Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - draft and FA edition

I have never met someone who uses the word “snowflake” to form a cogent thought. I appreciate the confirmation bias.

I’m glad that nobody else has Gritsyuk fatigue. A chance to train and work out for the organization that drafted you before the coronavirus lockdown seems like something a player eager to earn a spot on the roster would be taking advantage of. But I guess that makes me a spurned lover. Or a snowflake? Lmk.

This is not what development camp is. It is a chance for younger players to show their ability and learn about how to become a professional hockey player. The team usually invites some undrafted players to potentially earn an AHL (or NHL) contract, or at least a camp invite where they can then earn that.

The Devils did not invite Alex Holtz, Luke Hughes, or Simon Nemec to development camp in 2023, even though none of them had made the NHL yet. There was no reason for them to come, so they didn't. I'm not sure that someone like Ethan Edwards will be attending this year's, as he's attended at least 3 others (I think they weren't held in 2021, so he's only been eligible to attend 3).

“Insulting” is wild.

Someone else saying “against literal children” is also wild. Gritsyuk is (barely) 24. There will be plenty of 22 year olds at camp.

You guys are doing a lot of work over a snide comment. Gritsyuk not attending development camp is not even remotely surprising given everything we’ve know and discussed about this prospect since before my 2nd grader was born.
I dunno, you’re doing a lot more work getting angry over anyone disagreeing

Yea, it does since none of that matters - it’s the definition of looking for something to be upset about as others have pointed out.

Look at the post! it reads like you feel you deserve to get to see Gritsyuk at this camp because feel like the wait was long - it has nothing to do with him as a player.

'Only' $1.2 - the Devils should not be spending this kind of money on this position.

Yes, the Devils found Kovacevic, something which is a once-in-a-decade kind of trade, and they have even less room to add a player like that because Casey and Nemec are a year older - it's entirely possible that even if they trade Hamilton that this guy isn't dressing most nights, that he is beaten out by Casey.

That's why someone like Brodie makes a ton of sense - can play both sides, is at the point in his career where he has to choose between a steady gig on a bad team and press box duty with a good one, and is already making a sizable salary from his buyout from Chicago.

Alec Martinez is another option.

Martinez retired.

In 2007 I remember dead-silence in the off-season meant that Lou was cooking.

In 2024 the dead-silence (no rumors of trades, or even rumors of interest in players) probably means Fitz is also cooking (an overdone steak on an over expensive grill.)

slam dunk of a deal for a player who would’ve moved the needle for the devils next year. Hell yeah fitz, way to avoid that one. can’t have those highly skilled fast players, go find me a 6’-8” dude who can’t skate but knows how to fight. lets go!!!!!

Just pacing around with fists balled up, fuming that the Devils didn’t get the ineffective perimeter player who was on the cover of NHL 23
yeah skilled players suck. we should sign 3 more stay at home defenseman and see if Tatar is up for round 3!!!!

a 2nd rounder is also just obscenely expensive. why trade that for Zegras when we can trade it for Dumolin in a year where we were +2000 to win a playoff series.

That tells you just about everything you need to know about the rest of the league’s opinion on Zegras.

I can't think of a worse fit for the Devils' forward group than Trevor Zegras. Won't be on PP1, no open slot at center, he's basically Jack Hughes but worse in every respect.
no open slot at center!? holy shit i must have missed one heck of a trade/signing.

If he accepted a role as the 3C and greatly buttoned up his defensive game then it would make sense. And it definitely makes sense for Philly. They can afford to take the chance and see if he figures it out. But there are a lot of ifs there that I don't think we can afford.

acting like zegras isn't an upgrade over Palat, Glass, or Mercer -- who all played significant minutes (and powerplay minutes!) for the Devils last year is... something.

Or found a defensive game at all. And started making better puck decisions.

I mean... he was 36% at the FWs... on pace for less than 100 on a full season pace.

Look - its a decent gamble by Philly. But Zegras has been trending down in terms of production. And I don't know what his injuries were, but he's played 88 games out of a possible 164 over the past 2 seasons.
