Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - draft and FA edition

I like Glass, I hope we sign him but “legit one of the best defensive centers in the league “? This cannot be a basis for a serious discussion.
Seems like a lot of these 4th liners have strong defensive numbers in these models then some of these people just cite those models outputs as being definitive evidence for actual performance.

Bingo. There are dozens of players with similar super-duper highly advanced chart scores / profiles that are out of the NHL already in their 20s. But those folks won't tell ya that because ignorance is bliss.

Doesn't mean he won't be back, obviously

GASP, but wait! I was assured he was a capable 3C and was worth qualifying for the Devs! Of course in reality, the most C needy team in the league isn't even gonna qualify him. I rest my case.

You're just completely blinkered. The Devils have not qualified a lot of 'bottom 6' players over the years, including both McLeod and Bastian twice. I just told you today they weren't going to qualify him.

This means nothing at all about whether or not Glass will be in a Devils' uniform in October.

There’s a classic meme, that I won’t post here because it uses some, shall we say, archaic and uncouth terminology.

But “I was only pretending to be an idiot” isn’t going to end up being quite the defense you think it is.

What are you taking about? I’ve been getting away with that for years.

Huingo.
Ice time 5 on 5 + faceoffs turn into SF% and xGF%
Ducks Lundestrom sf 43% gf40%
Bruins Beecher 44/45 Kastelic 45/40
Buf Krebs 48/46
Car Drury and Jost have 51+ and 54+ but both players were last/near last in center's team charts, Glass was on top.
CBJ Kuraly 48/48
Clg Rooney 48/44
Chi Kaurashev 44/41
Col Drury 54/50 Kelly 51/50 both are 4th/5th in categories
Dal Steel 49/50 Blackwell 50/51
Det Rasmussen 46/48
Edm Janmark 48/46 Ryan 50/47
Flo Boqvist 49/50
I don't need to post it more. All of them don't have not as good numbers as Glass aside Canes, all of them are 3rd or 4th or lower centers on charts with their numbers. Not near the best on team charts as Glass.

Glass was good as Pitts center as Devils center. And even saved his on ice clean impact even after the injury.
And there is s real chance he will sign for less.

Like we see - no.

My favorite stat is Games Played. Glass has never played a full season. He’s a $1.5M player and 4C. I don’t mind it , but would prefer a guy who’s physical, can win faceoffs, and cover 3C occasionally. He’s marginally better than Tomas Nosek.

Again, to reiterate what has already been noted, this doesn’t mean he won’t be a Devil next year. It means they won’t sign him for his qualifying offer, which almost everyone here noted was higher than his value as a player. We’ve done this before and brought players back for less, McLeod and Bastian in particular.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise.

The odd thing is it being announced by Friedman now, which implies to me that the agent isn't happy with New Jersey's offers and Glass might walk, or even that there are no offers at all and the Devils weren't happy with Glass's play and have no interest in him. There's going to be 20 other unqualified RFAs who dressed regularly, I'm not sure why Glass merits a mention here.

It’s an odd time for it to be dropped, I agree, but I suppose it could be a way for the agent to gauge the interest level across the league if it’s out there early enough.

We’ll see how it plays out, but I’m certainly not surprised at all about passing on the qualifying offer salary.
