseball games from the 30s
thats young Jim Jackson whos still the current play-by-play guy for the flyers ...

also, on the few goals scored here someone gets his first NHL goal against us, sounds to familiar lol

there is really no shot you would get Quinn without including at LEAST one of Silayev/Nemec

now, you can say you don't want to do that, and that is fine I guess, but yeah.
A poster on the Canucks site proposed Silayev, Nemec, 2026 1st RD pick, a NJ cap hit player (Hamilton or Palat) to Vancouver

To Devils Hughes, Blueger or Sherwood, Cap hit $$$ for the Cap hit player they accepted in the trade. Not the greatest deal I've seen but it brings in what would without question the best player on the Devils roster and Dougie's $9Mil.

W/C Sherwood (30) put up 19/21/40 in 78GP for Vancouver this season.

C Blueger (30 yrs old/6'0"/185) has been a bottom 6 Canuck for the past 2 seasons avg 27 Pts/season (8/18/26 82GP).
Both are signed for next season. Blueger $1.8Mil - Sherwood $1.5 Mil

I'd take back Sherwood, but lobby for both of them. Dougie's $9 mil off the books would allow NJ to sign A top 6 wing. Not resigning Tatar $1.8Mil, Lazar ($1Mil, Bastian ($1.350Mil), Dowling ($775K) allots $4.950Mil (call it $5Mil) for a #3 C. That would give NJ 12 signed forwards with Palat, Haula, and MacDermid still on the roster and available to try to make hay with.

Sprong, Glass, and Foote are RFAs. Glass made $2.5Mil. Sprong made $975K and Foote $825K or a total of $1.8Mil. That provides Glass with a raise and likely still leaves some left over. All you have to do for Sprong and Foote is not offer them a contract.

Now, NJ decides whom of Palat, Haula, and MacDermid can be eliminated to create a 14 man roster.

Fitz could opt to include his Vancouver add in the Trade for Hughes in another deal and keep Sprong or whomever. He's in charge and has the pieces to move around the board.

Pure speculation on my part, butr it would appear that deal could actually work out depending upon Dougie's decision of whether or not Vancouver is acceptable. If not, Haula and Palat add up to basically the same amount. Both, in spite of all their warts, are a better duo than Blueger and Sherwood.

I wouldn't want to be be in Fitz's shoes as the Hughes thing will hang over him for a max of 2 seasons if he just sits still.
