Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - offseason edition

It's funny seeing all the hate other Leafs get up there, while Tavares hides in the shadows with a Leaf playoff performance of: 51GP, 17G, 14A, 31Pts (with PP time), -15!

And that's while generally getting the easier offensive matchup since most teams primarily focused on shutting down Matthews' line. Tavares is overrated and still living off his draft hype at nearly 35. He can keep staying irrelevant up in Toronto. Good player that many folks somehow still think is some great 1C solely on draft position/hype. No way Devs could afford him even if he left Toronto since his reputation precedes his actual production in crunch time.
Plus Tavares is old, slow on his feet and visibly declining. The Tavares of 5 years ago as a middle 6 center sure. But the Tavares of today is not what we need.

What he can still do is camp out around the goal, look for some contact and spin this way or that to shoot - it’s a lacrosse move translated to hockey. The rest of his game has gone with the seasons. We already have good power play options.

The Marner FA will be fascinating, is there a real fit of a good team who has the cap space and only needs a good winger? Maybe Colorado to attempt to replace Rantanen (too late) lmao. I could see someone like Philly making a statement signing trying to bring Marner in even though he isn't a typical 'Flyers player'

I think Vegas will do something to make cap space and get him.

Knies probably stays in Toronto now. If both Marner and Tavares leave via FA. They have plenty to sign or match any offer sheet for Knies. They will build around a core of Matthews, Nylander, Knies.

Likely one less offer sheet candidate.

Avs' leadership literally said they moved Rantanen because you can't allocate that amount of $$$ to a few players and win. Right or wrong, that is their philosophy. They will not be going after Marner. In the very, very odd event that they heel turn though, Landeskog would also need to be moved since his contract counts now.

After making bank and wallowing in Toronto, Id give Tavares a 3-year deal to be 3C.

I tried convincing this board that Chandler Stephenson was our guy but they rather pay $7-8M for John Tavares or Sam Bennett.

It’s their fault we suck, but I mostly blame Tom Fitzgerald. You reap what you sow.

i'll admit i haven't seen much of him playing but jt still put up 75pts and almost 40 goals this year. to say hes declining is a reach. will he put up similar numbers going forward? probably not but i think 60pts for the next couple years is doable and as a 2/3 line material thats pretty nice

I will give you credit, it does take balls to continually be wrong and just double, triple, quadruple down on it!

I hope Marner dips out of Toronto.

Shit, I would take Marner in a heartbeat if we could make it work.

keefe will have an insider edge on the leafs roster so if they do go after someone i wouldn't be opposed to it i trust his thinking. i think getting out of the pressure cooker up there for ANYONE on that roster will do wonders for them.

then rantanen proceeds to take out his former team.

The Chandler Stephenson contract is like the single worst contract in the NHL

Am I missing something !??

The FA in UFA stands for Free Agent, they can sign wherever they want. Blaming Fitz for not signing someone (Stephenson) is absurd. For all we know Stephenson took a look at Jack and Nico and crossed NJ off his list. A guy like him isn't signing up to play behind two guys. The only way to convince someone in that situation is to blow them out of the water with cash, thus creating a terrible contract that the same people will blame Fitz for.

Fitz isn't perfect but he has a way batter track record than the collective peanut gallery on here would.

The single worst contract is already on this team. Anyway, how are you even determining it’s the single worst contract? I’ve seen this a lot but don’t get why people feel that way. If you do plan to describe this, always remember 3C Justin Dowling.

do you understand how bad you have to be to be under 40% xG% for an ENTIRE season?

for reference, MacDermid was at 35% this year.

I would genuinely rather have Dowling at his number as the 3C than Stephenson lol.

Top 10 Worst Contracts in the NHL - #2
Fresh off the hopper, the brand new Chandler Stephenson deal earns an immediate top-three debut on the worst contracts list. Not a great sign!

Some folks in the Pacific Northwest might bemoan that judging Stephenson’s new deal before he’s even played a game with Seattle is unfair. That argument usually holds more merit when a player goes to a new situation where he has an opportunity to thrive under differing circumstances. I don’t think that’s the case with Stephenson. He’s going from playing with Mark Stone every second Stone is healthy to playing with a lot of players who aren’t half as good as Stone.

While Stephenson’s value was worth $6 million just one year ago, the likelihood of bouncing back to that level without Stone by his side is probably low. To do so for the next seven years — all of which occur in his 30s — feels even lower.

As of right now, Stephenson is an average middle-six center — one who gives a lot of his offense back the other way. There are a lot of red flags in his game that came to the surface last season, all pointing to an onerous contract waiting to be handed out.

The Kraken did just that and I doubt we’ll have to wait very long to see that. Stephenson has a lot to prove to show this isn’t a Day 1 disaster. Showing he’s more than Stone’s linemate and someone who can drive play on his own accord would be a strong start.

To make things worse, Stephenson had a f***ing HORRIFIC year and was worse then anyone could have imagined this season

Anyways, yes Fitz needs to strengthen the center position this year, and should have done so last year.

No, the answer was never and still is not Chandler Stephenson.

I don't hate the idea of Tavares. The only issue I have with him is how slow he is. That's becoming an issue on our roster.
