I’ve been waiting for a trade for a player who is looking for more ice time rather than the big names set to make big money. An analytic GM should be primed to find these players. Like the Palmeri trade.
Its funny you mention this. I went out for a run earlier today and while I was running I had a thought about finding guys who look great in limited minutes that you pay a small price to put into a bigger role and hope it pays off (like Palmieri).
And what I kind of came up with is that I'm not sure this actually exists any more. At least not at that price point. There's more cap room in play now it feels like....not a lot of teams up against it. Teams are locking up their guys and free agency sucks now because of it. That inflates the price point in trades too. And teams mostly lock up their ascending players.
I think if that Palmieri trade were to happen again, Anaheim probably gets at least a middle-late first and possibly a sweetener. No way I think you can grab that profile for a second and third round pick now (and that's assuming that a team would have problems locking up the player up in a similar situation)
These kind of moves now seem more for guys who have not developed / stagnated and they still go for decent price points. Like, if Seattle were to trade the Devils Shane Wright, I'd fully expect #12 to be going to Seattle in that trade.
