Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - offseason edition

I don't see Mercer ever being a 30-30 guy.

More like 20-25 goal range, 25-30 assist range.

I think that's just about the player he is / going to be at this point

I just can't wait until we see what we gave up for Quinn Hughes in a couple months from now.

I'm hoping its:
One of Hamilton/Palat (Or both! 🤞)
One of Nemec/Casey
Dawson Mercer
2026 1st round pick

If we just shuffle the chairs on the bottom 6 deck we'll be in the same exact position next season.

We need another primary goal scoring winger to play in the top 6. Two more would even be better. Palat and Noesen shouldn't see anything but fill in duty in the top 6.

I think it’s more or less the other way around with Merc Dog. He had the great 2nd year in 23 with 27 goals. Every other season he has been around 20. Thats all he is. Thats what he gets paid to be. I’ll take 20 goals all day. Just let him be on the RW of the 3rd line. THAT BEING SAID....in the right move, yes you have to part ways with him.
You’re likely right, but he’s just so young I can’t write him off after he showed so much at 20 years old. Might be the optimist about the devils in me, but I don’t believe he’s had his career best season already. Not to say the devils should wait around forever for him to have that season.

I still have faith Mercer can be a 30-30 guy for the devils and be a legit top 6 winger. He absolutely needs to show improvement next season though, 3 years of spinning his wheels would be disastrous and it would be his last season as a devil I imagine. Absolutely needs to work his ass off to get stronger on the puck this summer.
I would staple him to Jack Hughes line. Don't know why they have been kept apart for past two seasons.

So no FitzBlitz at the year end presser ...
thx for repeating like 5 times that Gritzs is gonna get an opportunity here next year. i mean, who would have thought lol

what we learned today is Luke has a Bratt shoulder, Jack has a jacked shoulder and Nemo has a Temo shoulder, thats interesting.
No word on Luke probably means Fitz already sandbagging him

hello offseason, we come

The bottom six has many UFA'S.
Lazar
Tatar
Dowling
Sprong
Bastian

RFA:
Glass

And MacDermid why?

& contract nooses
Palat
Haula
If they can't buy them out or trade them, they should stay on "over paid" 4th line.

Who do you keep?

I liked Sprong, not a strong argument to keep him, but he can come cheap on a league minimum two-way contract. Brings speed and scoring. Not much defense.

Glass, perhaps. As long as they bring back cheap. Don't give him QO, get that contract down. Plus, he's a better fit as a 4C. He brings speed and scoring prowess. Wins faceoffs. I'd keep him depending on that contract.

Mercer on third line wing, Cotter on 4th (3rd if he improves consistency)

The rest? Probably best for Fitz to replace them.

I expected Mercer to bounce back this past season and hit around 30 goals and 60 points. It makes little sense to me that he has lost talent at his age so there is a better player in there to be unlocked.
That was never going to happen playing on the 3rd line full time in a defensive role....that's how he's been used

About 20/20 is about it....and considering that we were and underperforming team in terms of goals his numbers make perfect sense for a 3rd liner in his role.

Brother WHY do you keep saying this? Dawson Mercer averaged more 5 on 5 ice time than Bratt this year, 4th most on the team. He does not play a 3rd line role.

Mercer being a reliable 40+ pt guy and a .5ppg postseason guy is not bad to have. Especially at his age and his cost. He is also the kind of player that could* get better with age.

I don’t think he is great, but also not bad. I think he gets too much flak sometimes.

Obviously tradable for the right deal.

I'm not sure what nonsense a Chance Assist is but look at Paloot! That's why he gets payed the big bucks, what a playoff stud.
An assist on a scoring chance? Doesn't seem that complicated.

Although it's a sample size of like 6+ games if you count the OTs, so I'm not sure how much you can really read into anything.

If Mercer stays as a 3rd line winger you're pretty much insuring Noesen is in your top 6 as the #2 RW behind Bratt..

I don't particularly think that's a good idea... it's not the end of the world but it pretty much locks in the top 5 of

Meier Nico Noesen
XXX Jack Bratt

I don't think Noesen belongs there and then you still need a LW for Jack..

Which is exactly the same as this past season and none of it really worked out all that well.

That's my point, it's a gobbly gook meaningless chart.

Palat was great in the playoffs, I legit lean on the side of bringing him back if we could.

But then we would need to move Dougie for cap reasons

It's not a gobbly gook meaningless chart, it's literally the record of all the games the Devils played in the playoffs, someone watching all the games and counting scoring chances. It's as simple as it possibly can be.

Palat is definitely here one more season. Dont think we can trade that, nor buy him out now. Need another year for those two options to be more palatable (pun absolutely intended)
